Rethinking AFSA Supply Chain Strategy

AFSA is an industrial company that produces flexible packaging and has more than 200 plants on five continents. It has an important presence in South America with five plants in the region. Among its main features is to supply other industries (B2B) produce under the strategy make-to-order, with local, regional, and corporate hierarchies. Its value proposition is aimed at delivering superior customer service to the market with innovative and quality products. However, due to the acquisitions that the company has made in the last two years in different countries of the region and the growth in the consumption of flexible packaging, the strategies among the different areas of the company have not been aligned, creating incompatibilities between the strategies of the functional areas like sales, operations, finance, and supply chain. This chapter proposes to optimize the supply chain of AFSA, using a strategic methodology of diagnosis and operational analysis to have a multidimensional approach that allows for decision-making.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop exploratory propositions and a conceptual framework on the interaction between organisational structure (decision-making centralisation and internal coordination) and the relationship between supply chain fit and firm performance. Design/methodology/approach Through a case study, two corporate groups with distinctive organisational structures were examined; both are undergoing a critical moment of changes to their top management and are reshaping their corporate and supply chain strategies. Data on decision-making centralisation, internal coordination mechanisms, supply, demand and innovation uncertainties, and supply chain strategies were collected from key respondents. Findings The analysis conducted suggests the need to consider the joint interaction between organisational structure and supply chain fit in offsetting the implications of a potential misfit on firm performance. Furthermore, the context sensitivity of a supply chain is often overlooked, hence simply modifying supply chain strategy does not necessarily lead to a variation in firm performance. Practical implications This research is of particular importance to most organisations in the testing times of uncertainty in the global landscape. It guides supply chain practitioners to better understand which elements of the organisational structure interact with the uncertainty of supply, demand and innovation. Originality/value This paper is one of the first to investigate the interaction between elements of organisational structure and supply chain fit and identify decision-making centralisation and coordination as the internal uncertainty factors that are most relevant to supply chain fit research. A conceptual framework has been built for future testing, in which the organisational structure moderates the relationship between supply chain fit and firm performance.

The purpose of this study is to provide an analysis of global supply chain in a broader context that encompasses not only the producing company, but suppliers and customers.The theme of this study is to identify global sourcing and selling options, to enhance customer service and value added, to optimize inventory performance, to reduce total delivered costs and lead times, to achieve lower break-even costs, and to improve operational flexibility, customization and partner relations. In this context, an integrated management information system will be viewed as the key instrument that captures all relevant data and makes it available to the appropriate decision-maker and that provides an optimizer and decision-support function supporting various phases of the decision-making process, requiring the identification of cost cutting and value adding strategies. The properly integrated management information systems will help companies to gain the critical global competitive edge to survive in today's markets. We suggest various strategies in sourcing, manufacturing/operation, and marketing that can provide a competitive global supply chain strategy for a firm to increase value. We provide case studies where these strategies have been successful as well as case studies where they have failed.

In recent years, supply chains have become increasingly vulnerable to risks resulting in poor financial performance and customer service. Managing the supply chain risks is a challenging task. Resilience and responsiveness based strategies are being attempted to build a robust supply chain. To select the appropriate mitigation strategies, supply chain risks are to be prioritized. Supply chain risk prioritization is a Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) problem. MCDM models for supply chain risk prioritization needs attention. In this research, a hybrid Analytic Hierarch Process (AHP) and Preference Ranking Organization METHod for Enrichment Evaluation (PROMETHEE) approach is proposed for supply chain risk prioritization. A case example of a typical tractor industry is presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed approach.

COVID-19 has been perceived as a new menace to undertake business relations in the marketplace. Consequently, supply chains have been required to reevaluate how to manage their key functions to cope with harsh business environment under this pandemic outbreak scenario. Therefore, supply chain strategies have taken an essential role in achieving resilience, flexibility, responsiveness and sustainable operations. As a result, the introduction of new digital technologies has contributed to enhance organizational performance and to face COVID-19 challenges in global markets. The purpose of this chapter is to provide insights of current literature on supply chain operations by identifying strategic practices within this pandemic health outbreak crisis. The chapter introduces an overview of the supply chain key functional areas. Then, the discussion concentrates on describing a series of observations and empirical research developed by academics and experts on the topic. After that, supply chain strategic practices are analyzed, followed by a description of digital technology as a critical tool to achieve operational excellence and to compete in tougher market conditions. Finally, a conceptual model is proposed to ensure effective supply chain functioning and value creation across the entire firm’s operations. Conclusion are drawn to summarize the contribution of this chapter and to highlight the importance of rethinking new practices for achieving higher performance results. Future research suggestions are presented to advance the discussion and research in embracing new supply chain models under market uncertainty in terms of demand, supply and operations.

Most petrochemical companies are undergoing radical changes. The markets being served have expanded globally, customer service expectations have increased, and demand has become much more volatile and hence less predictable. The resulting product supply chains evolve/develop over time, with integrating decision-making processes and advanced planning practices becoming more prominent. A proactive approach with longer time horizons becomes the norm for excellence. Refinery expansion and highly integrated/sophisticated manufacturing technology have also contributed to increased interdependency within and between supply chains (upstream to feed sources, downstream to end consumer, and between logistics networks). These developments resulted in what is termed advance supply chain planning. Notwithstanding its unique differences, the petrochemical industry still has a lot of ground to cover before it can reach some of the advance supply chain planning benefits reported in other industries. This article presents what is believed to be an appropriate supply chain planning approach/framework for decision making in large-scale, integrated petrochemical companies.

Green supply chain management is a strategy which strengthens and integrates environmental consideration into whole supply chain. The green strategic supplier plays an important role in the implementation of green supply chain strategy. In the selection methodology of a strategic green supplier, some special requirements are needed which are different from the traditional supplier selection practices. In this paper, we combine the generalized weighted BM operator with Pythagorean 2-tuple linguistic numbers to propose the generalized Pythagorean 2-tuple linguistic-weighted Bonferroni mean operator, and then the multiple attribute decision-making methods are developed based on this operator. Finally, we use an example for green supplier selection to illustrate the multiple attribute decision-making process of the proposed methods.
