Buildings collapses in the Nigerian major urban cites continues to engender an excessive number of fatalities, injuries and property damage. This study investigates whose fault, the clients, engineers, architects, quantity surveyors, town planner or contractors in the cause of incessant collapse of building in Lagos State. Two research approaches were employed - quantitative and interview protocol. The findings revealed that greed and engagement of quacks by building clients, lack of commitment by top management of contracting firms, bribery and corruption among town planning officers ranked highest. Thus, achieving sustainable environment, liveable, viable, quality buildings, and better performance deserves collective responsibilities of key participants in building construction delivery chain, particularly during the early planning and design stage. The study therefore, recommends that the key stakeholders should have a rethink and attitudinal change towards their roles and responsibilities in all matters concerning building construction process and save the country from wanton destruction of precious life and property resulting from incessant buildings collapses in our major urban cities.

AbstractThis chapter explores the “theory of action” underlying the Swedish government’s national school improvement program called Cooperation for Better Schools. We discuss particularly the assumptions about the roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders, including schools, school districts, and universities. Our analysis focuses on the issue of institutional capacity for sustained system improvement. In this regard, our approach draws on the perspectives associated with contemporary policy analysis, which includes greater attention to qualitative and interpretive methods to understand the complexity of policy-induced change in contemporary society. We start by describing the project structure and our method. Thereafter, we analyze the government’s understanding and arguments for why it is important to help underperforming schools, before we give examples about how involved actors define problems and solutions in project documents. In the conclusion, we highlight strengths and deficits in the improvement process.

The extraction of building materials from their resources through harvesting, preservation, and utilization has become a significant segment of human contribution to the global ecosystem since the industrial revolution. Bamboo is the world's fastest-growing woody plant, and bamboo grows multiple times quicker than most species. Housing is one of the focused demands for bamboo, and as a result of the current scarcity of home units, the demand for bamboo is increasing. Bamboo building construction is portrayed by a basic edge approach like that applied in traditional building design and construction. Applying bamboo as an environmentally friendly material is seen as a movement towards creating a sustainable environment and reducing greenhouse emissions. The need to employ government policy in addressing the production and application of bamboo is reported, and the challenges of bamboo in the global market are highlighted in this chapter.

The article presents the results of nationwide surveys on the causes of delays during the implementation of rail investments in Poland, carried out in the Design & Build formula for the design stage. The study did not examine typical causes of threats to general construction works, only those that result from the specifics of works at rail facilities. The survey was conducted with the participation of experts from various industries, representing all the key participants in the investment process. The selection of experts was limited to people who have extensive professional experience in implementing rail projects. Statistical analyzes were performed using the IBM SPSS Statistics 23 package. It was used to test χ2 and a one-way repeated measures ANOVA. The greatest threats to the deadlines for the implementation of rail investments in Poland, which were indicated by the respondents as the delay threats of a high importance are: negligence in the preparation of tender documents and problems with obtaining current maps for project purposes from rail geodesic centers. The research results can be helpful when planning future rail investments, calculating the necessary time reserves and increasing the reliability of the set dates of their completion.

Cybernetics in landscape architecture planning and design are discussed in this paper. There are many differences and characteristic in the area of design products compared with other industrial products. The control stages or steps include: information collection in previous designs, information feedback in the planning and design, information feedback in a building construction or in a partly-finished building, information feedback in the use of a finished building. The article studies integrated ecology and design, integrated uses in urban and landscape areas, the method of interdisciplinary working. System theory is involved in this paper to discuss relevant problems. The paper also discusses the major controllable factor in the ecological strategies, and then examines effective planning and design. This article argues the problem of ecological strategies in the landscape design and planning, and the main contents of ecological strategies. It includes the strategy of landscape sustainable development, which is in conflict with rapid economies and historic preservation, ecological conservation.

Rural primary school undertakes important cultural mission in the construction of new socialist countryside. This thesis puts forward a design of children’s involvement in the planning and design of campus landscape. Taking the renewal design of Huangtu town center primary school as an example, the thesis will draw up the renewal design principle, and discuss the involving ways of children’s participation in the investigation and analysis stage, schematic design stage, and built evaluation stage. Also, it will expound the significance of children’s participation in the planning and design to children’s development and sustainable development of rural primary school and the cultural construction of new socialist countryside.

