Nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) particles are a new generation of materials reported to remineralize enamel lesions. The purpose we aimed was to compare the in vitro effects of fluoride gel, sodium fluoride toothpaste, and homemade nHAP paste on remineralizing artificial early enamel caries. Methods:  Incipient caries were induced in 21 extracted, sound premolar teeth by storing each specimen in a demineralization solution for 72 hours, followed by pH cycling. The samples (n= 7, each) were then treated with 2% neutral fluoride gel, 0.25% sodium fluoride toothpaste, or homemade nHAP paste, comprising a mixture of nHAP powder and olive oil. After demineralization and remineralization, the results were compared using the DIAGNOdent pen (KaVo, Germany). The data were statistically analyzed using paired t-tests and a one-way ANOVA test. Outcomes: The degree of demineralization in each of the three groups (fluoride gel group, 15.71; sodium fluoride dentifrice group, 15.28; nHAP paste group, 16.71) was significantly elevated compared to baseline (3, 2.5, 2.28, respectively); however, no significant difference was observed between the remineralization readings in each of the three groups (6, 7, 5.5, respectively) (p > 0.05). In conclusion, we concluded that the homemade nHAP paste had a beneficial effect on the remineralization of initial enamel caries lesions.

AbstractBackgroundNanosilver fluoride (NSF) was developed as an alternative in the prevention of dental caries.PurposeThe aim of this study was to test the remineralizing action of NSF on incipient enamel caries and its antimicrobial action on the acid production and adhesion of Streptococcus mutans.MethodsDeciduous enamel fragments were treated with sodium fluoride (NaF), NSF and deionized water. Microhardness, fluorescence spectroscopy and optical coherence tomography imaging were performed on each specimen before chemical caries induction, after caries induction and after 14 days of pH cycling. The treated enamel fragments were also placed into test tubes containing bacterial suspension and saliva. The pH readings and quantification of the adhered microorganisms to the dental enamel were determined. Analysis of variance, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney, Tukey and mixed linear regression model were applied.ResultsNSF and NaF were effective in enamel remineralization, with a statistically significant difference (p<0.001) to deionized water, and they had no statistically significant difference between themselves (p>0.005). NSF had greater effectiveness compared to NaF in preventing decreases of pH and adhesion of S. mutans to the enamel surface, with statistically significant (p<0.001) differences.ConclusionNSF may be more effective than conventional fluorides in treating incipient caries lesions due to its remineralization and antibacterial actions.

ABSTRACT Aim The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the efficiency of the new generation of elastomeric ligatures with innovative designs (SlideTM and AlastiKTM Easy-to-Tie) in reducing frictional resistance (FR) during sliding mechanics as compared with conventional ligatures. Materials and Methods Sixty ligature samples divided into four groups were used for the study. Group A: QuiK-StiK™ (3M Unitek, Monrovia, CA, USA), Group B: AlastiK™ Easy-to-Tie (3M Unitek, Monrovia, CA, USA), Group C: Slide™ (Leone, Firenze, Italy), and Group D: SS ligatures 0.010” (Libral Traders, New Delhi, India). Universal Testing Machine, Instron was used for measuring FR at the bracket-wire interface. Results There was statistically significant difference in FR among all the four groups of ligatures tested (p < 0.001). Slide ligatures produced the least amount of FR followed by SS ligatures, Easy-to-Tie, and QuiK-StiK in the increasing order of the FR values registered. Conclusion SlideTM ligatures may represent a valid alternative to passive self-ligating brackets when minimal amount of friction is desired. Angulation introduced into the elastomeric ligatures reduces the friction in comparison to conventional elastomeric ligatures. Introduction: The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of the bioactive glass, the glass ionomer, and the Erbium YAG laser as liners on the remineralization of the affected dentin. Methods: The present study was conducted on 64 healthy extracted human molars divided into 4 groups, 1 control group and 3 experimental groups. After artificially inducing dentinal caries lesions, each of the experimental groups was applied to the cavity floor and then restored with a composite. The samples were stored after thermocycling in an incubator for two months. Finally, the hardness of the cavity floor was measured at 3 depths of 20, 50 and 100 μm by the Vickers microhardness tester. The dentin conditions underneath the liners were also evaluated with FESEM. Statistical analysis was performed by two-way ANOVA and the post-hoc Games-Howell test (P<0.05). Results: Among the groups, the lowest microhardness value was in the control group (P<0.05) except at a depth of 100 μm; therefore, there was no significant difference between the control group and the bioactive glass (P>0.05). The laser group had the highest microhardness value, which was significantly different from the control group (P<0.05). There was a significant difference between the laser and bioactive glass (P<0.05), except at a depth of 20 μm. The laser and glass ionomer had only a significant difference at a depth of 100 μm (P<0.05). The microhardness value induced by glass ionomer was higher than bioactive glass, which in no depth was significant (P>0.05). Partial dentinal tubule occlusion was observed with FESEM in each of the experimental groups as compared to the control group. Conclusion: The microhardness values were higher in all groups than in the control group. The laser might be more successful in remineralization than the other ones.

