CSR and Social Marketing as Enablers of Recovery After the Global Recession

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a relatively new concept in Turkey. Leading companies including banks stress socially responsible activities in their marketing communications. The recent economic crisis put banks into the center stage again. Turkey was one of the few countries that emerged from the economic downturn relatively quickly. In the initial stages of the crisis, banks faced some criticism for protecting their self-interest more and not acting for the benefit of the society. Later, these criticisms got weaker and less frequent. This chapter examines the behavior of banks during the crisis with respect to CSR and social marketing. Particularly, the chapter analyzes how the banks behaved during the crisis and how they supported small and medium scale enterprises and local communities through CSR strategies, as well as how they utilized CSR efforts as a marketing tool. In addition, the outcome of these strategies is discussed.

Local communities are one of the important areas in the perspective of social development in the 21st century. Enterprises increasingly identify them as key stakeholder. This process is visible especially in companies that declare that they operate in a socially responsible manner. Currently, non-financial reports, which present key data on the achievements and priorities of activities in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), become one of the basic tools of corporate communication. Non-financial reports are prepared based on standards and guidelines developed by independent international organizations and associations. The article verifies two aspects of addressing the subject of local communities in non-financial reports. First, it was analyzed to what extent the adopted standards require organizations to report in detail their activities for or with the participation of local communities, and then to what extent companies communicate their activities concerning local communities.

Regulations on corporate social responsibility, are instruments that fill the space between the codes of law and tradition, and morality. In this way the ethics of the company builds customer confidence, investor interest and pride in employees. Business activities in a global world result in many threats associated with loss of reputation of the company, exposure to the accusation of unethical actions. In this situation, conducting a long-term CSR strategy can become a tool for prevention and building competitive advantage. Among the tools used by organizations, to build socially responsible business the most popular are: eco-labelling, social marketing programs, including the ethics programs for staff and corporate governance. It should be noted that a huge responsibility for the effectiveness of programs and tools for CSR rests with the managers.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether and how corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance contributes to shape firms’ payout policy. In particular, it examines the influence of CSR performance on payout level and payout channel choice (dividend payment or share repurchases). Additionally, it examines the moderating role of CSR performance in the relationship between dividends and share repurchases. Design/methodology/approach Using 397 European companies listed in the STOXX Europe 600 over the period from 2009 to 2014, the authors employ regression analysis to explore the link between CSR performance and payout policy. Findings The first result shows that firms with high CSR performance engage more in payout policy. Second, when choosing between paying dividends and repurchasing stocks, firms with high CSR performance tend to prefer share repurchases. Finally, CSR performance plays an important role in determining the relationship between dividends and repurchases. Specifically, dividends and share repurchases seem to be more substitutable among socially responsible firms. Practical implications Firms that are able to develop successful CSR strategies can generate tangible benefits for their shareholders in the form of high payout levels. An increase in CSR expenditure does not lead to cut or minimize the cash flow paid out to shareholders. In addition, government and regulators have to oblige or at least encourage socially responsible firms to use executive stock option that are dividend protected, in order to reduce distortions in dividend policy. Originality/value This is the first attempt to investigate the association between CSR performance and share repurchase activities.

Employee Volunteering (EV) schemes represent a cornerstone of many company Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategies, being identified as a classic “win-win” situation in which businesses contribute significant resources into local communities while gaining a more skilled and engaged workforce and increased reputational benefits. This article questions the “win-win” scenario of EV arguing that existing research has focused predominantly upon the business–employee dimension while largely ignoring the role of third sector organizations engaging in these relationships. By focusing more directly on third sector experiences, the article identifies four “gaps” which place considerable constraints on the reach and impact of EV. It demonstrates the importance of not simply presuming a “win” for the third sector and the added value that can be gained from redirecting EV research toward the “business/nonprofit interface.”

The purpose of this chapter is to provide an understanding of the principles and practices of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and to discuss how the concept of collaboration can facilitate the implementation of CSR strategies and operations. Increasing numbers of tourism companies are incorporating the concept of CSR in their business models, to improve the environment, the quality of life of local communities and the welfare of their employees. The chapter first illustrates and discusses the principles of CSR, and identifies the key benefits of incorporating CSR such as efficiencies, improved stakeholder relationships and enhanced profitability. Next, the chapter highlights the necessary changes in organisational attitudes and behaviour needed to underpin the implementation of CSR. Finally, it identifies the roles of internal and external stakeholders and suggests how collaboration among stakeholders can contribute to positive societal change.

