The article deals with VACTERL association, particularly non randomly associated birth defects, typically defined by the presence of at least three of the following congenital malformations: vertebral anomalies, anal atresia, cardiac malformations, tracheo-esophageal fistula, renal anomalies, and limb abnormalities. Museum collection of the Department of Pathological Anatomy of Kharkiv National Medical University, which devoted to prenatal and perinatal pathology, has numerous museum exhibits representing this pathology. The specimens help to discuss pathological anatomy of each of these defects.KeyWords:  fetus, VACTERL, congenital defect.Курчанова Ю.В., Івантеєва Ю.І., Гаргін В.В. The VACTERL association is one of the more common patterns of multiple malformations in children, with an incidence of approximately 1.6 cases per 10 000 live births.1 The pattern of defects consists of vertebral anomalies (found in 70% of patients), anal atresia with or without fistula (80%), cardiac defect (50%) with ventricular septal defect being most common, tracheoesophageal fistula (70%), renal anomalies (53%), and limb anomalies (65% with radial anomalies and 23% with lower extremity defects).2 The definition of the VACTERL association as a distinct entity is based on the finding that its constituent anomalies are associated in a nonrandom manner.1,3,4

Anorectal malformations (ARM) are common congenital malformations. They are mostly associated with other congenital anomalies including but not limited to vertebral anomalies, cardiac malformations, Tracheoesophageal fistula, esophageal atresia, Renal anomalies, limb anomalies and aneuploidy (Trisomy 21). Apple-peel atresia or ‘Christmas-tree deformity’ consists of a high jejunal atresia with discontinuity of the small bowel and a wide gap in the mesentery. Association of Apple peel atresia with ARM has been reported by many authors in past and in any neonate presenting with ARM proximal atresia needs to be ruled out before surgical intervention is undertaken and newborns with ARM and presenting with drooling of saliva, bilious or non-bilious vomiting in presence of non-distended abdomen must give rise to a suspicion of associated atresia. We are reporting this case of high anal atresia with apple peel atresia of terminal ileum who was treated by double barrel ileostom to emphasize the importance of knowing this association.

Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical outcome in the use of neuroprotective agents in the acute period of ischemic stroke. Material and Methods: The study was performed on the basis of the stroke of the Center for Reconstructive and Rehabilitation Medicine (University Clinic) of the Odessa National Medical University. A retrospective analysis of clinical outcomes of 115 patients with acute stroke was conducted. Results: An average NIHSS score at discharge was 4.1±0.1 points when treated with no refinery, then it reached 3.6±0.1 points when using peptidergic drugs, and 3.4±0.1 when using D-fdf. 3.1±0.1 points. When using D-FDF, the MMSE score was 3.5±0.1 points, whereas when using cholinergic agents, this index did not exceed 26.9±1.5 points, and when using peptidergic agents - 26.8±1.4 points. Conclusion: The use of neuroprotective agents positively affects the effectiveness of neuro-rehabilitation in patients with acute stroke. The best results in three months after the hospitalization were obtained for peptidergic agents and D-fructose-1,6-diphosphate.

Since the original foundation of the genus Dichobune by Cuvier, and the critical observations made thereon by Owen, the national collection has continued to receive new accessions, indicating the existence of a certain range of variation in the molars of that genus. The specimen (No. 30673) in the British Museum collection, is figured in Plate II., by Mr. Mackie. It consists of the three molars of the right side of a species of small quadruped closely resembling Dichobune. The length of the fractured ramus containing these teeth, of which the inner aspect is exposed to the observer, measures 27mm.; its greatest vertical depth between the penultimate and last molar being 11mm.The last molar (m 3) measures 7mm. in length, and 4 in breadth. Its form is quadricuspid; the two outward cusps being least eroded; from the ectoposterior cusp is developed a slight basal talon, extending towards the entoposterior cusp, which is the smallest of the four, pyramidal, and acuminate; the entoanterior cusp is larger, and is tipped with a small exposed ring of enamel; the ectoanterior cusp is much worn; there is no trace of the distinct hinder lobe of Xiphodon, which lobe in the Dichobune (sp. ?) from Hordwell, marked 29714 in the British Museum, exhibits a well-marked bicuspid division, having the effect of rendering the ultimate molar in that specimen virtually hexacuspid, to a greater extent than in the Dichobune ovina.

The human sacrum shape and its metamorphoses should be considered due to their effect, primarily mechanical, predisposing for the vertebral column function evolution. The aim of the study is to define the human sacrum shapes and explain for such variability. The object of the study is represented with 68 sacrums obtained from the review collection of anatomical study preparations of the Bogomolets National Medical University Department of Anatomy. Each of the known human sacrum shapes represents the stage of the process of “sinking” of the sacral vertebrae bodies into the sacrum, with simultaneous fixation of external apices of their lateral parts in the sacroiliac joint. Generally, metamorphoses of the sacrum shape make up an accommodation for the new mechanical conditions as well as causal external factors. The sacrum continuously sustains multiple factors’ effects in each moment of the human life, which affects its shape and metamorphoses. The analysis of the human sacrum shape and functions reveals important instances: first, certain parts of the sacrum don’t preserve permanent relations; secondly, alterations in these relations keep to a certain sequence. This issue permits us to consider various sacrum shapes as sequential stages of the same process, occurring in the human body.
