Information and communication technologies (ICT) are increasingly permeating our daily life and we ever more commit our data to the cloud. Events like the COVID-19 pandemic put an exceptional burden upon ICT. This involves increasing implementation and use of data centers, which increased energy use and environmental impact. The scope of this work is to summarize the present situation on data centers as to environmental impact and opportunities for improvement. First, we introduce the topic, presenting estimated energy use and emissions. Then, we review proposed strategies for energy efficiency and conservation in data centers. Energy uses pertain to power distribution, ICT, and non-ICT equipment (e.g., cooling). Existing and prospected strategies and initiatives in these sectors are identified. Among key elements are innovative cooling techniques, natural resources, automation, low-power electronics, and equipment with extended thermal limits. Research perspectives are identified and estimates of improvement opportunities are mentioned. Finally, we present an overview on existing metrics, regulatory framework, and bodies concerned.

AbstractSeveral decades of research have addressed the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in industrial-organizational (I-O) psychology. However, segmented research streams with myriad terminologies run the risk of construct proliferation and lack an integrated theoretical justification of the contributions of ICT concepts. Therefore, by identifying important trends and reflecting on key constructs, findings, and theories, our review seeks to determine whether a compelling case can be made for the uniqueness of ICT-related concepts in studying employee and performance in I-O psychology. Two major themes emerge from our review of the ICT literature: (a) a technology behavior perspective and (b) a technology experience perspective. The technology behavior perspective with three subcategories (the “where” of work design, the “when” of work extension, and the “what” of work inattention) explores how individual technology use can be informative for predicting employee well-being and performance. The technology experience perspective theme with two subcategories (the “how” of ICT appraisals and “why” of motives) emphasizes unique psychological (as opposed to behavioral) experiences arising from the technological work context. Based on this review, we outline key challenges of current ICT research perspectives and opportunities for further enhancing our understanding of technological implications for individual workers and organizations.

Τhis study is a critical review of published scientific literature on the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), Virtual Reality, multimedia, music and their applications in children with special learning difficulties.  Technology and music are two factors that are recognized as tools which ensure quality of life, success and access to knowledge and learning resources. In the following papers of the last decade (2006-2015) are proposed models of music therapy for students with special learning difficulties in a psycho educational setting. There are also defined future research perspectives concerning the applications of technology in this particular research field.

Increasing demand for experts capable of high-quality assessment of the impact of a particular planned activity on the environment involves a more effective use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the educational process of training ecology students. The authors present a methodology for students to study the educational material of the “Environmental Impact Assessment” course by using ICT. The methodology and algorithm for using the Padlet interactive whiteboard, Mindomo mind maps, Easel infographics, Google Drive and Google Docs in lectures and practical lessons are described. Particular attention is paid to the preparation of a group project using ICT. Tested in the Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatiuk National Pedagogical University, the methodology allows to implement a number of tasks such as: promotion of intensification and effectiveness of teaching; acquisition of practical skills to quickly find the necessary information on various online resources for ecology students; simulation of the real procedure of environmental impact assessment in the classroom; development of the ability to professionally communicate with experts in other fields of knowledge or activity, etc. Examination of the results of using ICT to study the “Environmental Impact Assessment” course has shown a significant increase in informational literacy among ecology students and their individual professional growth.

In this paper, we address the management of Data Centers (DCs) by considering their optimal integration with the electrical, thermal, and IT (Information Technology) networks helping them to meet sustainability objectives and gain primary energy savings. Innovative scenarios are defined for exploiting the DCs electrical, thermal, and workload flexibility as a commodity and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are proposed and used as enablers for the scenarios’ implementation. The technology and scenarios were evaluated in the context of two operational DCs: a micro DC in Poznan which has on-site renewable sources and a DC in Point Saint Martin. The test cases’ results validate the possibility of using renewable energy sources (RES) for exploiting DCs’ energy flexibility and the potential of combining IT load migration with the availability of RES to increase the amount of energy flexibility by finding a trade-off between the flexibility level, IT load Quality of Service (QoS), and the RES production level. Moreover, the experiments conducted show that the DCs can successfully adapt their thermal energy profile for heat re-use as well as the combined electrical and thermal energy profiles to match specific flexibility requests.

Numerous evaluation metrics and standards are being proposed across industry and government to measure and monitor the energy efficiency of data centers. However, the energy use of data centers is just one aspect of the environmental impact. In this paper, we explore the overall environmental footprint of data centers beyond just energy efficiency. Building upon established procedures from the environmental sciences, we create an end-to-end life-cycle model of the environmental footprint of data centers across a diverse range of impacts. We test this model in the case study of a hypothetical 2.2-MW data center. Our analysis suggests the need for evaluation metrics that go beyond just operational energy use in order to achieve sustainable data centers.

Over the last decade, data journalism has evolved alongside information and communication technologies, spreading more and more into professional journalism. The purpose of this article is to understand if and how traditional press has reacted to the new technological tools available for reporting and the increasing availability of open data, whether public or private. To investigate these issues, articles published on the websites of three major Brazilian newspapers – Folha de S. Paulo, O Globo and O Estado de São Paulo – were analyzed for their coverage of International Women's Day in 2017. The results indicate that there is still a lack of data in most of the material, that the use of digital visualization techniques is still in its early stages and that there is no raw data supply in news production. On the other hand, the use of data and statistics without reference or source checking is quite noticeable and frequently occurs in the corpus.Na última década, o jornalismo de dados evoluiu ao lado das tecnologias de informação e comunicação, espraiando-se cada vez mais pelo ambiente do jornalismo profissional. A proposta deste artigo é compreender se e como o jornalismo impresso tradicional tem reagido às novas ferramentas tecnológicas disponíveis para a prática da reportagem e à crescente disponibilidade de dados abertos, sejam eles de origem pública ou privada. Para investigar estas questões, foram utilizadas como material de análise reportagens publicadas nos sites de três grandes jornais brasileiros – Folha de S. Paulo, O Globo e O Estado de São Paulo – durante a cobertura do Dia Internacional da Mulher em 2017. Os resultados indicam que a presença dos dados ainda ocorre na menor parte do material analisado, que o uso das técnicas digitais de visualização é incipiente e a oferta de dados brutos no processo de produção da notícia não existe. Por outro lado, foi possível perceber que o uso de dados e estatísticas sem indicação ou checagem de fontes é bastante frequente no corpus estudado.En la última década, el periodismo de datos creció al lado de las tecnologías de información y comunicación, tomando el campo del periodismo profesional. La propuesta de este documento es comprender si y cómo el periodismo impreso tradicional ha reaccionado a las nuevas herramientas tecnológicas disponibles para la práctica del reportaje y la creciente disponibilidad de datos abiertos, ya sean de origen público o privado. Para esta investigación se analizarán reportajes publicados en los sitios de tres grandes periódicos brasileños – Folha de S. Paulo, O Globo y O Estado de São Paulo – durante la cobertura del Día Internacional de la Mujer en 2017. Los resultados indicaron bajo uso de datos, uso incipiente de visualizaciones digitales y ninguna oferta de datos brutos. El uso de datos y estadísticas sin referencias o chequeo de las fuentes fueron frecuentes.
