scholarly journals Productivity Optimization in a Shopping Complex using Industrial Engineering and Facility Layout Planning Tools

Due to constant supply and demand cycles of grocery, food, dairy & other everyday products in the shopping complexes, there is no provision available for revision of existing Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to evaluate its productivity. The productivity of a shopping complex can be determined in terms of sales, utilization of material, machine and manpower, energy utilization and amount of waste utilized. The aim of this paper is to study existing SOP and plant layout in order to suggest modifications through scientific methods which will reflect in optimized productivity. This study implicates material handling processes and equipment as well. The methodology followed belongs to industrial engineering and facility planning tools and techniques. Layout redesigning is performed following the guidelines of various facility planning experts. Work study, time study is performed under observation of teaching professional and the management of the complex. The improvements emphasize on areas where occurrence of problems is more frequent and wastage amounts are very high. Knowing the fact that various factors such as infrastructure, building and capital constraints are inevitable in redesigning the total plant layout, the improvements suggested achieve increased productivity while following all regulations and limitations. This study will not only provide a betterment to the functioning od that complex, but it will provide guidelines for newly undertaken studies and projects.

Planning and designing of manufacturing processes and material handling equipment are effective, helps to achieve maximum productivity through maximum utilization of the available resources. This paper aims to study the implementations of industrial engineering tools in the manufacturing industry. At the same time, the observations by visiting the industry were made to identify the problems, so that we can make possible improvements. Time study and Layout study techniques helps us to identify and rectify the time lost in unnecessary and unproductive travelling movements of labor and tools. After observing the problems The proposed layout was suggested and Some easy and time effective material handling equipment were suggested. Which helps to increase productivity.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide affordable housing to economically weaker section (EWS). The enormity of India’s housing affordability problem has led the authors to study and analyze the criteria delaying an affordable housing for EWS. The issues affecting supply and demand for affordable housing in Indian urban areas for EWS are analyzed. Design/methodology/approach The judgment sampling is used among housing and planning experts working in five different sectors, including local authorities, housing developers, housing sectors, town planning and property/affordable housing consultants. The study has established the problem and acknowledged 30 factors behind it. A total of 349 questionnaires were administered among the housing experts in 4 states of India. Descriptive statistical method was used to determine the significance of criteria. Findings A complete structure of criteria signifying housing affordability, established by the authors, is validated and analyzed in this paper. The questionnaire surveys were conducted with housing and planning experts across the four states of India to determine household perceptions on the criteria contributing to housing affordability and to rank these criteria according to their importance. The study establishes that the experts’ views on this issue differ insignificantly across different states of India, while they differ in certain levels depending on the urban area. Practical implications To build successful societies for the future, the authors wish to draw closer on affordability issues for EWS. The suggestions prominent information to investors, and real estate firms, which could assistance ecological growth of housing projects that are affordable. Originality/value Based on the examination of the ranking and greatness of housing criteria, this paper further suggests possible developments for EWS in India.

Dynamic programming (DP) inherently provides a methodology for evaluating a series of decisions in order to determine an optimal policy or path forward. The methodology basically enumerates and evaluates alternative states over the planning horizon in formulating the optimum strategy. In the present work, the concept of DP has been applied to pipeline long-range facility planning problems, and further extended to allow evaluation of nth optimum pipeline facility deployments based on cost and/or probabilities of constraints. The best four options were further analyzed considering uncertainties in the cost elements and the resulting economic risk associated with each optimum path. This paper presents the theory behind the extension of the DP methodology to pipeline long-range facility-planning problems over a planning horizon that considers inherent uncertainties in gas supply and demand as well as a range of available facility options. Uncertainties in the size and location of the required facilities to handle the forecast volumes, and associated variances in their respective cost to build and operate the various facilities, are all accounted for. The problem is further complicated by the possible changes in the expected flow from that forecast during design and the resulting penalties associated with the under- or over-sizing of facilities. It was demonstrated that it is important that the off-design flow forecast be evaluated to determine the impact of future variability or changes. The value that the organization can derive from being able to quantify the benefit (or penalty) of forecast uncertainty and over- or under-building long-range facilities, is significant.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss the implementation of lean methodology to reduce the turnaround time (TAT) of a clinical laboratory in a super speciality hospital. Delays in report delivery lead to delayed diagnosis increased waiting time and decreased customer satisfaction. The reduction in TAT will lead to increased patient satisfaction, quality of care, employee satisfaction and ultimately the hospital’s revenue. Design/methodology/approach The generic causes resulting in increasing TAT of clinical laboratories were identified using lean tools and techniques such as value stream mapping (VSM), Gemba, Pareto Analysis and Root Cause Analysis. VSM was used as a tool to analyze the current state of the process and further VSM was used to design the future state with suggestions for process improvements. Findings This study identified 12 major non-value added factors for the hematology laboratory and 5 major non-value added factors for the biochemistry lab which were acting as bottlenecks resulting in limiting throughput. A four-month research study by the authors together with hospital quality department and laboratory staff members led to reduction of the average TAT from 180 to 95minutes in the hematology lab and from 268 to 208 minutes in the biochemistry lab. Practical implications Very few improvement initiatives in Indian healthcare are based on industrial engineering tools and techniques, which might be due to a lack of interaction between healthcare and engineering. The study provides a positive outcome in terms of improving the efficiency of services in hospitals and identifies a scope for lean in the Indian healthcare sector. Social implications Applying lean in the Indian healthcare sector gives its own potential solution to the problem caused, due to a wide gap between lean accessibility and lean implementation. Lean helped in changing the mindset of an organization toward providing the highest quality of services with faster delivery at an optimal cost. Originality/value This paper is an effort to reduce the gap between healthcare and industrial engineering and enhancing the use of lean practices in Indian healthcare. The study is motivated toward implementing lean methodology successfully in services.
