Здійснено інтегральне аутфітосозологічне оцінювання 41 виду деревних інтродуцентів відділу Pinophyta, які ростуть у ботанічному саду Чернівецького національного університету ім. Юрія Федьковича в умовах відкритого ґрунту. Відповідно до значень вирахуваного для кожного виду аутфітосозологічного індексу досліджувані дендроекзоти віднесено до чотирьох аутфітосозологічних класів (II-V); найбільше видів (27) увійшли до ІІІ класу. Для рослин кожного із аутфітосозологічних класів охарактеризовано ознаки, які найістотніше впливають на фітосозологічну цінність видів: категорія раритетності у Червоному списку МСОП, фітогеографічне та історичне значення, регіональна репрезентативність та кількість штучних природоохоронних об'єктів у межах Чернівецької області, де росте той чи інший вид. Зокрема, найчастіше у дендропарках, парках-пам'ятках садово-паркового мистецтва та у складі пам'яток природи Чернівецької області трапляються Thuja occidentalis L. (30 місцезростань), Pinus strobus L. (22), Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco (19 місцезростань), і в межах 12-14 природоохоронних об'єктів – Pinus nigra J. F. Arnold, Ginkgo biloba L., Chamaecyparis pisifera (Siebold & Zucc.) Endl. Відзначено, що 51,2 % із досліджуваних видів трапляються, окрім ботанічного саду Чернівецького національного університету, також у дендропарках, парках-пам'ятках садово-паркового мистецтва та пам'ятках природи місцевого значення Чернівецької області. Раритетні види деревних інтродуцентів відділу Pinophyta цінні як резерв генетичного матеріалу. Тому особливої охорони потребують ті з них, які перебувають під загрозою зникнення (категорія раритетності у Червоному списку МСОП – CR, EN та VU), а також ті, що увійшли до ІІ аутфітосозологічного класу (Taxodium distichum (L.) Rich., Sequoiadendron giganteum (Lindl.) J. Buchholz, Metasequoia glyptostroboides Hu & W. C. Cheng, Picea koyamae Shiras.), та частина видів, віднесених до ІІІ класу (зокрема, ті з них, які представлені 1-2 особинами лише у ботанічному саду Чернівецького національного університету, і не здатні розмножуватися насіннєвим шляхом). Під час розроблення рекомендацій з ефективної охорони досліджуваних деревних інтродуцентів варто звертати увагу на екологічні вимоги видів, оскільки від цього значною мірою залежить успішність росту і розвитку інтродуцентів.

The relationships between width of annual rings, length of wood cells, and frequency of anticlinal (multiplicative) divisions in fusiform cambial cells were studied by reference to trees of various growth patterns. The trees selected ranged from 8 to 20 in. diameter and included both open-grown specimens with branches close to the ground and forest types with tall, slender shafts. Much fluctuation was noted among individual trees, but in general there was, in the peripheral growth, an inverse relationship between length of wood cells and width of annual rings. The frequency of anticlinal divisions in the cambium remained at a more or less uniform rate in trees with rings from 1.5 to 5 mm wide, but rose sharply when ring width fell below 1.3 mm. This was in contrast to the situation observed earlier in Thuja occidentalis where the rise in frequency of anticlinal divisions was slight and occurred only in trees with rings less than 0.3 mm wide.

AbstractMany woody plant species that originate from various regions of the world have been introduced in other regions or continents and are used in ornamental gardening, silviculture, erosion control, for fruit sources or other purposes. Woody plants selected for introduction usually originate from regions with similar climate conditions; therefore, after certain time lag they start to spread outside places of cultivation, become naturalized or even invasive. In addition to 77 woody alien plant species reported in Lithuania, ten new species were recorded and analysed in this paper. Information on the native and anthropogenic ranges, first record in Lithuania, size of populations, habitats, reproduction and naturalization of Aralia elata, Berberis thunbergii, Caragana frutex, Celastrus orbiculatus, Cornus alba, Cytisus austriacus, Hydrangea arborescens, Pinus strobus, Rhus typhina and Thuja occidentalis is presented. All these species have been introduced intentionally and are used mainly in ornamental gardening. Three of the reported species, Berberis thunbergii, Hydrangea arborescens and Thuja occidentalis, currently are casual species. Remaining seven species were recognized as naturalized in Lithuania, and five of these, i.e. Aralia elata, Celastrus orbiculatus, Cornus alba, Pinus strobus and Rhus typhina as well as Berberis thunbergii, which currently is treated as a casual, have very high or high probability of getting invasive. Constant survey of potential habitats, detection of new escaped alien plants, particularly of trees and shrubs, is the best way to reveal potentially dangerous species and make timely decisions for their control or eradication, if necessary.

