The large amounts of natural gas in a dense solid phase stored in the confined environment of porous materials have become a new, potential method for storing and transporting natural gas. However, there is no experimental evidence to accurately determine the phase state of water during nanoscale gas hydrate dissociation. The results on the dissociation behavior of methane hydrates confined in a nanosilica gel and the contained water phase state during hydrate dissociation at temperatures below the ice point and under atmospheric pressure are presented. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) were used to trace the dissociation of confined methane hydrate synthesized from pore water confined inside the nanosilica gel. The characterization of the confined methane hydrate was also analyzed by PXRD. It was found that the confined methane hydrates dissociated into ultra viscous low-density liquid water (LDL) and methane gas. The results showed that the mechanism of confined methane hydrate dissociation at temperatures below the ice point depended on the phase state of water during hydrate dissociation.

Leakage of cryogenic fluid can bring diverse consequences within confined environment like FLNG. In particular, leakage from pressurized refrigerant system is expected to form cryogenic pool, which could initiate brittle fracture of the structure as well as violent evaporation of flammable gas. The authors put the series of different leakage scenarios under light and quantitatively analyzed the potential consequences in an attempt to provide overall pictures of this hazard yet to have been made clear so far. Further, use of brittle fracture arresting steel – a new strain of carbon steel produced through special TMCP technology – was explored on its potential to mitigate the risk.

1. Oxygen dissociation curves of the whole blood of larvae and adults of the Southern Hemisphere lamprey Geotria australis have been determined between pH 6.8 and 8.2 at 5, 15 and 25 degrees C. 2. The P50's at temperatures of 5, 15 and 25 degrees C and a pH of 7.75 were respectively 0.57, 0.92 and 1.19 mmHg in larvae and 6.9, 10.3 and 19.0 mmHg in adults. 3. The relatively very high affinity of larval blood for oxygen may reflect an adaptation to low environmental oxygen tensions. 4. The Bohr shift was not significantly affected by either temperature or life-cycle stage. 5. The slope (n) in Hill plots increased with temperature and oxygen saturation, and was greater in adults than in larvae.
