The problem of reliability of relay protection systems and automation is considered. Based on the analysis results, for the construction of automation systems, a number of mathematical expressions have been proposed that allow at the design stage to assess the fault tolerance of the power supply system with the selected protection devices, thereby simplifying the process of choosing the most preferred system based on the obtained indicators.

Objective: To study the problems and possible solutions in the introduction of an alternating current traction power supply system with catenary supports without rail grounding. Methods: To solve the set tasks, we used the statements and methods of the theory of power supply, experimental planning, mathematical and system analysis, and the theory of electrical measurements. In the experimental studies, the Trans-AURA Emergency Process Recorder and the Tektronix TDS 2014 Digital Oscilloscope were used, and the Aura2000 and MS Excel 2010 software products were used to process the experiment results. Results: The basic requirements for the AC traction power supply system grounding are presented. The flaws of the traditional grounding system of the catenary supports on the rail network are revealed. Two possible directions are described, which allow eliminating issues during the operation of the AC traction power supply system. The first direction requires the introduction of an additional stage into the traction network protection system, which makes it possible to identify short circuits through a high rail-to-earth resistance. The second suggests the need to revise the relay protection system itself, which includes changing the approach to grounding the catenary structures, the methodology for calculating the relay protection settings, a more detailed analysis of electrical safety conditions, etc. An equation has been formulated to determine support-groupto-earth resistance taking into account the group grounding cable and the existing requirements for ensuring the sensitivity of the main protection means, which allows ensuring reliable operation of feeders’ relay protection. The results of experimental tests of electrical safety conditions and electromagnetic influence are presented. The tasks are identified being the essential prerequisite to the widespread introduction of a system with supports without rail network grounding. Practical importance: The developed methodology for selecting the protection settings will make it possible to operate the AC catenary system without the supports’ rail grounding, as well as introduce the proposed additions to the instructions for grounding traction power supply devices at “Russian Railways”

In 110kV railway traction the V/V connection transformers are common used. The distance protection performance for 110kV line connects to V/V traction transformer is analyzed in detail. Then some new advices on setting method for such kind of line protection calculation are proposed. This method is applied to several protection devices in Shandong power supply system. The operating result shows the accuracy of this method.

Aimed at the low voltage power supply of the intelligent terminal equipment controller in 10kV Distribution Power Grid, a new power supply system, which consists of 24V Lead-acid battery charged by photovoltaic (PV) solar panels and current transformers (CT), is researched in this paper. To maximize the charging power, three points Perturb and Observe algorithm with alterable perturbation step is applied. In the CT charging module, a hysteresis comparator and a discharge circuit are properly utilized to stabilize the charging voltage. At the end of this paper, the power supply system is experimentally validated, and can provide 17.45W charging power to battery with efficiency of 84.26%.

A big percent of false actuations of relay protection devices is connected not only with emergency operation modes of a traction power supply system, but also with starting and transient currents flowing in the catenary at movement of heavy-loaded trains, united freight trains, at realization of batch schedule, movement of trains on difficult grading of track and also at the application of recuperation mode by currently used locomotives. The study shows that it is possible to decrease the number of actuations of relay protection devices in described cases by the application of alternative method of analytical presentation of measured signals and the forecasting of dynamics of measurement of starting and transient currents flowing in the catenary.

According to the problems which are relay protection is difficult to adjust and when line fault occurs it will easily get override trip in the underground 6 kV power supply system in Gu Shu-yuan Coal Mine. This paper presents a centralized selective short circuit and leakage protection system. Which focuses on the analysis of the short circuit longitudinal differential protection, based on pattern recognition method of single-phase earth leakage protection principle, and completes the rapidity and selectivity of the leakage fault line selection . Through the simulation, experimental and field operation shows that the schemes can effectively improve the reliability and safety of high voltage power supply system in Gu Shu-yuan Coal Mine ,it also establishes the necessary foundation of the goal of "network relay protection" in high voltage power supply system for in China.
