Much of the earth’s surface is covered by water. As was pointed out in the 2020 edition of the World Water Development Report, climate change challenges the sustainability of global water resources, so it is important to monitor the quality of water to preserve sustainable water resources. Quality of water can be related to the structure of water crystal, the solid-state of water, so methods to understand water crystals can help to improve water quality. As a first step, a water crystal exploratory analysis has been initiated with the cooperation with the Emoto Peace Project (EPP). The 5K EPP dataset has been created as the first world-wide small dataset of water crystals. Our research focused on reducing the inherent limitations when fitting machine learning models to the 5K EPP dataset. One major result is the classification of water crystals and how to split our small dataset into several related groups. Using the 5K EPP dataset of human observations and past research on snow crystal classification, we created a simple set of visual labels to identify water crystal shapes, in 13 categories. A deep learning-based method has been used to automatically do the classification task with a subset of the label dataset. The classification achieved high accuracy when using a fine-tuning technique.

The effects of climate change are felt most at the household level, when taps and springs run dry for several weeks or months, forcing people to access potable water from doubtful sources. There has been an increase in the population of Bamenda III without a proportionate increase in the water supply capacity. This has resulted in severe water crises, even though Bamenda III municipality has water supplies from the Council, Community, CAMWATER, natural springs and streams, wells and boreholes. Household data on water accessibility against a backdrop of a changing climate was collected using 269 questionnaires to assess perceptions on the state of water resources and climate. Rainfall data were collected from 1963-2019 and results revealed that mean annual rainfall is at 182.52 mm, with a standard deviation of 29.16 and a Coefficient of Variation of 15.69%, while the mean Standardized Precipitation Index is -0.07 (mild dryness), and rainfall has reduced by -2.07 mm from 1963-2019. The population attributed problems of water accessibility to climate change, urbanization and poor water governance. It is recommended that sustainable water management through Nature-based Solutions and Ecosystem-based Adaptation should be implemented from the watershed to the community level.

Anthropogenic pollution of water basins may become a serious threat for ecosystems and human health. Pollutants are transferred through food chains or directly when untreated water is used, released to soil through subsoil waters or during floods. The increased anthropogenic load on rivers’ hydrosystems, especially in their del-tas, is becoming rampant these days. The goal of the research is to study the coastal areas and to assess the state of vegetation. To achieve this goal, standard methods of biotesting and bioindication were applied in the territories of two water-protection zones – those of the Volga River and the Nozhovskiy erik (shallow channel in the Volga delta – translator’s note) near the Ilyinka village. The water quality in the Volga River, within the examined range, is stably characterized as “dirty” (4th class). The exceeded level of maximum permissible concentrations for petroleum products, heavy metals (mercury, zinc, molybdenum), sulfides and phenols is observed. The research has not revealed the impact of the quality of water on phytotoxicity of the soil and indices of abundance of the vegetation that grows in this territory. Toxicity of soils is weak in the area of the Nozhovskiy erik, it is very weak in the area of the Volga River: the germination capacity of the test object (watercress) ranges between 67 and 88%, morpho-metric indices of plants do not differ much from those in control groups. Within the summer period the monitoring sites were characterized by the maximum frequency-abundance indices of typical representatives of the local flora, which are camel thorn (Alhagi pseudalhagi) and greater burdock (Arctium lappa). Vegetation in these areas is abundant, its state is assessed as satisfactory.

Measurement of water activity and moisture sorption isotherms of foods and biomaterials are important to determine the state of water. In this work, a dynamic temperature-humidity (DTH) controlled chamber was used to measure water sorption isotherm and compared with the conventional isopiestic method. Temperature and relative humidity of DTH chamber can be controlled in the range of -15 to 100°C and 0 to 98%, respectively; thus, measurement of water activity at any point can be measured within the above ranges. The DTH chamber method showed high reproducibility as compared with the conventional isopiestic method when measured isotherms of cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulase were compared at 30°C. Finally, isotherm data of cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulase were generated in the temperature range of 10-90°C using DTH chamber, and these were modelled by BET and GAB equations. The model parameters were correlated with the temperature.

Intensive development of the oil and gas industry and accidents on oil pipelines become the reason of the environmental tension in the Pechora River basin (Nenets Autonomous District). Data on changes in water quality in five lakes and a small watercourse in the territory of oil fields of the Bolshezemelskaya tundra are presented. The bioindication indices (Berger-Parker (D), Shannon biodiversity (H '), Woodiwiss (W), Pantle-Buck (S), Balushkina (Kch)) were applied. The assessment of the state of water bodies in the Kolva River Basin (large lakes - Kolvaty and Nercheity), in the Laya River Basin (shallow lakes - Krugloye, Bezymyannoe 1, Bezymyannoe 2, stream) was done. The 28 samples of zoobenthos was processed by the standard method in July 2012 and 2019. A low diversity of benthic invertebrates was revealed for 5–20 taxa of the rank of families and orders. During the considered period, the changes have occurred in the structure and composition of the zoobenthos of water bodies. In 2019, the species diversity decreased in Kolvaty Lake (H'<2). There are no species of the crustacean complex (Monoporeia affinis, Mesocyclops leuckarti, Heterocope borealis) and larvae of Trichoptera. Only Sphaeriidae and Chironomidae with a predominance of Psectrocladius psilopterus (D = 55%) were recorded. The species diversity in Nercheity Lake increased (H'> 2) with a change in the dominant taxa: the larvae of the chironomids Ablabesmyia monilis (D = 44%) were found in 2012, the lower crustaceans (D = 47–51%) - in 2019. However, according to the totality of hydrobiological indicators, the quality of water in the lakes of the Kolva River Basin in 2019 compared to 2012 did not change significantly. The quality of water in the Krugloye and Bezymyannoe 1, Bezymyannoe 2 lakes (the Laya River Basin) has improved that is confirmed by a significant increase of species diversity. The most characteristic groups of benthic communities in these lakes are lower crustaceans (Cladocera, Copepoda, Ostracoda) and Chironomidae. The indicators of clean waters are o-β-mesosaprobic species Cladocera, Copepoda Heterocope appendiculata, Heterocope borealis (in the oligotrophic lakes), caddisfly Limnephilus stigma (in the Krugloe Lake), rotifer Polyarthra euryptera (in the Bezymyannoe 2 Lake), mayfly larvae Centroptilum luteolum. More resistant to organic pollution Copepoda began to prevail in abundance and diversity in Bezymyannoe 1 and Bezymyannoe 2 lakes, with a decrease in the taxonomic composition of Cladocera, which indicates the eutrophication of these water bodies. In most lakes, the water corresponds to the III quality class ("moderate pollution"), but in the Kolvaty lake and in the Bezymyanny stream (the Laya River basin) was recorded the biogenic pollution. Totally, insignificant taxonomic changes in zoobenthos structure took place in the lakes and the state of water bodies of the surveyed tundra remains relatively stable.

