Drawing upon Jasperson, Carter, and Zmud’s feature-centric view of technology (Jasperson, Carter, & Zmud, 2005) and Nahapiet and Ghoshal’s three dimensions of social capital factors (Nahapiet & Ghoshal, 1998), this chapter develops a conceptual model to elaborate the dynamic interactions between Social Network Services (SNS) features, social capital factors, and motivational antecedents on continuous participation in knowledge sharing activities among Online Social Network (OSN) community members. A number of SNS features, social capital factors, and motivational antecedents are set forth in this chapter. And the mechanism that links these factors is reviewed. It is proposed that, with embedded social mechanism, SNS features can strengthen motivations to continued participation through social capital facilitators.

Purpose This study has adopted theoretical frameworks of social capital, social networks and the Community of Practice to study how different types of relationships influence the knowledge sharing relationship. This paper aims to suggest that building social capital, particularly structural capital, is part of expected key in knowledge sharing networks. Design/methodology/approach Using social capital theory, through social network analysis of 111 management students in the US business school, identified key social capital dimension in knowledge sharing networks. To incorporate the interdependency among examined relationships, network logistic regression with the quadric assignment procedure was used. Findings The proposed research model showed that about 98% of the existence of knowledge sharing relationship could be correctly predicted. Among three dimensions of social capital, this study found a superior influence of the structural dimension (i.e. task interdependence) in predicting having a knowledge sharing relationship. The significant effect of trust and friendship network on knowledge sharing was also found. Implications for practice and suggestions for future research were also discussed. Originality/value Existing literature as to how people learn through knowledge sharing is limited in at least two important ways. First, scholars of knowledge management acknowledge that organizational knowledge originates from dyadic relationships between or among individuals at work. However, prior research has heavily relied on survey responses from one’s perception of knowledge sharing experience, viewing as unidirectional. Second, substantial attention of prior research has been devoted to the factors of individual attributes. Emphasizing individual interactions as the fundamental building blocks of learning, this study focuses more on relational characteristics of knowledge sharing based on social capital theory.

Public online social network services have achieved dazzling success in recent years. As a result, vertical social network services for universities are expected warmly by campus users. As the majority of activities in university campus are knowledge and social interaction intensive, one of the core functions of campus social network system is to facilitate knowledge sharing on campus. In the cyberspace of universities, knowledge is stored in various kinds of digital resources such as documents, photos, videos etc. In this paper, we discuss the design and implementation of our campus social network system, concentrating on knowledge sharing mechanism in the system. The knowledge sharing mechanism has five features including the utilization of users? personal social network to facilitate the dissemination of digital resources, the use of a six-tuple model based tagging to realize the unified labeling for digital resources, the fine-grained access control based on friend lists for safer knowledge sharing, the adoption of a multiscale evaluation method for digital resources and personalized recommendation for digital resource with social graph based collaborative filtering as its core idea. With all these considerations, we expect to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of knowledge while enlarging the dissemination scope of digital resources carrying it in cyberspace of universities.

The existing online social network (OSN) services in a multiple-cloud (Multicloud) environment use replications to store user data for improving the service performance. However, it not only generates tremendous traffic for synchronization between data but also stores considerable redundant data, thus causing large storage costs. In addition, it does not provide dynamic load balancing considering the resource status of each cloud. As a result, it cannot cope with the degradation of performance caused by the resource contention. We introduce an adaptive data placement algorithm without the replications for improving the performance of the OSN services in the Multicloud environment. Our approach is designed to avoid server overhead using data balancing technique, which locates data from a cloud to another according to the amount of traffic. To provide acceptable latency delay, it also considers the relationship between users and the distance between user and cloud when transferring data. To validate our approach, we experimented with actual users’ locations and times of use collected from OSN services. Our findings indicate that this approach can reduce the resource contention by an average of more than 59%, reduce storage volume to at least 50%, and maintain the latency delay under 50 ms.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present a conceptual model of how both the benefits and risks of social capital influence online knowledge sharing among virtual community members towards enhancing members’ relationship continuity and virtual community reputations. In addition, this study addresses the effects of complementary resources on knowledge sharing. Design/methodology/approach – The structural equation modelling approach was applied to estimate the conceptual model by using survey data from virtual community members. A total of 626 valid questionnaires were collected. Findings – The empirical results showed that most of the research hypotheses were supported. The benefits of social capital and complementary resources have a positive effect on knowledge sharing, thereby strengthening relationship continuity and community reputation. Furthermore, the risk of social capital has a negative effect on knowledge sharing, as expected. Originality/value – A review of the literature reveals a lack of studies focusing on both the positive and negative influences of social capital on online knowledge sharing. This study therefore contributes to a comprehensive perspective for understanding online knowledge sharing in virtual communities.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the theoretical limitations of the social network theory applied on employee creativity. Design/methodology/approach By combining the social network theory and componential model of creativity, this study studies the possible impact of social capital through its three dimensions (structural, relational and cognitive dimension) on individual creativity, to explore then the moderating effect of cognitive style as individual characteristic on the structural dimension of social capital such weak ties and employee creativity. Findings The results show that, on a sample of 95 employees belonging to four companies in the IT sector, predictions based on the social network theory are only weakly verified. Indeed, the relational and cognitive dimensions of social capital do not have a significant impact on individual creativity. Originality/value Based on Kim et al.’s (2016) call for future research, this study extends the assumptions of the social network theory announcing that social capital through its structural dimension may have an identical impact on individual creativity in all circumstances.
