This chapter aims to present a conceptual model aimed to understand the Intellectual Capital-based (IC) characteristics of the regional innovation capacity. The proposed Regional Innovation Capacity Model (RICM) can be used for interpretative and normative purposes to analyse the innovation dynamics taking place at regional and territorial level. From an interpretative point of view, the model identifies the pillars grounding the innovation capacity of a local system. While, from a normative perspective, the model can inspire the definition of guidelines driving the design and the implementation of actions, projects and programmes aimed to stimulate and sustain regional development dynamics. The RICM adopts a knowledge-based perspective assuming that IC, in the forms of regional knowledge assets, and knowledge dynamics, in the form of knowledge transfer and learning processes, are the drivers of innovative processes and outputs. The chapter concludes proposing a future research agenda.

This chapter aims to identify the determinants that affect innovation capacity at regional level in Europe. It proposes modelling the territorial innovation capacity and identifies relevant factors with influence on the innovation capacity at a regional level. The chapter uses the Regional Innovation Scoreboard database and cluster analysis to detect behavioral patterns in terms of innovation performance in European regions. The results show that innovation capacity is related to regional governance, and particularly regional autonomy, regional control of innovation policy, influencing the affectation of structural funds, and the region's location within the European Union. Cohesion policy criteria is also a significant factor, demonstrating the adequacy of the European regional policy's new programming regarding innovation policy. These results point to the importance of the participation of regions in formulation, and implementation bottom-up strategies to develop innovation dynamics and develop partnerships with other public and/or private actors.

Information and communication technology gradually transform virtual communities to active meeting places for sharing information and for supporting human actions, feelings and needs. In this chapter the authors examine the conceptual definition of virtual community as found in the traditional cyberliterature and extend it to accommodate latest cybertrends. Similar to the ways that previous social and mass media dissolved social boundaries related to time and space, cyber-communities and social software seem to also dissolve the boundaries of identity. This, in turn, questions the trust, privacy and confidentiality of interaction. The authors present a way of classifying and viewing self-presentation regarding cyber-identity management in virtual communities. It is based on the characteristics that cyber-surfers prefer to attribute to themselves and accordingly present themselves to others. In so doing, the authors coin the terms for five distinct phenomena, namely nonymity, anonymity, eponymity, pseudonymity and polynymity. They subsequently compare and contrast these terms, summarising information from their investigation, and outlining emerging questions and issues for a future research agenda.

In scientific literature there is no defining explanation and no relevant theoretical model of knowledge and information. Consequently, the definition of the knowledge economy is very eclectic and vague. As a result of the research, we have presented the definition and the general schematic model of knowledge and information. Knowledge is a product that is hard to define due to its nature, which makes it difficult to determine its value It is natural when it is difficult to determine the value of the knowledge as a product it is actually impossible to commercialize it. There is also no adequate statistical mechanism for assessing the knowledge economy. The issue has been insufficiently studied scientifically both in theoretical and quantitative parameters’ point of view. All these and other factors complicate the formation of a knowledge-based economy in developed countries. As for developing countries, in the best case there are only discussions on these issues.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to review and critique the knowledge management (KM) literature within Entrepreneurial universities, providing an overview of the state of research and outlining a future research agenda. Design/methodology/approach In a systematic literature review, 1106 articles indexed at Scopus were initially submitted to a bibliometric analysis. Finally, 150 papers published in a variety of academic journals specializing in the field of Entrepreneurship, KM and Higher Education were analyzed through a content and a bibliometric analysis to minimize mistakes in interpreting findings of collected studies. Findings KM within entrepreneurial university is a research area of growing importance. Findings show that literature on KM models and tools in the entrepreneurial university is fragmented and dominated by unrelated research. Content analysis shows heterogeneous literature, but four major research streams emerge: knowledge transfer in university–industry collaboration; knowledge creation in entrepreneurship education; KM processes for university spin-offs; entrepreneurial university to support knowledge-based regional development. The results show a failure to address the implications of findings for policy makers, which risks making KM in entrepreneurial universities research irrelevant. Research limitations/implications Although different structured literature reviews (SLRs) exist separately in the field of KM and entrepreneurial universities, to the authors’ best knowledge, no studies exist in the intersection between the two fields. Originality/value The paper presents the first attempt to provide a comprehensive SLR of the articles dealing with models and processes of KM in the entrepreneurial university. Despite the increasing literature, this research area is still fragmented and undertheorized, thus requiring more systematic and holistic studies, considering both the economic and the social aspects of KM within universities. The paper’s findings can offer insights into future research avenues.