    The leading purpose of this work is the development of efficient culture conditions to induce calli from cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata L.) under in vitro conditions. The mature seeds were surface sterilized with combinations of different concentrations of ethanol and NaOCl in different time durations and  were germinated on MS basal medium. The results revealed that the best sterilization method of cabbage seeds was by using 70% ethanol for one minute, followed by 15 min in 2% (NaOCl). Seedlings were used as donor sources for hypocotyls, cotyledon leaves, true leaves, and shoot tip explants. These explants were cultured on different combinations of cytokinins (TDZ, BAP, Ad) and auxins (IAA, NAA, 2, 4-D) then implanted in Murashige and Skoog (MS) media. 4 weeks after culturing, a significant difference was found among the explants in response to plant hormones. The maximum percentage of callus induction (100%) was using the combinations of 1 BAP + 1 2, 4-D, 1 BAP + 1 NAA, and 1 BAP + 2 2,4-D mg. l-1. In addition, explants responses varied and the hypocotyls showed a superior result (85.71 %) as compared to other explants. For callus fresh weight, the combination of 0.22 TDZ + 79.9 Ad mg. l-1    had a significant effect, causing the highest fresh weight (0.2745g), while control treatment gave the lowest mean of 0.0066 g. Data showed that cotyledon explants were significantly superior in giving highest callus fresh weight with the mean of 0.1723 g. On the other hand, hypocotyl explants gave the lowest mean, reaching 0.1542 g.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the sealing of cavities of dentinal occlusal caries lesions, reproduced in vitro, with flow resin compared to cavity restorations presenting healthy dentin using microhybrid composite resin. Methods: The sample consisted of 27 healthy deciduous molars where cavities of approximately 2 mm in the fossa region were performed and occlusal cleft of each tooth were sealed, impermeabilization was performed and the sample was randomly divided into 2 groups: group I underwent cariogenic challenge and occlusal sealing with resin flow. The teeth of group II were restored with microhybrid composite resin. The teeth were immersed in 5% methylene blue for 8 hours at 37° C and washed until all the dye was removed from the surface. The teeth were sectioned in the mesio-distal direction. The penetration of the dye was evaluated: 0- no penetration; 1- dye penetration up to 1/3 of the restoration; 2- dye penetration up to 2/3 of the restoration depth; 3 - penetration of dye into the pulp wall. The results were analyzed by the Biostat 4.0 program. Descriptive analysis and the mode among the examiners submitted to the Mann-Whitney test. Results: There was no significant difference in microleakage between restoration performed in healthy dentin with microhybrid composite resin or maintenance of infected dentin in primary teeth sealed with resin flow (p = 0.6035). Conclusion: It was concluded that the marginal infiltration of primary molars sealed with microhybrid composite resin and resin flow was not influenced by the removal -or not -of the carious tissue or the material used.

ABSTRACT The in vitro effects of long-acting thyroid stimulator (LATS) and thyrotrophin (TSH) on phosphodiesterase activity in human thyroid homogenates were studied. The enzyme activity was estimated by the destruction of 3H-cyclic 3′,5′-adenosine monophosphate. Bovine TSH had no effect on the enzyme activity. Five experiments were carried out using different batches of LATS-IgG and normal IgG which were preincubated with thyroid homogenates or not. There was no significant difference between the enzyme activity with LATS-IgG and that with normal IgG, while the activity was mostly inhibited by theophylline. These data are not consistent with the hypothesis that LATS acts as an antibody to phosphodiesterase.
