Photovoltac (PV) models play an important role in the simulation analysis and fault diagnosis of PV systems. The<br>single diode model (SDM) is the most frequently used model in research and applications. There are numerous proposed methods to identify the SDM parameters. However, the characteristics of PV cells alter during the lifetime in normal operating environments; these variations may be due to degradation, faults, dust, weed, and so on. Therefore, it is crucial to estimate the actual parameters of the PV cells that represent those present state. The contribution of this study is to propose a method to estimate PV cell parameters on the basis of the measurement data regarding the currents and voltages of the PV module strings. A PV string model is described on the basis of the adaptive SDM for the PV cells in the system, and the parameters of each cell model are obtained by minimizing the difference between the measured string voltages and the string voltages computed by the model. The application of the proposed method to real data measured in a PV power plant is also presented to evaluate the proposed method.

A new hybrid intelligent technique is proposed to evaluate photovoltaic cell model parameters in this paper. The intelligent technique is based on a hybrid of genetic algorithm (GA) and LevenbergMarquardt algorithm (LMA). In the proposed hybrid intelligent technique, the GA firstly searches the entire problem space to get a set of roughly estimated solutions, i.e. near-optimal solutions. Then the LMA performs a local optima search in order to carry out further optimizations. An example has been used to demonstrate the evaluation procedure in order to test the performance of the proposed approach. The results show that the proposed technique has better performance than the GA approach in terms of the objective function value, the computation time and the reconstructedI-Vcurve shape.

This study proposes a memetic approach for optimally determining the parameter values of single-diode-equivalent solar cell model. The memetic algorithm, which combines metaheuristic and gradient-based techniques, has the merit of good performance in both global and local searches. First, 10 single algorithms were considered including genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, particle swarm optimization, harmony search, differential evolution, cuckoo search, least squares method, and pattern search; then their final solutions were used as initial vectors for generalized reduced gradient technique. From this memetic approach, we could further improve the accuracy of the estimated solar cell parameters when compared with single algorithm approaches.

A new Simulink model of a photovoltaic cell has been proposed. The model is focused on the use of a standard SimPowerSystems library with power engineering elements from the MatLab/Simulink software package. The model allows altering the values of solar irradiance, photovoltaic cell temperature and load resistance. The results of the model application are the calculated values of voltages and currents at the photovoltaic cell output. The Simulink model that has been developed implements the known dependence of the photovoltaic cell volt-ampere characteristic by using both standard MatLab/Simulink blocks and special electric SimPowerSystems library blocks. The model is characterized by the fact that the series and parallel resistance of the photovoltaic cell are made in the form of resistors from the SimPowerSystems library. The main calculation algorithm is implemented programmatically by using the “C” programming language. To increase the algorithm stability to algebraic cycles the restrictions parameters are introduced. A new technique of calculating the photovoltaic cell model parameters based on experimental data has been proposed. The technique includes the preparation of a system of equations with experimental values of the photovoltaic cell voltages and currents. Experimental tests have been carried out for the photovoltaic module OSP XTP 250 under different solar irradiance values. The tests showed that the relative error of the Simulink model that has been developed does not exceed 12 %. The Simulink model makes it possible to build photovoltaic modules and then to build schemes of photovoltaic power plants as a part of power supply systems. Due to the latter it is possible to simulate the electricity consumers’ work, weather conditions, and the presence of shadows or pollution on the surface of photovoltaic modules. Also, one can carry out a simulation of increasing failures in power plant photovoltaic modules, e.g. simulating of modules efficiency reducing because of their degradation, or simulating of modules series resistance increasing because of the photovoltaic cell internal contacts deterioration. The Simulink model that has been developed can be used both at the design stage and at the stage of photoelectric power plants operation.

In this paper three different procedures for extracting the current-voltage characteristics of a crystalline photovoltaic module are studied. Each procedure is associated to a solar cell model characterized by a well-defined degree of complexity. The results emphasize that the simple models approximate the current-voltage characteristics of a solar cell as good as the more complex models. Even if all the procedures analysed in this paper approximate well the measured characteristics, the specific model parameters experience a large dispersion. From a broader perspective, the results raise a question mark on the ability of the current procedures to accurately extract the solar cell parameters.

Modeling and simulation of photovoltaic cells or PV cell is becoming important as it provides an easy platform to perform studies on photovoltaic cells and the design and analysis of the system based on photovoltaic cells. In this paper, we present our study of the ordinary photovoltaic module on the basis of one diode and two diode models. Studies are extended to solar cells as solar cells are similar to photodiodes. Performance of the solar cells may be described in terms of ideality factor (α), which decreases with temperature and is observed to affect the performance of the PV cell. PV systems exhibit better performance with diodes having higher values for α. In this paper, our efforts are to study the effects of α on Current and Power versus Voltage characteristics of the solar cells. MATLAB simulation of solar cell systems is a simple and elegant mechanism useful for designing and modeling the framework of the solar power plant

Existing empirical solar cell models use one or two diodes. As the number of diodes in a model increases, the mathematical complexity in deriving model equations also increases. In this paper, a photovoltaic cell is modeled using three diodes. Non-linear mathematical equations governing the I-V and P-V characteristics are summarized and simulated using Matlab looping iterative method. All simulations were performed in Matlab. Comparison is made between all models (one, two and three-diode) for design verification. Results obtained show that as the number of diodes increases in a PV cell model, the open circuit voltage and maximum power decreases for a given set of PV cell parameters. The short circuit current remained at a fixed value irrespective of the number of diodes.

This paper proposes a mathematical programming based approach for optimal estimation of photovoltaic cell model parameters. In this study, solar cell models are used to represent the current-voltage characteristics of the solar cell. The model is represented as a non-linear function that relates the cell current and voltage with some parameters to be estimated. No direct general analytical solution exists for such function. Given the input-output characteristic data of the solar cell, a mathematical programming technique is used to solve a set of transcendental equations to optimally estimate the solar cell parameters.

Convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) is widely used as a microanalysis tool. By the relative position of HOLZ-lines (Higher Order Laue Zone) in CBED-patterns one can determine the unit cell parameters with a high accuracy up to 0.1%. For this purpose, maps of HOLZ-lines are simulated with the help of a computer so that the best matching of maps with experimental CBED-pattern should be reached. In maps, HOLZ-lines are approximated, as a rule, by straight lines. The actual HOLZ-lines, however, are different from the straights. If we decrease accelerating voltage, the difference is increased and, thus, the accuracy of the unit cell parameters determination by the method becomes lower. To improve the accuracy of measurements it is necessary to give up the HOLZ-lines substitution by the straights. According to the kinematical theory a HOLZ-line is merely a fragment of ellipse arc described by the parametric equationwith arc corresponding to change of β parameter from -90° to +90°, wherevector, h - the distance between Laue zones, g - the value of the reciprocal lattice vector, g‖ - the value of the reciprocal lattice vector projection on zero Laue zone.
