Artificial Intelligence (AI) will not just change our lives but bring about revolutionary transformation. AI can augment efficiencies of good and bad things and thus has been considered both an opportunity and risk for the sustainable development of humans. This study designed a survey to collect 1018 samples of educated people with access to the internet in Taiwan regarding their perceptions of AI and its connections to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The respondents showed high confidence in their AI knowledge. They had a very positive attitude toward AI but at the same time thought AI was risky. In general, people in Taiwan could be “rational optimists” regarding AI. We also examined how people think of the linkages between AI and the SDGs and found that SDG 4, SDG 9, and SDG 3 had the highest “synergy” and lowest rates of “trade-off”. Significant differences for some key questions were also identified concerning the demographic variables such as gender, age, education, and college major. According to the data analysis, education played as the base to construct a sustainable AI-aided town with an embedded innovative circular economy and high-quality water and energy services, making the residents live healthier lives. The findings of this study can be referred to when the perceptions of AI and sustainability issues are of interest for an emerging high-tech economy such as Taiwan and other Asian countries.

Artificial intelligence in the fourth industrial revolution is beginning to live up to its promises of delivering real value necessitated by the availability of relevant data, computational ability, and algorithms. Therefore, this study sought to investigate the influence of artificial intelligence on the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals with a direct focus on poverty reduction, goal one, industry, innovation, and infrastructure development goal 9, in emerging economies. Using content analysis, the result pointed to the fact that artificial intelligence has a strong influence on the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals particularly on poverty reduction, improvement of the certainty and reliability of infrastructure like transport making economic growth and development possible in emerging economies. The results revealed that Artificial intelligence is making poverty reduction possible through improving the collection of poverty-related data through poverty maps, revolutionizing agriculture education and the finance sector through financial inclusion. The study also discovered that AI is also assisting a lot in education, and the financial sector allowing the previously excluded individuals to be able to participate in the mainstream economy. Therefore, it is important that governments in emerging economies need to invest more in the use of AI and increase the research related to it so that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to innovation, infrastructure development, poverty reduction are attained.

AbstractArtificial intelligence is producing a revolution with increasing impacts on the people, planet, and prosperity. This perspective illustrates some of the AI applications that can accelerate the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and highlights some of the considerations that could hinder the efforts towards them. In this context, we strongly support the development of an 18thSDG on digital technologies. This emphasizes the importance of establishing standard AI guidelines and regulations for the beneficial applications of AI. Such regulations should focus on concrete applications of AI, rather than generally on AI technology, to facilitate both AI development and enforceability of legal implications.

Innovativeness is a characteristic of digital technologies (DT), and they have been assuming an important role in economic, social, and environmental dimensions. Therefore, DT are relevant contributors for sustainable development goal (SDG) achievements. This study aims to compare the preference for artificial intelligence-driven digital technologies (AI-Driven DT) to achieve SDGs in Brazil and Portugal. An independent sample t-test analysis and Levene test are performed to identify potential artificial intelligence-driven digital technologies (AI-Driven DT) as favorable facilitators for SDG achievements in Brazil and Portugal. Based on the findings, a broader analysis is provided, to (i) indicate potential favorable SDGs, (ii) discuss differences between the countries in AI-Driven DT preferences in each SDG, and (iii) make recommendations for potential technologies that could receive more attention and investments in both regions to make emergent digital technologies succeed, with a particular emphasis on cleaner production. The analysis is organized into three dimensions: economic, social, and environment. At the end, a closing discussion is provided about the key guidelines and prospects that could be adopted to keep a strong and positive shift of AI-Driven DT developments and applications towards fully supporting the attainment of the SDG of United Nations Organization (ONU) Agenda 2030.

Twitter data related to poverty and basic income was collected for 24 days in 2019, and then was cleaned and prepared for natural language processing. A 7 % subset of the data was manually labeled for sentiment analysis in order to inform the artificial intelligence (AI), which was trained and verified on this subset. We present the results for both the 7 % verification sample and the entire database. This analysis of public opinion on poverty is situated within the Sustainable Development Goals and the support for poverty reduction policies.

The article discusses the global problem of obesity as a socio-ethical phenomenon in the context of UNESCO’s program on bioethics, the ethics of science and artificial intelligence. The article also explains the stigma of obesity, or, in other words, the discrediting social identity assigned to an overweight person, and describes the consequences of such stigmatization. The author explores the socio-ethical causes of obesity and points out the link between obesity and some of the challenges addressed by the Sustainable Development goals, including hunger and social inequality.

RESUMOO presente artigo tem como problema de pesquisa o seguinte questionamento: como a Inteligência Artificial (IA) pode contribuir para o cumprimento das metas da Agenda 2030 para o Desenvolvimento sustentável? A primeira seção se incumbe da demonstração das possíveis utilizações da IA para o efetivo atingimento dos Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS). Neste momento, destacam-se os aspectos positivos e os aspectos negativos na utilização da IA. Na segunda seção, realiza-se um estudo sobre os atos normativos de alguns países sobre as possíveis implicações negativas e regulamentais da IA para com a sociedade. Para tanto, utiliza-se os métodos dedutivo e de pesquisa integrada. Ao final, demonstra-se que a IA apresenta-se como importante fator da equação posta pela Agenda 2030, desde que devidamente observada e regulada.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Agenda 2030; Inteligência Artificial; Desenvolvimento Sustentável. ABSTRACTThis article has as a research problem the following question: how can Artificial Intelligence (AI) contribute to meeting the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development? The first section is responsible for demonstrating the possible uses of AI for the effective achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). At this moment, the positive and negative aspects in the use of AI are highlighted. In the second section, a study is carried out on the normative acts of some countries on the possible negative and regulatory implications of AI for society. For this, the deductive and integrated research methods are used. In the end, it is shown that AI presents itself as an important factor in the equation posed by Agenda 2030, as long as it is properly observed and regulated.Keywords: Agenda 2030; Artificial intelligence; Sustainable development.
