Thanks to the explosion of the wireless technology, mobile environments are becoming the leading software platforms for extracting knowledge and interacting with enterprise information systems. Data and services availability at all times is the major benefit coming from such deployment scenario, but new research challenges pose serious limitations concerning data engineering issues. In fact, although if one can suppose that re-writing and re-adapting data structures, algorithms, and data reliability/dependability schemes is the natural way to support efficient data management on mobile environments, new issues and old limitations arise, particularly for what concerns with data availability and consistency in wireless network environments.

Significant changes in information technology (IT), the Internet, and e-business technology have increased the need for continuous and agile data access, in particular for mission-critical applications. Modern business computing has evolved into an organizational engine that drives business and provides a powerful source for competitive advantage. IT has been integrated into organizational operations and activities in a way that application downtime is not an option since each hour, even minute of downtime may generate negative financial effects. In order to achieve higher levels of competitiveness, business has to be continuous from data availability perspective and agile with regard to data access. An enterprise information system (EIS) can be qualified as “high-quality” in terms of its architecture, application platform, and information it can provide to users but if that information is unavailable when it is needed by customer, manager, or any other end user, the value of that EIS simply becomes “zeroed” from end-users’ point of view. The chapter presents a framework for implementation of continuous computing technologies for improving business continuity. The framework is presented within a systemic view of developing an “always-on” enterprise information system.

The smart city concept, in which data from different systems are available, contains a multitude of critical infrastructures. This data availability opens new research opportunities in the study of the interdependency between those critical infrastructures and cascading effects solutions and focuses on the smart city as a network of critical infrastructures. This paper proposes an integrated resilience system linking interconnected critical infrastructures in a smart city to improve disaster resilience. A data-driven approach is considered, using artificial intelligence and methods to minimize cascading effects and the destruction of failing critical infrastructures and their components (at a city level). The proposed approach allows rapid recovery of infrastructures’ service performance levels after disasters while keeping the coverage of the assessment of risks, prevention, detection, response, and mitigation of consequences. The proposed approach has the originality and the practical implication of providing a decision support system that handles the infrastructures that will support the city disaster management system—make the city prepare, adapt, absorb, respond, and recover from disasters by taking advantage of the interconnections between its various critical infrastructures to increase the overall resilience capacity. The city of Lisbon (Portugal) is used as a case to show the practical application of the approach.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to articulate clear understanding about the role of enterprise information systems (EIS) in developing innovative business practices. Particularly, it aims to explore the different ways that make EIS enables innovation development. Design/methodology/approach – The study adopted exploratory case study, based on qualitative approach. Investigations included two case studies each involved interviewing a number of senior information technology staff, working at these cases. Findings – The paper provides empirical insights about the EIS role in enabling innovation. The analysis of the case studies revealed that integrating an EIS with other system(s) or with digital devices can provide new practices that could not be easily available without these technologies. The study also found that applying data analytics tools into data accumulated from EIS, to extract new insights, lead to innovative practices. Practical implications – The study provides a set of recommendations for organizations interested to maximize the benefits from their investments in EIS. Originality/value – The paper provides evidences from cases in United Arab Emirates for the EIS role in enabling business innovation.
