This article traces past research on the application of the systems approach to information systems development within the disciplines of information systems and software engineering. Their origins historically are related to a number of areas, including general systems theory. While potential improvement of software development practices is linked by some leading experts to the application of more systemic methods, the current state of the practice in software engineering and information systems development shows this is some way from being achieved. The authors propose possible directions for future research and practical work on bringing together both fields with systems thinking.

Information security is currently considered to be a crucial aspect of systems development. However it has traditionally been considered during the final stages of development, once the main components of the system have been developed and therefore provides solutions which are inappropriate for security integration. Software engineering has traditionally been separated from security engineering, and security issues have not usually been included in software engineering processes, activities, techniques, models, and so on. Furthermore, security engineering has not been aligned with information systems, and has focused rather on the definition of protocols, cryptographic algorithms, access control policies, etc. However, the scientific community is beginning to realize the importance of aligning software engineering and security engineering in order to develop more secure systems. Security in software engineering is a branch of research in which many contributions dealing with security integration from the early development stages have recently appeared. This chapter discusses some of the most interesting contributions in this area, and also provides a summary of our contributions through the development of various research lines dealing with different strategies to integrate security into information systems development as early in the development stages as is possible.

Although the concepts of security and trust play an important issue in the development of information systems, they have been mainly neglected by software engineering methodologies. In this chapter, we present an approach that considers security and trust throughout the software development process. Our approach integrates two prominent software engineering approaches, one that provides a security-oriented process and one that provides a trust management process. The result is the de-velopment of a methodology that considers security and trust issues as part of its development process. Such integration represents an advance over the current state of the art by providing the ?rst effort to consider security and trust issues under a single software engineering methodology. A case study from the health domain is employed to illustrate our approach.

The success of information systems development activities are influenced by technology and human resources. Experience and knowledge of team members is the key to performance improvements in the software development process. So the experience and knowledge are considered to be one of the main capitals in the success of a software development team. However, what if the information system development team are students who may not have experience at all ? Is the information system developed by an un-experienced team always fail ? Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a study to identify the factors that influence the student teams in information systems development project. The study was conducted with the literature study to establish research model. Furthermore, a survey conducted by distributing questionnaires to students of information systems whom are doing an internship in developing information systems. The results of the survey were analyzed quantitatively using Partial Least Square technique to test the proposed research model. The results of this study indicate that the development of information systems conducted by a team of students is significantly influenced by the Customer Relationship and Horizontal Relationship. Capability factor have a significant effect although the effect is small on the student teams.