Subject of research in this article is the urban dendroflora of the Macedonia Park, situated on about 50,000 m2 in the Macedonian capital city of Skopje, i.e., identification and presence of the recent woody plants. Thus, observed are morphological and ecological features of the woody plants and their current state in this urban environment. The investigation relates to a seven-year period (since the establishment of the Park in 2012 up to late 2019). After the field research and the inventorisation of the woody plants in the Park, 82 taxa were identified, represented in 1,318 individuals. Most represented tree species is the hybrid Platanus × hispanica Mill. ex Münchh. with 103 individuals (7.81% of the overall urban dendroflora). Most frequent tree including infraspecific taxa is Fraxinus excelsior L. (including F. e. ‘Globosa’, F. e. ‘Jaspidea’, and F. e. ‘Pendula’) with a total number of 146 individuals (11.08%). Concerning other growth form, the mini and small tree roses of hybrid Rosa Floribunda Group outnumber all ornamental woody species with 225 bushes (17.07%). Climbers are represented with 3 taxa (3.66% of identified taxa) in pergolas (Wisteria sinensis /Sims/ Sweet, Parthenocissus quinquefolia /L./ Planch.), and wire cage topiary (Hedera helix L.). Likewise, 87 individuals (6.60%) of 10 species (12.19%) occur as remnants of the greening in the past of which 3 species are used as a green core of a small sacral architecture: Cupressus sempervirens var. horizontalis (Mill.) Loudon (with 10 trees), Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco (3), and Pinus nigra J.F.Arnold (1). In general, the urban dendroflora is properly selected and used for greening, although certain species and individuals are withering (e.g. Betula pendula ‘Youngii’, Juniperus scopulorum ‘Skyrocket’, F. e. ‘Jaspidea’) or unsuitably used for avenue and in small alpine-like garden.

Rooting of shoots from in vitro culture of most conifers can be difficult. An antigibberellin, ancymidol, has been shown to promote rooting of in vitro proliferated shoots of asparagus clones, but it has not been tested on conifers. Ancymidol and flurprimidol was tested for rooting on established cultures of Lake States white pine (Pinus strobus). Pulse treatments containing 5 uM ancymidol and 0.5 uM NAA gave 43% rooting, while pulse treatment with 0.5 uM NAA resulted in 7% root formation. Flurprimidol also stimulated root formation on white pine shoots, but was less than ancymidol. Thuja occidentalis `Hetz's Wintergreen' formed roots on 87% of in vitro proliferated shoots when given a pulse treatment with 5 uM ancymidol and 50 uM NAA. Shoots initiated an average of 10 roots after 60 days on vermiculite containing 1/2 liquid MCM medium.

Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco (syn. Thuja orientalis L.), Thuja occidentalis L., and T. plicata D. Don. are conifers often used in the landscape. Most of the available cultivars of these species share the character of having foliage that turns an off-color during winter as a result of photoinhibition. Tetraploids of the related japanese-cedar [Cryptomeria japonica (L. f.) D. Don.] have exhibited greener color retention than diploids during winter and a recent report described a simple technique to double its chromosomes. The technique used to double the chromosome number of C. japonica was applied to the three species mentioned to determine if it would be effective for inducing polyploidy and, if so, optimal duration of treatment. Seedlings were treated at the cotyledon stage for 0 (control), 10, 20, or 30 days with an aqueous solution containing 150 μM oryzalin + 0.1% Tween® 20 using a standard household spray bottle that created a fine mist. No tetraploids were observed for any species in control treatments, indicating all recovered tetraploids resulted from applying oryzalin. Tetraploids were observed for all other treatments except T. plicata at 30 days. Efficacy ranged from 0% to 27.1% of transplanted seedlings being tetraploid. There was a quadratic relationship between duration of treatment and percent tetraploids in T. occidentalis and T. plicata and a linear relationship for P. orientalis. Based on regression analysis, the optimal duration of treatment was 20.5 days for T. occidentalis and 13.9 days for T. plicata. The highest percent tetraploids recovered for P. orientalis was at 30 days and it is unclear if increasing duration beyond this would continue increasing percent tetraploids recovered. Morphology was not useful in early identification of tetraploids for any species.
