A multifactor mathematical model of the welding process of products from aluminum-magnesium alloys, consisting of 71 indicators that assess the quality of the weld, the welding process, costs, equipment operation and quality of the welded material. Abstract Grain refinement has a significant influence on the improvement of mechanical properties of magnesium alloys. In this study, a series of Al–Ti–C-xGd (x = 0, 1, 2, 3) master alloys as grain refiners were prepared by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis. The synthesis mechanism of the Al–Ti–C-xGd master alloy was analyzed. The effects of Al–Ti–C-xGd master alloys on the grain refinement and mechanical properties of AZ31 (Mg-3Al-1Zn-0.4Mn) magnesium alloys were investigated. The results show that the microstructure of the Al–Ti–C-xGd alloy contains α-Al, TiAl3, TiC and the core–shell structure TiAl3/Ti2Al20Gd. The refining effect of the prepared Al–Ti–C–Gd master alloy is obviously better than that of Al–Ti–C master alloy. The grain size of AZ31 magnesium alloy was reduced from 323 μm to 72 μm when adding 1 wt.% Al–Ti–C-2Gd master alloy. In the same condition, the ultimate tensile strength and elongation of as-cast alloy were increased from 130 MPa, 7.9% to 207 MPa, 16.6% respectively.

Magnesium alloys usually exhibit excellent superplasticity at high temperature. However, many Mg alloys have poor formation ability near room temperature. Therefore, preparation of Mg alloys with suitable microstructures to show low or intermediate temperature superplasticity is an important goal. In this work, the superplastic behavior at intermediate temperatures of a commercial ZK60 magnesium alloy processed by indirect extrusion was investigated. After extrusion, the alloy showed a refined and homogeneous microstructure with an average grain size of 4 ± 2 μm. Overall texture measurement indicated that the alloy showed a strong prismatic texture with the highest intensity oriented to pole ⟨101¯0⟩. A texture component ⟨1¯21¯1⟩ parallel to the extrusion direction was found; this type of texture is commonly observed in Mg alloys with rare earth additions. Tensile tests were performed at temperatures of 150, 200, and 250 °C at three strain rates of 10−2, 10−3, and 10−4 s−1. A very high ductility was found at 250 °C and 10−4 s−1, resulting in an elongation to failure of 464%. Based on calculations of the activation energy and on interpretation of the deformation mechanism map for magnesium alloys, it was concluded that grain boundary sliding (GBS) is the dominant deformation mechanism.

It is obvious that automotive industry worldwide is predicting significant growth in the use of magnesium alloys for weight reduction to decrease fuel consumption and emission. About a half decade ago, the price of magnesium alloys was more than twice that of aluminum alloys on a weight basis. Currently, magnesium alloys cost about one and a half times that of aluminum alloys on a weight basis, and thus the price of magnesium alloys is the same as or lower than that of aluminum alloys on a per volume basis. However, in considering the performance of magnesium components (not their specific mechanical properties) and recycling aspect of magnesium alloys, it is required to realize niche applications of magnesium alloys, which meet the cost requirement on performance basis and/or offer more than weight reduction. There are many other factors that make magnesium a good choice: component consolidation, improved safety for driver and passengers, and improved noise vibration and harshness (NVH), to name a few. As one of these efforts to adopt magnesium alloys in automotive component, this paper describes the research strategy of cold chamber type 2-cavity die casting of AM50 magnesium alloy for developing the steering column lock housing module with emphasis on cost driving factors and necessities for cost reduction, explaining why AM50 magnesium alloy is chosen with design and die casting process optimization.
