Modern information system environments generally contain complex computing infrastructure often mapping business processes to people and data. Data manipulation to summarize and report meaningful information is commonplace, although some of these systems and techniques have not been extensively exploited within developing countries. Even in developed economies, where resources and experience are abundant and accessible, the process for moving from information management to knowledge management is not well understood and therefore remains a challenge. In this study, a comprehensive process model that guides the transitioning of an existing information system to a knowledge management system is developed and evaluated. The results indicate that the model sufficiently represents and organizes the activities to be carried out to meet the desired outcome of converting an existing information system into a knowledge management system.

Information Systems today are dominated by large amounts of computing infrastructure often mapping business processes to people and data. The conversion of this data into meaningful information is fairly well established, although these systems have not been extensively exploited within developing countries. Even in developed economies, where resources and experience flourish, many still struggle with moving from information management to knowledge management. Given that knowledge is posited as the new organizational wealth, it becomes important to integrate knowledge into improving the business and its operations. In this study, a comprehensive process model that guides the conversion of an existing information system to a knowledge management system is developed and evaluated. This is primarily applicable in the developing country context. The results indicate that the model sufficiently represents and organizes the activities to be carried out to meet the desired outcome of converting an existing information system into a knowledge management system.

<p align="center"><strong>ABSTRACT</strong></p><p><em>This study discusses the Implementation of Knowledge Management System (KMS) at the National Savings Bank (BTN) in South Sumatra, as a government bank. Given the role of banks in the economy and the extraordinary level of competition. This research is expected to be a reference in implementing KMS in banking.</em><em> </em><em>Banks need KMS to run business processes in the application of expertise in organizations, because KMS is able to improve the bank's core competencies. KMS acts as a liaison in the knowledge provider to broaden and deepen knowledge, contribute to overcoming competition between banks in raising funds to create forms of innovative product services provided to the public.</em><em> </em><em>This research is to identify the implementation of KMS in the organization, so it can be seen the success factors of KMS in banking institutions. Data collected by questionnaire, then made a research model. Mengingat peran bank dalam perekonomian dan tingkat persaingan yang luar biasa. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat menjadi referensi dalam mengimplementasikan KMS di perbankan.</em><em> </em><em>Bank membutuhkan KMS untuk menjalankan proses bisnis dalam penerapan keahlian dalam organisasi, karena KMS mampu meningkatkan kompetensi inti bank. KMS bertindak sebagai penghubung dalam penyedia pengetahuan untuk memperluas dan memperdalam pengetahuan, berkontribusi untuk mengatasi persaingan antara bank dalam mengumpulkan dana untuk menciptakan bentuk-bentuk layanan produk inovatif yang disediakan untuk publik.</em><em> </em><em>Penelitian ini untuk mengidentifikasi implementasi KMS dalam organisasi, sehingga dapat dilihat faktor keberhasilan KMS di lembaga perbankan. Data yang dikumpulkan dengan kuesioner, kemudian dibuat model penelitian. Few would refute the importance of harnessing organizational knowledge — for reuse, learning, and process improvement. Once retained in a concrete form, knowledge becomes less fragmented and more easily accessible and useable. Such a knowledge management system indeed becomes a source of competitive advantage for an organization. The key to achieving this is by retaining the existing organizational knowledge so that we do not have to rely solely on available expertise. A number of knowledge management frameworks exist which help us to classify and structure knowledge. No single framework dominates, because different organizations have different needs depending on factors such as culture and business processes. At the same time, there is a lack of case studies on how organizations create or operate such a knowledge management system. In this paper, we present a case study of a knowledge management system used in a specific context — an Australian construction company. The study shows that, at least in this particular context, a knowledge management system can operate only where it does not interfere with the existing workflow of the organization. Furthermore, the importance of retaining valuable tacit knowledge is emphasized. We also discuss the implications for future research and practice.

Purpose The potential for the adoption of a knowledge management system (KMS) is becoming a crucial matter in small and medium enterprises (SMEs); however, there is a scarcity of studies related to KMS adoption in SMEs. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to advance further our understanding of the factors that influence the KMS adoption process among SMEs. Design/methodology/approach The collected sample size was 247 respondents. For statistical analysis, Smart partial least square (PLS) (a structural model-based tool) was used to build, run and validate the process model. PLS regression techniques were used to analyze the latent constructs. Smart PLS exhibits both the measurement model and the structural model. Findings The results indicate that knowledge management capabilities, knowledge sharing, organizational learning capabilities and IT capabilities are the significant factors which influence KMS adoption. This study also identifies some unexpected results. Research limitations/implications The number of responses obtained from the survey was rather small. However, a larger number of responses would probably have resulted in a more accurate finding. Additionally, this study should be verified via a larger sample to increase its generalization. Practical implications The result of this study will provide SMEs with valuable guidelines to better understand what factors should be considered as highly important and thus providing decision makers and managers with valuable insights to increase the adoption level of KMSs. Originality/value The study addresses the research gap by developing and empirically validating a research model of KMS adoption from a different perspective that incorporates critical issues which have never been simultaneously examined.

An integrative, systems-based model of knowledge sharing can provide a way of visualizing the interrelated elements that comprise a knowledge management system. This original model, building on a rhetorical process model of communication, includes both the objective and subjective elements within the human cognition. In addition, it clarifies the purpose and method elements at the center for any effective knowledge system. The model centers on the purpose elements of intentions and audience, and the method elements of technical tools and human processes. The output of knowledge sharing includes objective products and subjective interpretations. Feedback verifies the timeliness and efficiency in the process of building both information and knowledge.

Information systems are widely used in organizations and play a very important role in improving an organization’s performance. In recent years knowledge management has become an important issue for managers, consultants and researchers. This paper describes definition and attribution of management information system and knowledge management. It clarifies points like data, information, process, information systems, management information systems and knowledge management system. The approach of this research is to analyze both systems in order to identify their role in an organization, the relationship between them, discover common and uncommon features between the two systems, determine the added value of knowledge management system to the organization’s performance and efficiency over the existing information system and to find out when an information system becomes a knowledge management system and when it is useful to implement the latter.
