Requirements Capture Analysis for MOOCS in Higher Education

One of the attention grabbing headlines in the last two years has been of hundreds of thousands of students enrolling on MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) that are being offered by some of the world's top Universities. Large numbers of students are starting these courses, and significant numbers – though only a small proportion of the cohorts – are apparently able to pass these courses. There is considerable momentum behind this movement and it is clearly here to stay in some form. This chapter includes a reflection on how MOOCS can become main stream and considers the requirements that such systems should meet, for students as well as for Higher Education (tertiary) institutions. The chapter considers requirements for students of Open and Free Access and the need for high quality materials. Furthermore, it considers how Computer science approaches for requirements capture can be used to identify features for MOOC and shows how these platforms can fit into blended learning.

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are big news in higher education at the moment, with hundreds of the world's leading universities offering free access to lectures and other resources. Many MOOC providers operate through platforms such as edX, a not-for-profit consortium formed by MIT, Harvard and Berkeley, or commercially oriented platforms such as Udacity and Coursera. The last two provide the courses free, but aim to make money by charging for certification, or by making data on MOOC graduates available to recruiters. And the numbers involved are huge: MOOCs can attract tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands, of enrolments.

The management of teaching is connected and could be increased by using a wide range of different methods especially when we refer to Online and Blended learning. In the first part, the paper is aiming at reviewing the literature regarding the concepts and benefits of Online and Blended learning. Based on this considerations, 8 partner universities from 8 countries jointly developed the Project “Modern competences of academic teachers – the key to modern Higher Education Institutions (HEI)” – Acronym MOCAT. The paper underlines the goals and achievements of the MOCAT project that proposes a conceptual process to increase the management performance in teaching. The paper shows in an organized manner the main deficiencies that are altering the teaching competencies of academic teachers and in connection with this, the project offers solutions to improve the methodological competency of the teachers regarding the development and use of modern approaches. The outcomes of the project consist in the development and implementation of a Multicultural Model of an Academic Teacher Competencies and in 10 online courses that represent modern training materials in the field of teaching methodology. In the end are exposed the way the results of the project can be evaluated in time as well as the anticipated effects of the project implementation.

Revolusi industri 4.0 memacu kemunculan perkuliahan berbasis digital. Perguruan tinggi dapat mengantisipasi revolusi industri 4.0 dengan mengembangkan pendidikan tinggi jarak jauh atau terbuka yang dapat diimplementasikan dalam tiga model, yaitu: pembelajaran sepenuhnya online learning; blended learning, atau dikombinasikan dalam mata kuliah. Model pembelajaran MOOCs (massive open online courses) dapat dijadikan pilihan untuk pendidikan terbuka (open education). Inti utama model pembelajaran MOOCs adalah kolaborasi dan konektivitas. Pustakawan berperan untuk mendukung dan memfasilitasi model pembelajaran MOOCs. Pustakawan embedded adalah bagian komunitas model pembelajaran MOOCs dan harus berkolaborasi,menjalin hubungan erat dengan mahasiswa dan dosen. Pustakawan embedded dan model pembelajaran MOOCs memiliki esensi sama yaitu komunitas dan kolaborasi. Penguasaan teknologi informasi, online learning, literasi informasi sebagai kapasitas untuk menghadirkan pustakawan embedded dalam mencapai keberhasilan model pembelajaran MOOCs.

AbstractThe conditions for higher education teachers operating in a technology-enhanced education setting and an open educational context – such as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) – are different when compared to traditional teaching methods (e.g. in a lecture hall). This study investigates the grounds for 20 teachers at Swedish Higher education institutions to be involved in MOOC development projects. Six categories are found and described; including curiosity, merits, teaching development, flexibility, as well as the possibility to disseminate their research and expand their professional networks. Interviewees believed that the work was a viable way to strengthen their research portfolio, while also making a limited effort for teaching, enhancing the dissemination possibilities and strengthening their research networks.

The main aim of this research is to understand future teachers' attitudes, knowledge and needs about Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). These courses may be a supplementary resource in higher education that can fill fields of knowledge which the curriculum could not encompass. In addition, this type of course can contribute significantly to both initial and continuing teacher training. For this reason, understanding students' perspectives on MOOCs is essential. For this reason a questionnaire was administered to students of the Bachelor in Teaching of Childhood Education, Bachelor in Teaching of Primary Education and Master in Training Teachers of Secondary Education (n=145). The results indicate that a large part of the sample confirm not that they do not know anything about MOOCs. The chapter concludes that universities need to train future teachers in MOOC culture. Keeping the focus on the book section “RIA and education practice of MOOCs”, this chapter provides a valuable research insight into the topic of “educational training design.”