Emergent and floating macrophytes in relation to some  physicochemical parameters were assessed in Waya pond, Bauchi. Water and macrophytes were sampled monthly between October 2019 to March 2020. Ten physicochemical parameters were measured and twelve macrophytes species recorded. The diversity index was 1.38, evenness (0.55) and abundance were 12 species. The site was polluted as all the values of dissolved oxygen (DO) were ˂ 5 mg/L, nitrogen ˃ 18 mg/L and pH ˂ 7 except for December.  Pearson’s correlation coefficient revealed that DO correlated with Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) (r = 0.936, p˂0.01), Phosphate (r = 0.927, p˂0.01) and Nitrate (r = -0.953, p˂0.01). TDS correlated with Phosphate (r = 0.969, p˂0.01) and Nitrate (r = - 0.938, p˂0.01). The significant correlation between physicochemical parameters and macrophytes were: Nymphaea nouchali with DO (r = - 0.849, p˂0.05), TS (r = 0.88, p˂0.05). Panicum repens was negatively correlated with TDS, DO, TS, Phosphate but not Nitrates. Eichhornia crassipes, Nymphaea micrantha and Nymphaea lotus at p˂0.05 were negatively associated with TDS, DO, and Phosphate but positively with Nitrate. Nuphar lutea, Nelumbo nucifera and Echinochloa colona related positively with Turbidity. Nuphar lutea positively related with Nitrate but negative with DO, and TS. Typha latifolia with TS (r = - 0.871, p˂0.05). Potamogeton natans with phosphate (r = 0.927, p˂0.01). The state of water pollution in the study-area corresponded with low diversity, evenness and abundance of species. This puts biodiversity and sustainability at risk.

В статье на основании авторских эмпирических исследований, проведенных в 2017 г. и 2021 г., рассматривается динамика удовлетворенности молодежи г. Казани экологическими и социальными аспектами качества городской среды. Полученные данные свидетельствуют о том, что экологическая обстановка и состояние городской инфраструктуры сохраняют для молодого поколения свою значимость. При сохранении позитивных тенденций относительно большинства показателей, характеризующих экологическую ситуацию, выявлено снижение доли удовлетворенных состоянием водных объектов и санитарным состоянием города. Что касается городской инфраструктуры, то выявлено снижение удовлетворенности ее общим состоянием, а также такими составляющими как количество организованных автостоянок и количество спортивных объектов. Кроме того, в работе анализируются факторы, определяющие привлекательность для молодежи районов города, и выделяются наиболее важные мероприятия, направленные на улучшение качества городской среды. Based on the author's empirical research carried out in 2017 and 2021, the article examines the dynamics of satisfaction of young people in Kazan with the ecological and social aspects of the quality of the urban environment. The data obtained indicate that the ecological situation and the state of the urban infrastructure retain their importance for the younger generation. While maintaining positive trends in relation to most of the indicators characterizing the ecological situation, a decrease in the share of those satisfied with the state of water bodies and the sanitary state of the city was revealed. As for the state of the urban infrastructure, a decrease in satisfaction with its general state, as well as with such components as the number of organized parking lots and the number of sports facilities, was revealed. The work also analyzes the factors that determine the attractiveness of city districts for young people and highlights the most important measures aimed at improving the quality of the urban environment.

AbstractTotal phosphorus (from now on mentioned as TP) and chlorophyll-a (from now on mentioned as Chl-a) are recognized indicators for phytoplankton large quantity and biomass-thus, actual estimates of the eutrophic state-of water bodies (i.e., reservoirs, lakes and seas). A robust nonparametric method, called support vector regression (SVR) approach, for forecasting the output Chl-a and TP concentrations coming from 268 samples obtained in Tanes reservoir is described in this investigation. Previously, we have carried out a selection of the main features (biological and physico-chemical predictors) employing the multivariate adaptive regression splines approximation to construct reduced models for the purpose of making them easier to interpret for researchers/readers and to reduce the overfitting. As an optimizer, the heuristic technique termed as whale optimization iterative algorithm (WOA), was employed here to optimize the regression parameters with success. Two main results have been obtained. Firstly, the relative relevance of the models variables was stablished. Secondly, the Chl-a and TP can be successfully foretold employing this hybrid WOA/SVR-based approximation. The coincidence between the predicted approximation and the observed data obviously demonstrates the quality of this novel technique.
