This study, which is among the first in Pakistan to value recreational benefits, estimates the benefits of the Margalla Hills National Park near Islamabad. The study examines how much park visitors are willing to pay to visit the park. Annual benefits from the park are considerable—the total annual consumer surplus or economic benefit obtained from recreation in the park is approximately Rs. 23 million (US $ 0.4 million). Various factors influence the value visitors obtain from the park — these include travel cost, household income, and the quality of the park. Improvements in the quality of the park are estimated to increase recreational benefits by 39%. The study recommends that a park entrance fee of Rs. 20 per person be introduced, which could be utilized for park management. This would generate nearly Rs. 11 million in revenues annually, a sizable amount of money that represents about 4% of the annual budget allocated to the environment sector in Pakistan.

This study assessed the impact of tourism and willingness to pay by foreigners in Chitwan National Park of Chitwan district during the year 2007-2008. Eighty tourists were selected randomly to evaluate the recreational value of Chitwan National Park to protect the biodiversity of buffer zone area in Chitwan National Park. The tourism created the local employment opportunities to local people but it was unplanned and location specific. Since the program has focused in both community development and conservation awareness activities however, the study showed that only public infrastructure development was emphasized instead of sensitizing the members towards the conservation issues of protected areas. The study examined how much Park visitors were willing to pay to visit the Park. Annual benefits from the Park were considerable - the total annual consumer surplus obtained from recreation in the Park was approximately USD 233 million. Various factors influence the visitors like travel cost, household income, and the quality of the Park. To estimate the recreational value provided by the Foy’s Lake annually using the most applicable model for on-site data is the main objective of this study. Adhere to the objective of this study; Individual Travel Cost Method (ITCM) has been applied and Zero Truncated Poisson Regression Model has been found plausible among other models to estimate consumer surplus. Based on the findings of the study, an estimate of the consumer surplus or recreational benefits per trip per visitor can be recommended as BDT 5,875 or US $ 73.44 and counting the consumer surplus per trip per visitor, the annual recreational value (total consumer surplus) provided by the lake is found to be BDT 321 million or US $ 40.2 million.

Inclusion of multi-destination and multi-purpose visitors has an appreciable influence on a standard count data travel cost model derived estimate of willingness to pay but the differences are not statistically significant. We adapt a more general travel cost model (TCM) of Parsons and Wilson (1997) that allows for inclusion of multi-destination visitors as incidental demand to allow estimation of an unbiased measure of single and multi-destination willingness to pay for whale viewing using a single pooled equation. The primary purpose trip values from the standard TCM and simple generalized TCM model are identical at $43 per person per day and neither are significantly different from the $50 day value from a generalized model that distinguishes between joint and incidental trips. The general models avoid underestimation of total recreation site benefits that would result from omitting the consumer surplus of multi-destination visitors.

Mount Pancar Nature Park (TWAGP) was located in Karang Tengah Village, Babakan Madang District, Bogor Regency. As a unity of sustainability, the TWAGP ecosystem must be able to provide benefits with various values. In the context of the valuation approach, of course, there are practical and normative dimensions for selecting ecosystem services. This study aimed to determine the factors that affect the number of visits to TWAGP and calculate the economic valuation of TWAGP based on the travel cost method (TCM). The method used was TCM. This method was calculated based on total consumer surplus, the coefficient of travel expenses, and total visits respondents. The analysis showed that four factors influence visit frequency, to TWAGP including, cost of travel, level of education, length of knowledge and distance travelled. The consumer surplus of individuals per visit was Rp209.000, and the total economic value was Rp8.535.978.000. The recommendation is a response to the willingness of visitors to pay an additional entry fee than what enforced needs to followed by improving the quality of tourist attractions so that visitors are satisfied and increasingly want to return to visit.   Keyword: Consumer surplus, Economic valuation, Mount pancar nature park, Sustainability, Travel cost method

This study aims to estimate the economic value of a recreational park by using the travel cost method (TCM). Case studies have been done for Pahang National Park, Malaysia, and Srengseng urban forest, Jakarta, Indonesia. The data was obtained from a structured interview with visitors. The data was analysed by using Poisson and negative binomial model. Based on the survey result, it is known that the Srengseng urban forest is local public good used by local public residents whereas the Pahang National Park is visited by visitors from all over the world. The frequency determinants of visits to the urban forest are cost, age, occupation, gender, and visitor’s satisfaction; meanwhile, visit the national park is affected by travel cost, age, education, income and number of visits. The TCM method utilized in this research resulted in the Srengseng Urban Forest total economic benefit of RM0.44 million per year and the Pahang National Park total consumer surplus of RM15.3 million.