AbstractThe research on and application of artificial intelligence (AI) has triggered a comprehensive scientific, economic, social and political discussion. Here we argue that statistics, as an interdisciplinary scientific field, plays a substantial role both for the theoretical and practical understanding of AI and for its future development. Statistics might even be considered a core element of AI. With its specialist knowledge of data evaluation, starting with the precise formulation of the research question and passing through a study design stage on to analysis and interpretation of the results, statistics is a natural partner for other disciplines in teaching, research and practice. This paper aims at highlighting the relevance of statistical methodology in the context of AI development. In particular, we discuss contributions of statistics to the field of artificial intelligence concerning methodological development, planning and design of studies, assessment of data quality and data collection, differentiation of causality and associations and assessment of uncertainty in results. Moreover, the paper also discusses the equally necessary and meaningful extensions of curricula in schools and universities to integrate statistical aspects into AI teaching.

Introduction: Improving care coordination for people with rare conditions may help to reduce burden on patients and carers and improve the care that patients receive. We recently developed a taxonomy of different ways of coordinating care for rare conditions. It is not yet known which models of care coordination are appropriate in different situations. This study aimed to: i) explore what types of care coordination may be appropriate in different situations, and ii) use these findings to develop hypothetical models of care coordination for rare conditions. Methods: To explore appropriateness of different types of care coordination, we conducted interviews (n=30), four focus groups (n=22) and two workshops (n=27) with patients, carers, healthcare professionals, commissioners, and charity representatives. Participants were asked about preferences, benefits and challenges, and the factors influencing coordination. Thematic analysis was used to develop hypothetical models of care coordination. Models were refined following feedback from workshop participants. Results: Stakeholders prefer models of care that: are nationally centralised or a hybrid of national and local care, involve professionals collaborating to deliver care, have clear roles and responsibilities outlined (including administrative, coordinator, clinical and charity roles), provide access to records and offer flexible appointments (in terms of timing and mode). Many factors influenced coordination, including those relating to the patient (e.g., condition complexity, patient's location and ability to coordinate their own care), the healthcare professional (e.g., knowledge and time), the healthcare environment (e.g., resources) and societal factors (e.g., availability of funding). We developed and refined ten illustrative hypothetical models of care coordination for rare conditions. Conclusion: Findings underline that different models of care coordination may be appropriate in different situations. It is possible to develop models of care coordination which are tailored to the individual in context. Findings may be used to facilitate planning around which models of care coordination may be appropriate in different services or circumstances. Findings may also be used by key stakeholders (e.g. patient organisations, clinicians and service planners) as a decision-making tool.

Kathmandu valley has been urbanizing rapidly but the planning of neighborhoods is limited to land readjustments and housing developments. The focus of such development is to provide either the service plots or ready to move in housing stock. Residential Environment Satisfaction (RES) has been used as a concept to measure the perceptual dimension neighborhood planning. Moreover, neighborhood safety is a key priority while considering RES. This paper aims to examine the relationships between various factors related to the safety as a measure of the RES in the planned residential neighborhood in Kathmandu Valley. Since the planned cities or communities seem to have better residential satisfaction, the case study area surveyed upon is Purano Sinamangal Town planning, a land pooling area nearly at junction to three major districts of Kathmandu valley. Various factors have been taken as a measure for neighborhood safety including physical and socio-psychological variable. This research is based on a mixed method. A figure of 109 households was determined as sample household size and individual representatives were interviewed for the survey. The research finds that perception of safety is very high depending on the ethnic groups while it is also significant in case of occupation that the respondent holds. The reason for safety highly was found to be dependent upon good street design, the presence of good neighbors and provision of security patrols. Also, annoyance factors such as disturbances from street and vehicles, crimes, neighborly disputes were found to make the neighborhood unsafe. The research concludes that safety is a major concern for RES and it had been perceived by the residents through significant of good neighborly relation and safety measures in road planning and design.
