The retailing giant Wal-Mart owes its success to the efficient use of information technology in its operations. One of the noteworthy advances made by Wal-Mart is the development of the data warehouse which gives the company a strategic advantage over its competitors. In this chapter, the planning and implementation of the Wal-Mart data warehouse is described and its integration with the operational systems is discussed. The chapter also highlights some of the problems encountered in the developmental process of the data warehouse. The implications of the recent advances in technologies such as RFID, which is likely to play an important role in the Wal-Mart data warehouse in future, is also detailed in this chapter.

In data warehousing, the data from source systems are populated into a central data warehouse (DW) through extraction, transformation and loading (ETL). The standard ETL approach usually uses sequential jobs to process the data with dependencies, such as dimension and fact data. It is a non-trivial task to process the so-called early-/late-arriving data, which arrive out of order. This paper proposes a two-level data staging area method to optimize ETL. The proposed method is an all-in-one solution that supports processing different types of data from operational systems, including early-/late-arriving data, and fast-/slowly-changing data. The introduced additional staging area decouples loading process from data extraction and transformation, which improves ETL flexibility and minimizes intervention to the data warehouse. This paper evaluates the proposed method empirically, which shows that it is more efficient and less intrusive than the standard ETL method.

The history of lexicography in Iran dates back to more than 2,000 years ago, to the time of the compilation of bilingual and monolingual lexicons for the Middle Persian language. After a review of the long and rich tradition of Persian lexicography, the chapter gives an account of the state of the art in the modern era by describing recent advances and developments in this field. During the last three or four decades, in line with the advancements in western countries, Iranian lexicography evolved from its traditional state into a modern professional and academic activity trying to improve the form and content of dictionaries by implementing the following factors: the latest achievements in theoretical and applied linguistics related to lexicography; and the computer techniques and information technology and corpus-based approach to lexicography.

Information Technology (IT) has been able to made improve the effectiveness, efficiency, competitiveness, and support the managerial activities of the organization. Here are discussed about the implementation of Viewboard application for an educational institution as a module assistant of leadership in making strategic decisions. Viewboard applications developed based on existing databases on other systems as a data warehouse. In the implementation, the Viewboard applications built using the PHP programming language for the front-office interface with the concept of Artificial Informatics as a result of the processed grain database query. The Viewboard application has been tested for statistical measure of student overview on Higher Education Academic Raharja as a development and research Viewboard done. The final results show that the test can pull Viewboard processed data from an existing repository database and display the information is critical to the presentation of the characteristics of Artificial Informatics.

The increased use of information technology leads to the generation of huge amounts of data which have to be stored and analyzed by appropriate systems. Data warehouse systems allow the storage of these data in a special multidimensional data base. Based on a data warehouse, business intelligence systems provide different analysis methods such as online analytical processing (OLAP) and data mining to analyze these data. Although these systems are already widely used and the usage is still growing, their application in the area of electronic human resource management (e-HRM) is rather scarce. Therefore, the objective of this article is to depict the components and functionality of these systems and to illustrate the application possibilities and benefits of these systems by selected application examples in the context of e-HRM.

A data warehouse (DW) is a complete intelligent data storage and information delivery or distribution solution enabling users to customize the flow of information through their organization (Inmon & Hackathorn, 2002). It provides all authorized members of users’ organization with flexible, secure, and rapid access to critical information and intelligent reporting. DW can extract information from sources anywhere in the world and then delivers intelligence anywhere in the world. It connects to any platform, database, data source, and it will also scale to businesses and applications of any size. As early as the 1970’s, data warehousing software (DWS) was recognized when the earliest systems were first developed. The database designs of operational systems were not effective enough for the information analysis and reporting (The Data Warehousing Information Center, 2006).
