<p>Small herbivorous invertebrates consume algal epiphytes, reducing negative effects (e.g. shading) on seagrass. Much research to date has focused on crustacean grazers, and comparatively little on gastropods. The aim of this research was to 1) examine seasonal and spatial variation in seagrass and associated gastropods in a large, tidal estuary and 2) examine the response of seagrass and epiphytic algae to nutrient enrichment and grazing pressure in a laboratory experiment.  Surveys were conducted in summer and winter of 2016 to assess the seasonal fluctuations in the associated gastropods and relationships with seagrass and epiphyte biomass within three sites in the Porirua Harbour. Seagrass, gastropods and epiphytic algae showed seasonal trends, including evidence of a loss of grazer control on epiphytes during winter. Potamopyrgus estuarinus, Notoacmea scapha, Diloma spp. and Micrelenchus spp. were the dominant gastropod grazers in the system in both seasons. The gastropod assemblage and seagrass characteristics differed between sites, likely in response to small scale differences in abiotic factors.  Seagrass from Elsdon (a site with elevated nutrient levels) and Browns Bay (a relatively pristine site) were used to investigate the role of select grazers and nutrient enrichment on epiphyte and seagrass growth. Nutrient treatments represented nitrate and phosphate concentrations of Elsdon (High), a 20% increase (High+) and a control (no addition). Little evidence was found for epiphyte regulation by gastropods, nor did epiphyte loads increase with nutrient addition. Seagrass from Browns Bay responded more strongly to High+ treatments than that of Elsdon. The results suggest that seagrass from Elsdon is adapted to the site’s high nutrient loads, where seagrass from Browns Bay is not. The results of this thesis support prior research findings of high variation in seagrass over a small scale, and adds to the currently lacking information on the role of micro-grazers in New Zealand’s seagrass meadows.</p>

Epiphytic algae are an important group of organisms involved in primary productivity, nutrient cycling, and energy transfer in littoral food webs. However, multifactorial studies conducted on epiphyton on the same substrate across a spectrum of environmental parameters are very limited. Here, we present first complex field study on the role of abiotic and biotic factors in shaping the species richness, diversity, abundance, and biomass composition of epiphyton on common reed in four shallow lakes with different trophic status, water and fish management, and the abundance and structure of potential algal grazers: littoral crustaceans and fish. The obtained results revealed that the algal taxa richness was the lowest in the hypertrophic lake and the highest in the meso-eutrophic lake. Epiphyton abundance (predominated by pennate diatoms) and biomass were found to be the highest in eutrophic water bodies. Biomass consisted primarily of diatoms, but we found the seasonal predominance of filamentous Chlorophyta (in the eutrophic lakes) and Chlorophyceae (in the meso-eutrophic lake). Redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that the frequency of water level fluctuations was the most significant variable in the composition of epiphyton. RDA also revealed the importance of grazing pressure of fish. Thus, in hydrologically transformed lakes, man-made factors may be of great relevance in the development of epiphytic algae.

Trophic cascades occur in many ecosystems, but the factors regulating them are still elusive. We suggest that an overlooked factor is that trophic interactions (TIs) are often scale-dependent and possibly interact across spatial scales. To explore the role of spatial scale for trophic cascades, and particularly the occurrence of cross-scale interactions (CSIs), we collected and analysed food-web data from 139 stations across 32 bays in the Baltic Sea. We found evidence of a four-level trophic cascade linking TIs across two spatial scales: at bay scale, piscivores (perch and pike) controlled mesopredators (three-spined stickleback), which in turn negatively affected epifaunal grazers. At station scale (within bays), grazers on average suppressed epiphytic algae, and indirectly benefitted habitat-forming vegetation. Moreover, the direction and strength of the grazer–algae relationship at station scale depended on the piscivore biomass at bay scale, indicating a cross-scale interaction effect, potentially caused by a shift in grazer assemblage composition. In summary, the trophic cascade from piscivores to algae appears to involve TIs that occur at, but also interact across, different spatial scales. Considering scale-dependence in general, and CSIs in particular, could therefore enhance our understanding of trophic cascades.

Abstract Tomasello offers a compelling account of the emergence of humans’ sense of obligation. We suggest that more needs to be said about the role of affect in the creation of obligations. We also argue that positive emotions such as gratitude evolved to encourage individuals to fulfill cooperative obligations without the negative quality that Tomasello proposes is inherent in obligations.