Abstract What influences firms to engage in socially responsible (irresponsible) activities? Corporate social responsibility (CSR), the efforts of firms to create a positive and desirable impact on society, and corporate social irresponsibility (CSI), contrary actions of unethical behavior that negatively influence society, have become an important focus of discussion for both corporations and scholars. Despite this interest, our understanding of organizations’ socially responsible (irresponsible) actions and their antecedents is still developing. A dearth of knowledge about the multi-level nature of the drivers of CSR and CSI continues to exist. Utilizing a longitudinal sample composed of 899 firms in 66 industries, we follow a prominent model to empirically examine industry-, firm-, and individual-level effects on CSR and CSI. Employing variance decomposition analysis, our results confirm that all three levels of investigation do indeed influence CSR and CSI. More substantively, our analysis estimates the magnitude of the effects attributable to each of the three levels for both CSR and CSI. We also compare multi-level influences on two separate CSR strategies, those targeting primary stakeholders (strategic CSR) and those targeting secondary stakeholders (social CSR). We find greater industry- and firmlevel effects on social CSR, and higher individual-level effects on strategic CSR. Our results build on the conceptual work of previous authors by providing empirical analyses to confirm multilevel influences on CSR and extending prior multi-level theory to the concept of CSI. Further, we add to the emerging literature regarding stakeholder demands by examining the various influences on CSR strategies targeting different stakeholder groups.

aVenezuelan Tax Law as a Promoter of Corporate Social Responsibility   RESUMEN El presente artículo tiene por objetivo disertar sobre los dispositivos contenidos en la legislación tributaria venezolana que actúan como promotores de la responsabilidad social empresarial (RSE), para ello se utilizó el paradigma Cualitativo, bajo un enfoque hermenéutico – interpretativo, cuyo método fue análisis de contenido. En tal sentido se han observado los aspectos, elementos y mecanismos que se encuentran en la LISLR, LIVA y LOCTI que fomentan, incentivan o coadyuvan la RSE; finalmente se plantearan lineamientos para la aceptación de una nueva cultura de RSE con dimensión tributaria. Considerando, que dentro de la legislación tributaria no existen dispositivos específicos que promuevan la RSE, y, ello debe ser tomado en cuenta por el legislador para modificar ciertas normas y crear el incentivo necesario para que las empresas sean de forma congruente socialmente responsables. ABSTRACT The objective of this study is to explore regulatory provisions from Venezuelan tax law as promoters of corporate social responsibility (CSR). For the methodological analysis of content, the study uses the qualitative paradigm and a hermeneutical-interpretative approach. The research observes different elements and mechanisms from LISLR, LIVA and LOCTI which encourage and contribute to corporate social responsibility. The study also proposes guidelines for the acceptance of a CSR culture from a tax dimension. The fact that there are no regulatory provisions within the Venezuelan tax law needs to be taken into account by legislators in order to amend certain norms and create the necessary incentives for companies to be socially responsible. If corporate social responsibility (CSR) is expected to work efficiently, there should be a standardised approach for implementation of the CSR concept for all businesses, including companies operating in the energy sector. Although many companies declare compliance with CSR standards, further investigation should be undertaken to evaluate if and how those standards have been applied in practice. The aim of this research is to examine the level of standardisation of the CSR activities within Polish energy companies and explore the good practices developed by those companies. The Polish energy companies have been selected for the investigation as the literature review we conducted demonstrates that there is limited research in this area and there is a knowledge gap regarding how Polish energy companies apply CSR regulation in practice. To accomplish the stated aims, the following research questions were developed: (1) What is the essence of applying the CSR concept in Polish energy companies, and at what level of development is the concept applied? (2) To what extent do Polish energy companies have a common approach to the CSR concept, and in what areas are there differences? (3) To what extent have Polish energy companies applied global CSR standards and solutions? (4) Is there a gap between the declared measures of CSR and their actual implementation in Polish energy companies? The research methodology of this study is based on a systematic literature review of the sources acquired from databases such as ProQuest, Emerald, SCOPUS and the Jagiellonian University Library. The multiple case study approach was identified as the most suitable research tool. Companies for the study were selected according to their affiliation to the energy sector and listing on the main market of the Warsaw Stock Exchange. These two assumptions allowed us to base this study on the largest Polish energy companies that have international status. Six areas of CSR annual report disclosures have been identified and used for the investigation and analysis. This research looks at similarities and difference between these six aspects of CSRs disclosed by Polish energy companies. The investigation allows us to conclude that the top three energy companies use similar tools to build their CSR strategies: formalised CSR concept, published CSR reports, disclosure of CSR information on the company website, CSR related activities offered to stakeholders, obtained CSR certificates, and CSR awards. This indicates the existence of a standardised approach to CSR across Polish energy companies.

AbstractIn essence firms or companies are usually thought to exist to make products for or provide services of some sort to third parties, other companies or individuals. The philosophical question which naturally arises then is ‘to the benefit of whom should a firm’s activities be aimed?’ Possible answers include the owners of the firm, the firm’s employees or wider society, the firm’s local community or their host nation. It is because of firms’ location within a wider society that the issue of corporate social responsibility arises. The issue is do they contribute in a positive way to the fabric of society. In this paper we conduct an exploratory investigation whose research questions, broadly, are whether there is public evidence of corporate social responsibility activity by firms listed in the UK and to what extent, if any, such activities may amount to genuinely socially responsible management by the firms. We examined the most up to date annual reports of a split sample of 36 firms listed in the FTSE 350. The short answers to the two research questions above are: to some degree and no by some margin, based on data from the sample firms.
