This paper describes the multi-functional rotor noise and aerodynamics test platform at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). To investigate the noise characteristics of propellers with aerodynamic flows, the test rig is installed in the 2.5×2 (m) low-speed and low-noise wind tunnel in the Aerodynamic and Acoustic Facility (AAF) at HKUST. The wind tunnel can facilitate flow from 0 to 40 m/s. The test rig is assembled in a turntable on the ceiling of the tunnel wall, which enables the testing range of pitch angle can vary from 0° (axial flow) to 90° (parallel flow), with an accuracy of 0.1°. The noise produced by the rotor is measured by a set of wall-mounted surface microphones. Semi-empirical calibration is conducted to quantify the noise reflection by the tunnel walls. A low-noise struct has been designed and manufactured to locate a set of far-field microphones equipped with nosecone, to improve the quality of acoustic measurement inside the flow. In addition, a synchronized system is developed to conduct the phase-locking Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurement on the rotor, to study the flow pattern to better understand the noise generation mechanism.

Air flow measurements provide significant information required for understanding the characteristics of insect movement. This study proposes a four-channel low-noise readout integrated circuit (IC) in order to measure air flow (air velocity), which can be beneficial to insect biomimetic robot systems that have been studied recently. Instrumentation amplifiers (IAs) with low-noise characteristics in readout ICs are essential because the air flow of an insect’s movement, which is electrically converted using a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) sensor, generally produces a small signal. The fundamental architecture employed in the readout IC is a three op amp IA, and it accomplishes low-noise characteristics by chopping. Moreover, the readout IC has a four-channel input structure and implements an automatic offset calibration loop (AOCL) for input offset correction. The AOCL based on the binary search logic adjusts the output offset by controlling the input voltage bias generated by the R-2R digital-to-analog converter (DAC). The electrically converted air flow signal is amplified using a three op amp IA, which is passed through a low-pass filter (LPF) for ripple rejection that is generated by chopping, and converted to a digital code by a 12-bit successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC). Furthermore, the readout IC contains a low-dropout (LDO) regulator that enables the supply voltage to drive digital circuits, and a serial peripheral interface (SPI) for digital communication. The readout IC is designed with a 0.18 μm CMOS process and the current consumption is 1.886 mA at 3.3 V supply voltage. The IC has an active area of 6.78 mm2 and input-referred noise (IRN) characteristics of 95.4 nV/√Hz at 1 Hz.

This paper summarizes the state of 3D CFD based models of the time average flow field within axial flow multistage turbomachines. Emphasis is placed on models which are compatible with the industrial design environment and those models which offer the potential of providing credible results at both design and off-design operating conditions. The need to develop models which are free of aerodynamic input from semi-empirical design systems is stressed. The accuracy of such models is shown to be dependent upon their ability to account for the unsteady flow environment in multistage turbomachinery. The relevant flow physics associated with some of the unsteady flow processes present in axial flow multistage machinery are presented along with procedures which can be used to account for them in 3D CFD simulations. Sample results are presented for both axial flow compressors and axial flow turbines which help to illustrate the enhanced predictive capabilities afforded by including these procedures in 3D CFD simulations. Finally, suggestions are given for future work on the development of time average flow models.

This paper describes the development of a semi-empirical model for estimating end-wall losses. The model has been developed from improved understanding of complex endwall secondary flows, acquired through review of flow visualization and pressure loss data for axial flow turbomachine cascades. The flow visualization data together with detailed measurements of viscous flow development through cascades have permitted more realistic interpretation of the classical secondary flow theories for axial turbomachine cascades. The re-interpreted secondary flow theories together with integral boundary layer concepts are used to formulate a calculation procedure for predicting losses due to the endwall secondary flows. The proposed model is evaluated against data from published literature and improved agreement between the data and predictions is demonstrated.

This paper demonstrates the potential of a compressible Navier–Stokes CFD method for the analysis of horizontal axis wind turbines. The method was first validated against experimental data of the NREL/NASA-Ames Phase VI (Hand, et al., 2001, “Unsteady Aerodynamics Experiment Phase, VI: Wind Tunnel Test Configurations and Available Data Campaigns,” NREL, Technical Report No. TP-500-29955) wind-tunnel campaign at 7 m/s, 10 m/s, and 20 m/s freestreams for a nonyawed isolated rotor. Comparisons are shown for the surface pressure distributions at several stations along the blades as well as for the integrated thrust and torque values. In addition, a comparison between measurements and CFD results is shown for the local flow angle at several stations ahead of the wind turbine blades. For attached and moderately stalled flow conditions the thrust and torque predictions are fair, though improvements in the stalled flow regime are necessary to avoid overprediction of torque. Subsequently, the wind-tunnel wall effects on the blade aerodynamics, as well as the blade/tower interaction, were investigated. The selected case corresponded to 7 m/s up-wind wind turbine at 0 deg of yaw angle and a rotational speed of 72 rpm. The obtained results suggest that the present method can cope well with the flows encountered around wind turbines providing useful results for their aerodynamic performance and revealing flow details near and off the blades and tower.

In a world where the increasing demand on developing energy-efficient systems is probably the most stringent design constraint, the trend in engineering research in recent years has been to optimize the existing technologies rather than to implement new ones. The present work addresses a robust axial-type fan design technique developed using an optimization technique. A fan is indispensable equipment for primary and local ventilation in mining industries. We always pursue the fan with high working efficiency and low noise. In this paper, an optimization method is developed to improve the pneumatic properties of the fan based on the blade element theory. A new type of fan used in local ventilation is designed with the help of computer. It is shown that the new design enhanced the efficient up to 88%. Numerical analysis is also conducted to validate the optimization design results.
