Professor Mushtaqur Rahman, a renowned Muslim geographer, who wasborn on July 1,1933 in Agra (India), died of cardiac arrest at Des Moines,Iowa (USA), on November 5, 1999. He had heart problems for severalyears that had slowed down his academic and social service activities butnever deterred him from performing them.In 1947, he migrated to Pakistan, a country he loved dearly and lived toserve throughout his life. Still, his contributions went beyond it in a numberof ways. Having done his B.A. (1953) and M.A. (1955) from theUniversity of Karachi, he taught at Islamiah College, Karachi, and SindhUniversity, Hyderabad for a few years. He earned his Ph.D. degree inCultural Geography, from Louisiana State University in 1960, and didpostdoctoral research at the University of Geisen, Germany in 1966-67. Heserved in the Department of Geography, University of Karachi, Pakistanfrom 1963 to 1969. He was appointed Professor of Geography in theDepartment of Anthropology, Iowa State University (ISU), Ames, Iowa.He served ISU till his retirement in May 1998.Dr.. Rahman’s contribution to the field of Cultural Geography of SouthAsia has been recognized worldwide. In Professor Rahman was combinedan activist and quiet researcher. He was a founding member of the OldStudents’ Association of Karachi University (OSAKU), which he served invarious capacities. Besides carrying out advisory duties for the MuslimStudents Association at ISU, he organized for its students and faculty manystudy tours of Pakistan and brought a number of Pakistani scholars to IowaState.His main scholarly contributions are through his very long, sincere, dedicatedservice to the Association of Muslim Social Scientists (AMSS) andthrough his many worthy publications in the field of political and culturalgeography. THE recipient of the Clifford G. Grulee Award of the American Academy of Pediatrics for 1965 is Clarence H. Webb of Shreveport, Louisiana. Born in Shreveport in 1902, Dr. Webb was graduated from Tulane University in 1923 and received his M.D. degree from the same university in 1925. Later—in 1931—he received the M.S. degree in pediatrics from the University of Chicago, where he completed a residency at the Bobs Roberts Hospital. Previously he had a year of residency at the University of Minnesota Hospital. Dr. Webb has been in the private practice of pediatrics in Shreveport since 1931. He has also been visiting lecturer at the Tulane School of Medicine since 1947 and professor of pediatrics in the Postgraduate School of the Louisiana State University School of Medicine since 1956. In addition, he finds time to lecture at the Northwestern College of Nursing in Natchitoches. He holds staff appointments at four private hospitals in the Shreveport area and is chief of pediatrics at Confederate Memorial Hospital. Dr. Webb is a member of a number of medical organizations and has served as president of the Louisiana and Shreveport Pediatric Societies, as well as president of the Shreveport Medical Society. He has been active in many local, state, and national organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America, the Louisiana Public Health Association, from which he received its annual award in 1957; the American Anthropological Association, and the Society for American Archeology. Dr. Webb served as president of the American Academy of Pediatrics in 1962-1963, previously serving as a member of the Executive Board and as chairman of District VIII. These services were outstanding and important.

Penny Beile is associate director for research, education, and engagement at the University of Central Florida, a position she has held since 2013. Prior to this, Beile served as head of the Curriculum Materials Center and interim head of reference services at the University of Central Florida (1998–2013), as head of education resources and social sciences reference librarian at Louisiana State University (1994–98), and as social sciences reference librarian at Miami (OH) University (1992–94).Karen Munro is associate dean of libraries, learning, and research services at Simon Fraser University, a position she has held since 2017. Prior to this, Munro served as head of the Portland Library and Learning Commons at the University of Oregon (2008–17), as e-learning librarian at the University of California-Berkeley (2005–08), and as literature librarian at the University of Oregon (2002–05).

The localized occurrence of salt water in shallow wells on and near the Louisiana State University campus, in addition to shells collected during the drilling of these wells, attracted the attention of geologists to this area prior to 1926. A torsion balance survey in 1931 was followed by a dry hole drilled in 1933 southeast of the present field. Three separate reflection seismograph surveys during the period of 1934 to 1937, on each one of which a well was drilled without establishing production, were made on the University structure prior to discovery in 1938. The location based on the first reflection seismograph survey should have resulted in the discovery of both the shallow and deep production, and the discovery location was finally made because of the oil and gas shows encountered in this abandoned test. After discovery, an additional reflection survey was made to detail the structure as an aid in development.

To promote both learning and horticulture, a 5 year pilot program was implemented with a collaborative effort between the Louisiana State University Horticulture Department and the University Laboratory School. The objective of this program was to develop a hands-on approach to learning which fostered self-discovery and a positive perception of horticulture. First graders were able to experiment in both the greenhouse and in the field with instruction in the classroom. Among the many concepts that the children were Introduced to, they benefitted most from being able to participate and observe the process from seeding to harvesting enabling them to work with the different types of seeds, media, and fertilizers. In the classroom, horticulture was Integrated in every subject of the first grade class. For example, the students learned math by measuring and counting the produce then making charts to report their findings. The result of the program was that the children did in fact obtain a positive perspective of horticulture while developing an awareness of the process of growth and development of horticultural crops. The first grade class received a national award for donating their produce to the local food bank in Baton Rouge.

Louisiana State University (LSU) is a research-intensive co-educational institution and the largest public university in the state of Louisiana. In partnership with federal agencies and private businesses, it operates some of the most important research projects in the nation. LSU Libraries support this research as well as the instructional mission of the university by means of a subject liaison system that incorporates collection development duties. Under the authority of the Collection Development Coordinator, collection development for all schools and departments is assigned to individual librarians. In this chapter, collection development is described generally, with emphasis on monograph selection and as it pertains to the LSU College of Engineering (COE).
