Using Semantis Web Technologies within E-Learning Applications

This chapter reveals how the Web has improved e-learning as well as some of the problems that came along with it. It argues that the main problem is the gap between two groups involved on Web-based learning. The first group spent its energy studying learning processes, although they are not concerned with reducing the costs and the work necessary for the development and management of such systems. On the other hand, the second group aims at facilitating the construction and management of the courses, without turning its efforts toward learning subject. In this chapter, the union of technologies developed by both groups, such as intelligent tutoring systems, adaptive hypermedia, learning management systems, and learning objects, is discussed. The proposal to put together the four technologies is based on Semantic Web technologies, aiming to solve problems faced by developers, teachers, and learners of Web-based learning.

With the proliferation of learning resources on the Web, finding suitable content (using telephone) has become a rigorous task for voice-based online learners to achieve better performance. The problem with Finding Content Suitability (FCS) with voice E-Learning applications is more complex when the sight-impaired learner is involved. Existing voice-enabled applications in the domain of E-Learning lack the attributes of adaptive and reusable learning objects to be able to address the FCS problem. This study provides a Voice-enabled Framework for Recommender and Adaptation (VeFRA) Systems in E-learning and an implementation of a system based on the framework with dual user interfaces – voice and Web. A usability study was carried out in a visually impaired and non-visually impaired school using the International Standard Organization’s (ISO) 9241-11 specification to determine the level of effectiveness, efficiency and user satisfaction. The result of the usability evaluation reveals that the prototype application developed for the school has “Good Usability” rating of 4.13 out of 5 scale. This shows that the application will not only complement existing mobile and Web-based learning systems, but will be of immense benefit to users, based on the system’s capacity for taking autonomous decisions that are capable of adapting to the needs of both visually impaired and non-visually impaired learners.

This chapter emphasizes integration of Semantic Web technologies in intelligent learning systems by giving a proposal for an intelligent learning management system (ILMS) architecture we named Multitutor. This system is a Web-based environment forth development of e-learning courses and for the use of them by the students. Multitutor is designed as a Web-classroom client-server system, ontologically founded, and is built using modern intelligent and Web-related technologies. This system enables the teachers to develop tutoring systems for any course. The teacher has to define the metadata of the course: chapters, the lessons and the tests, the references of the learning materials. We also show how the Multitutor system can be employed to develop learning systems that use ontologically created learning materials as well as Web services. As an illustration we describe a simple Petri net teaching system that is based on the Petrinet infrastructure for the Semantic Web.

The increasing number of available resources that may be used during e-learning can raise problems of access, management and sharing. An e-learning application therefore shares the same problem of relevance to the Web concerning the access to learning resources. Semantic web technologies provide promising solutions to such problems. One main feature of this new web generation is the shared understanding based on ontologies. This chapter presents an approach to index learning resources semantically using a LOM ontology. This ontology was developed to clarify the concepts, and to describe the existing relations between elements of the LOM standard. The author present also our tool based on this ontology which allows to describe learning objects and helps retrieving them.

To cope with the increasing trend of learning demand and limited resources, most universities are taking advantage of Web-based technology for their distance education or e-learning (Montelpare & Williams, 2000). One of the reasons is due to the significant price drop of personal computers in recent decades; the Internet and multimedia have penetrated into most households. Moreover, most students prefer to learn from an interactive environment through a self-paced style. Under the Web-based learning model, students can learn anytime, anywhere because they are not required to go to school on schedule (Appelt, 1997). Meanwhile, universities also enjoy the economic benefit due to the large student base that can share the development cost of course materials and other operational expenses. Gradually, more and more universities follow this similar way to provide online education.


Data mining is the concept for extracting the appropriate data from the large set of database. In today’s world it is widely used for many applications where learning applications is one of the major part. The e-Learning is the booming technology where anyone can learn everything from any part of the world. It is the digital way of learning the concepts and does not require the help of other persons to do so. It also requires the large space for data storage such as user information, course records and course details and so on. There are lot of learning applications available on the internet among which some might be subjected to frauds. So the security is the demanding thing every users looking for to protect their details. The users also seek for flexibility of using the applications. In perspective of distributed world, the complexity and interoperability of the data brings challenges in e-learning domain.Depends upon learner’s choice, the web based learning modules were developed for the students. Thus, a holistic approach is required for achieving the personalized content since the student groups are heterogeneous in nature. In addition to, the personalized content has to be protected in order to maintain the data integrity and privacy of the users. In this work, we survey about the present scenario of the web-based e-learning systems. Initially, we present the services oriented architecture of the e-learning systems and also clearly explain the different elearning layers.Then, we portray the existing studies processed in web based e-learning systems. Finally, we discuss about the challenges still persists in web-based learning systems. This paper will guide the upcoming researchers in e-learning fields.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of user’s learning style (including accommodators, divergers, convergers, and assimilators) on user’s satisfaction on the web-based learning system and their learning effectiveness. Design/methodology/approach This experimental research used the college students from a technology institute in Taiwan as the subject sources. By using the Kolb’s learning style model, the students are classified as four types of learners: convergers, divergers, assimilators, and accommodators. The authors analyzed the relationships among the different learning styles with their effectiveness of learning and satisfaction of using the web-based learning system. The mediation effect of gender is also presented. Findings This research indicates that: first, the satisfaction of the web-based learning system has significant influence on the learning performance of learners; second, different learning styles learners have no significant effect to the satisfaction on using the web-based learning system; third, learning effectiveness has significant difference among different learning style learners on the web-based learning system; the learning effectiveness of accommodators and divergers was significantly higher than the assimilators; fourth, different learning styles learners show significant difference in gender proportion. In addition to accommodators, whose proportion of women is higher than men, the other three learning styles’ proportions in men are higher than women. Research limitations/implications This study was grounded in the Kolb’s learning style theory. The authors provide implications for academic studies in e-learning research stream that aimed at understanding the role of learning style as well as gender differences in the asynchronous web-based learning system. Practical implications Results from this study provided the implications for students, educators, and e-learning system designers. The design of teaching materials as well as functions of e-learning systems should take learners’ learning style into consideration to ensure the best learning outcome. Originality/value This study examined the students’ learning style as well as gender differences in the asynchronous web-based learning system. An experiment was conducted to ensure the data were collected in a controlled environment, thus, offer the value that most of the prior study lacks.


This special issue of the Knowledge Management & E-Learning: an international journal(KM&EL) aims to stimulate interest in the web based issues in both teaching and learning, expose natural collaboration among the authors and readers, inform the larger research community of the interest and importance of this area and create a forum for evaluating innovations and challenges. We intend to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in developing and enhancing web-based learning environment. The objectives for this attempt are to provide a forum for discussion of ideas and techniques developed and used in web based learning. In addition the issue can also be used for educators and developers to discuss requirements for web-based education. Both theoretical papers and papers reporting implementation models, technology used and practical results are included in the issue.

This research aimed to improve the quality of learning by providing teaching materials to students in an easier way, can be accessed at any time by implementing e-learning in MICE Studies Program Department of Business Administration. Generally students understand e-Iearning as a learning method that utilizes the Internet and online computer. So this will facilitate the implementation and utilization of e-Iearning at the Department of Business Administration. This research utilizes a Content Management System (CMS) Moodle as a means to build applications web-based learning, CMS Moodle been already popular used so expect faculty and students can easily use and CMS Moodle is available directly in the web hosting services that can save time installation This research is also expected to motivate the teaching staff be more active in preparing and making teaching materials for the learning process can run better
