BACKGROUND: Clinical manifestation of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) could be asymptomatic, mild to severe, even mortality. Although various hematological complications associated with COVID-19 infection have been reported, the finding of autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is a novel case. CASE REPORT: A 59-year-old woman was admitted to our emergency room because of a 5-day period of fever with cough and shortness of breath. At admission, she was takipnea, jaundice, and had an oxygen saturation of 60% on room air. Laboratory studies showed hemoglobin (Hb) 3.68 g/dL, high reticulocyte (14.4%), and hyperbilirubinemia. Chest X-ray showed bilateral pneumonia with positive severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 polymerase chain reaction test. Although she got packed red cell (PRC) transfusions in 7 days, her Hb remained low and bilateral infiltrate still increased. That’s why we considered direct Coombs test and it returned positive. AIHA was diagnosed and treatment with hydrocortisone 100 mg IV twice daily was given for the first 72 h. The maintenance dose with methylprednisolone 16 mg twice daily was continued for 7 days admission. Then, Hb value increased to 11.03 g/dL and she was discharged home without any compliments. CONCLUSION: In the current epidemiological situation, AIHA needs to be considered as a complication of COVID-19 infection in a patient who presents with jaundice and severe anemia without any underlying chronic disease, which is need blood transfusions, steroid medication use, or blood cancer.

The 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has spread rapidly all over the world. The standard test for screening COVID-19 patients is the polymerase chain reaction test. As this method is time consuming, as an alternative, chest X-rays may be considered for quick screening. However, specialization is required to read COVID-19 chest X-ray images as they vary in features. To address this, we present a multi-channel pre-trained ResNet architecture to facilitate the diagnosis of COVID-19 chest X-ray. Three ResNet-based models were retrained to classify X-rays in a one-against-all basis from (a) normal or diseased, (b) pneumonia or non-pneumonia, and (c) COVID-19 or non-COVID19 individuals. Finally, these three models were ensembled and fine-tuned using X-rays from 1579 normal, 4245 pneumonia, and 184 COVID-19 individuals to classify normal, pneumonia, and COVID-19 cases in a one-against-one framework. Our results show that the ensemble model is more accurate than the single model as it extracts more relevant semantic features for each class. The method provides a precision of 94% and a recall of 100%. It could potentially help clinicians in screening patients for COVID-19, thus facilitating immediate triaging and treatment for better outcomes.

A polymerase chain reaction test was developed to detect Brucella spp. directly in milk and cheese and optimized using primers for the BSCP-31 gene. A total of 46 cheese samples produced with sheep and goats milk were assayed, and Brucella spp. was detected in 46% of them, especially in cheese made from sheep milk. This method is of remarkable epidemiologic interest because it is an indirect test indicating the sanitary quality of milk used in dairy industries. The method showed good sensitivity and specificity. It is faster and less expensive than the conventional bacteriological assays.