ABSTRAKTaman Nasional Gunung Ciremai (TNGC) di Jawa Barat merupakan kawasan konservasi dan salah satu wisata alam di Indonesia. Pengelolaan Taman Nasional Gunung Ciremai (TNGC) Jalur Pendakian Apuy dikelola oleh Mitra Pariwisata Gunung Ciremai (MPGC) Argamukti dan didampingi oleh Seksi Pengelola Taman Nasional II (SPTN II) resort Argalingga. Menjadi destinasi pendakian gunung oleh wisatawan menimbulkan permasalahan tersendiri bagi TNGC sebagai sebuah kawasan hutan. Permasalahan yang timbul antara lain adalah sampah yang dibawa oleh pengunjung taman nasional yang tidak terkelola dengan baik. Selain itu, keterbatasan pengetahuan dan keterbatasan dana yang dihadapi oleh pengelola menambah pelik permasalahan persampahan di area wisata ini. Salah satu alasan dilakukannya penelitian ini adalah belum adanya penelitian mengenai Willingness to pay (WTP) untuk pengelolaan persampahan di Taman Nasional Gunung Ciremai. Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk menentukan nilai WTP dan nilai tersebut nantinya dijadikan sebagai informasi awal biaya untuk pengelolaan persampahan di Taman Nasional Gunung Ciremai Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa rataan WTP responden wisatawan berdasarkan CVM adalah sebesar Rp. 13.646,- atau Rp. 200.996.776 /tahun.Kata kunci: Willingness to Pay, Travel Cost Method, Contingent Valuation Method, Taman Nasional Gunung Ciremai. ABSTRACTMount Ciremai National Park (TNGC) in West Java is a conservation area and one of nature tourism in Indonesia. The Apuy Track in Mount Ciremai National Park are managed by Argamukti’sCiremai Mountain Ascent Community (MPGC) and accompanied by Section II of The National Park Management (STPN II) Argalingga resort. Being a mountain climbing destination raises its own problems for TNGC as a forest. The problems that arise include visitors wastes in national parks are not properly managed. Furthermore, limited knowledge and funds which is faced by the management are increasing the waste problems in this tourism area. One of the reason of this study is the research on Willingness to Pay (WTP) for solid waste management still rare in Mount Ciremai National Park. Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) are used to determine the WTP value and it will be used as first information for waste management costs in Mount Ciremai National Park. The results of this research shown that the average WTP of tourist respondents based on CVM is Rp. 13.646,- or Rp. 200.996.776,- /year.Keywords: Willingness to Pay, Travel Cost Method, Contingent Valuation Method, Mount Ciremai National Park.

Ecotourism, as an alternative tourism, involves visiting natural areas in order to learn, to study or to carry out activities environmentally friendly, that is a tourism based on the nature experience which enables the economic and social development of local communities. Ecotourism encourages rural economics and provides benefits to income and employment generation. It is considered as an alternative for enhancing rural lifestyle and for leading positive changes in the distribution of income. One of the area which has ecotourism site in Indonesia is Karangkamulyan site, Ciamis District of West Java. There is a tourist attraction that not only offers natural beauty, history and cool atmosphere, it also serves as a place of education and research on the history in the field of archeology. This attraction should receive special attention from the local government so that the tourists and local people also get the benefits. Ecotourism can be classified as possessing public goods-type characteristics, and as such, welfare benefit estimates must utilize non-market valuation techniques. This study employs the travel cost method and contingent valuation method. Travel cost and contingent valuation methods are applied to the problem of estimating the potential consumer surplus available to tourists from ecotourism in Ciamis. The results are compared with contingent valuation analysis of willingness-to-pay of tourists in their current trip to ecotourism sites of Ciamis. The result of travel cost method indicates that tourists average travel cost is estimated at no more than one hundred thousand rupiahs. The contingent valuation method concludes that the tourists average willingness to pay in their trip to ecotourism sites of Ciamis is are about IDR 6,800 in average.

This study aims to determine the response of Rimbo people and the surrounding community about the establishment of Bukit Duabelas National Park. The study also estimates the value of tourism and culture among domestic tourists to the object using the Travel Cost Method (TCM). The results obtained by consumer surplus (CS) as much as US $ 2.45 per visitor per visit. The result of CS value of each visitor shows the tourism services in the region does not provide high benefits to tourists. Bukit Duabelas National Park can be a domestic and international eco-cultural tourism destination and welfare improvement. It takes education awareness of tourism and  traditional culture of Rimbo people and the surrounding community to achieve it.

Cibodas Botanical Garden (CBG) is believed to have high environmental value for its function as conservation area and beautiful scenery. However, prior to this research, there is lack of economic valuation to determine the total value of CBG, including its environment. The local government, on the other hand, needs such environmental economic valuation to execute better decisions related to the CBG. This study aims at providing the mostly-needed economic valuation through the application of Travel Cost Method. The Travel Cost Method (TCM) is a method to calculate the economic value of products or services that do not own market value. This method utilises total cost of consumers who travel to certain places, preferably tourist destinations. The cost spent by consumers are considered as their willingness to pay (WTP) for the visited destination(s). In this study, TCM is used by preparing questionnaires for Cibodas visitors, analysing the results of the questionnaires, calculating the total economic value (TEV) of Cibodas, determining the consumer surplus, and proposing environmental programs at CBG. At the end, it was calculated that the TEV of Cibodas Botanical Garden is IDR113,072,532,700 with average WTP of the visitors IDR202,484 per visitor and the consumer surplus of IDR32,344 per visitor. Also, this study reveals that solid waste management improvement at CBG can be funded by potential income from the consumer surplus.

We evaluated recreational and socioeconomic values of Masouleh forest park, north of Iran. Travel Cost Method (TCM) or Clawson method was used for evaluation. Therefore, 96 questionnaires were distributed among the visitors. The results indicated that the variables such as travel time to the park, travel costs, age and education were effective variables in using the park. The results show that there is a significant relation between travel time and the number of visitors whereas by increasing travel time the number of visitors decreased. Furthermore, there is a significant relation between the number of visitors as a dependent variable and travel costs whereas when the travel cost increases, the number of visitors decreases. Results indicated that the willingness to pay decreased by increasing the entrance fee. The models estimated an average willingness to pay 12,500 Iranian Rials per visit. The results also indicated that the average round trip travel cost was 85.5 (10,000 Iranian Rials).
