A robust method for local image region feature description based on step sector statistics is proposed in this paper. The means and the standard deviations along the radial direction of the circle image region are extracted through the sector masks, and the rearrangement of these statistics makes this image region description method rotation-robust. The proposed description method is applied in the detection of copy-rotate-move forgery, and it can detect the exact rotation angle between the duplicate regions. With minor extension, the proposed description method can also be applied in the detection of copy-flip-move forgery. The experimental results show that the proposed description method can work well for the detection of copy-rotate/flip-move forgery.

This paper presents an effective local image region description method, called CS-LMP (Center Symmetric Local Multilevel Pattern) descriptor, and its application in image matching. The CS-LMP operator has no exponential computations, so the CS-LMP descriptor can encode the differences of the local intensity values using multiply quantization levels without increasing the dimension of the descriptor. Compared with the binary/ternary pattern based descriptors, the CS-LMP descriptor has better descriptive ability and computational efficiency. Extensive image matching experimental results testified the effectiveness of the proposed CS-LMP descriptor compared with other existing state-of-the-art descriptors.

Nailfold capillaroscopy (NC) is a non-invasive imaging technique employed to assess the condition of blood capillaries in the nailfold. It is particularly useful for early detection of scleroderma spectrum disorders and evaluation of Raynaud's phenomenon. While automated approaches to analysing NC images are relatively rare, they are typically based on extraction and analysis of individual capillaries from the images in order to assign a patient to one of the commonly employed scleroderma patterns. In this chapter, we present a different approach that does not rely on individual capillaries but performs interpretation in a holistic way based on information gathered from an image or a selected image region. In particular, our algorithm employs texture analysis to characterise the underlying patterns, coupled with a classification stage to first identify patterns in fingers, and then, through a voting strategy, reach a decision for a patient. Experimental results on a set of NC images with known ground truth demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach.

The velocities of shear waves propagating along radial direction of birch and elmwood specimens are measured in order to study the effect of anisotropy on shear wave velocity. The relationship between the shear wave velocity and the oscillation direction is examined by rotating an ultrasonic sensor. The results indicate that the effect of anisotropy on shear wave velocity in birch and elmwood specimens is similar to Japanese magnolia specimen. When the oscillation direction of the shear wave corresponds to the certain anisotropic direction of the wood specimen, the shear wave velocity decreases sharply and the relationship between shear wave velocity and rotation angle tends to become discontinuous. The intrinsic birefringence due to the anisotropy of birch and elmwood woods is observed. Their texture anisotropies are strong. In an isotropic nylon, on the contrary, the value of shear wave velocity was similar to a circular ring. This investigation is significant meanings in architectural and civil engineering field.

Superpixels intuitively over-segment an image into small compact regions with homogeneity. Owing to its outstanding performance on region description, superpixels have been widely used in various computer vision tasks as the substitution for pixels. Therefore, efficient algorithms for generating superpixels are still important for advanced visual tasks. In this work, two strategies are presented on conventional simple non-iterative clustering (SNIC) framework, aiming to improve the computational efficiency as well as segmentation performance. Firstly, inter-pixel correlation is introduced to eliminate the redundant inspection of neighboring elements. In addition, it strengthens the color identity in complicated texture regions, thus providing a desirable trade-off between runtime and accuracy. As a result, superpixel centroids are evolved more efficiently and accurately. For further accelerating the framework, a recursive batch processing strategy is proposed to eliminate unnecessary sorting operations. Therefore, a large number of neighboring elements can be assigned directly. Finally, the two strategies result in a novel synergetic non-iterative clustering with efficiency (NICE) method based on SNIC. Experimental results verify that it works 40% faster than conventional framework, while generating comparable superpixels for several quantitative metrics—sometimes even better.

This study empirically explores a cube-shaped tool, focusing on the properties of its angle input. By tracking the fiducial marker on each side of the cube in real-time, basic operations such as rotating and tilting can produce the angle input modalities. We conduct an experiment that investigates the use of the angle input to perform a set of experimental tasks. In the experiment we design an angle selection task, varying the angle position and interval. The experimental results show that for rotation angle even 1 degree of angle can still be accurately discriminated whereas that limit goes beyond 3 degrees in case of tilt. A logarithm model can describe the relationship between angle interval and selection time.

A new image forensics algorithm based on phase correlation is proposed to detect image copy-move forgery. Phase correlation is computed to obtain the typical distribution of correlation value and then minimum variance method is applied to determine the pulse diagram. The spatial offset between copied portion and pasted portion is estimated according to the pulse position, thus the copy-move region can be quickly located. Experimental results indicate that this method is not only implemented easily, but also achieve an effective and accurate location for small tampered areas. With this method, detection accuracy is guaranteed and application scope of the algorithm is extended simultaneously.