In the last few decades, research on teaching heritage language (HL) learners has expanded enormously and encouraged language professionals to work toward responsible curriculum development for this specific type of learners. This article suggests ways to expand current curriculum research and practices with the goal of advancing the HL competence of learners. To this end, this article examines the scope, trends, and issues in recent theoretical and practical studies concerning curriculum development for HL learners from various language backgrounds, especially those in the United States. A definition of HL learners is presented first, which is followed by a discussion of general second language curriculum development frameworks with specific reference to HL instruction. Then, the article examines the contexts, challenges, and possibilities for teaching HLs to school-age children in precollegiate programs. Next, it turns to a discussion of issues and recommendations for teaching postsecondary HL students. The article concludes by discussing curricular and pedagogical recommendations for HL professionals as well as a future research agenda that could promote the advancement of HL competence in all educational institutions.

Purpose: The literature about Competitive Intelligence (CI), as an advanced process of information management orientated towards supporting strategic decision making, has focused on topics related to the definition of the concept and on analyzing its application and the results obtained by large firms and governments through case studies. The literature recognizes that fact that the evolution of this topic creates a need to delve deeper in its study while applying it to other types of organizations and studying the effects that Competitive Intelligence produces in greater depth. Therefore, this study's objective is to analyze the effects that the use of CI has on different financial and not financial variables within a sample of SMEs.Design/methodology: The work follows the classical research scheme with literature review, statement of hypotheses and application of quantitative empirical methodology, collecting information through questionnaires sent by email, for further processing and statistical testing using ANOVA models, which allow get results and conclusions.Findings: This study's contribution comes from providing a new way to focus on the effects of de CI in companies and goes further than most of the studies cases and big companies. Therefore, its contributions are to analyze the effect of the CI within a group of SMEs and, using an empiric methodology, to look for causal relationships through financial and non-financial variables and tests on the hypotheses. The results show that Competitive Intelligence improves SMEs' adaptation capacity to their environment, improves their innovation capacity and supports value creation in their businesses.Research limitations/implications: The lack in the literature from previous studies that focused on samples of SMEs makes it possible to provide guidance and to make comparisons with the work that we carried out here. The sample size (79 companies) makes it difficult to extrapolate results. In addition, in the future it would be more appropriate to identify and analyze variables of different business sectors.Originality/value: This work provides a step forward in measuring the effects generated by Competitive Intelligence in SMEs, making it possible to demonstrate that only case studies have been analyzed. It also incorporates an approach using financial and non-financial variables that can guide future research as well as companies that want to generate their own self-assessment systems.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to contribute to a more complete understanding of logistics preparedness. By comparing extant research in preparedness and logistics with findings from empirical analysis of secondary data, the authors develop a definition of and framework for logistics preparedness, along with suggestions for future research agenda. Design/methodology/approach The authors link the way in which humanitarian organizations define and aim to achieve logistics preparedness with extant academic research. The authors critically analyze public data from 13 organizations that are active in disaster relief and review papers on logistics preparedness and humanitarian logistics. Findings The authors found that, despite the increased attention, there is no unified understanding across organizations about what constitutes logistics preparedness and how it can contribute to improvements in operations. Based on the review of the academic literature, the authors found that the same is true for humanitarian logistics research. The lack of a common understanding has resulted in low visibility of efforts and lack of knowledge on logistics preparedness. Research limitations/implications On the basis of extant research and practice, the authors suggest a definition of and framework for logistics preparedness with related suggestions for future studies. Practical implications Findings can help the humanitarian community gain a better understanding of their efforts related to developing logistics preparedness and can provide a better basis for communicating the need for, and results from, funding in preparedness. Social implications Results can support improvements in humanitarian supply chains, thereby providing affected people with rapid, cost-efficient, and better-adapted responses. Originality/value The findings contribute to humanitarian logistics literature, first by identifying the issues related to the lack of a common definition. Second, the authors extend the understanding of what constitutes logistics preparedness by proposing an operationalized framework and definition. Finally, the authors add to the literature by discussing what future topics and types of research may be required.

Regional innovation potential in Southeast Asia - empirical evidence from a ‘new’ economic geography perspective. This paper presents the methodological approach and some basic empirical evidence of a research project measuring and comparing regional innovation potential in Singapore, Penang (Malaysia), and Bangkok. This project is conceptually situated in the context of a ‘new’ economic geography that integrates contributions from geographical economics and the economics of knowledge, learning and innovation into an established regional science framework. It is suggested that future research into the geography of innovation and knowledge-based regional development should not only focus on the relationship between various spatial scales, but also explore multi-dimensional concepts of territorial and non-territorial space.
