Interculturally Relevant Pedagogy

Although culturally responsive pedagogy has been geared towards students' cultures, interests, and needs, it does not meaningfully consider intercultural communication dynamics that are always existing in almost all classrooms, especially highly multicultural ones. This assumption is problematized by the current academic discussion on individuals' tendency to oscillate between different identities/cultures and the significance of intersubjectivity in the epistemological complexity of interculturality. This chapter makes a case for interculturally relevant pedagogy as an educational approach that recognizes the importance of considering students' cultures while emphasizing intercultural communication in K-12 classrooms procedures with the aim of simultaneously attaining social justice and scholastic achievement. It argues for the plausible need of integrating popular culture in order to present sociopolitical realities and accordingly enable students, along with teachers' guidance, to critically question the current power imbalances and the cultural hegemony of dominant group.

This phenomenological study examined the complexity American Indian K-12 school leaders face on reservations in Montana, USA The study described how these leaders have to reconcile their Westernized educational leadership training with their traditional ways of knowing, living, and leading. Three major themes emerged that enabled these leaders to address racism in their schools and create spaces that were more conducive to the practice of culturally responsive pedagogy. The study highlights how leaders reconcile cultural clashes and confront racism by using identity, relationality, and re-normed practices.

Set in Ontario, which is the most diverse province in Canada, this study (N = 76) examined Internationally Educated Teachers’ (IETs) and non-Internationally Educated Teachers’ (non-IETs) sense of self-efficacy for providing linguistically and culturally inclusive pedagogy in K-12 classrooms. Theories of self-efficacy and culturally responsive pedagogy frame this research. This study employed a quantitative 40-item survey to compare teachers’ self-efficacy perceptions of general pedagogy and culturally responsive pedagogy. Results show that while both groups were equally consistent in their self-efficacy perceptions for providing general pedagogy, IETs reported significantly higher self-efficacy for providing culturally responsive pedagogy. Réalisée en Ontario, la province la plus diversifiée du Canada, auprès d’enseignantes et enseignants formés à l’étranger (IETs) et d’enseignantes et enseignants formés ailleurs qu’à l’étranger (non-IETs), cette étude rend compte de la mesure dans laquelle ces professeurs se sentent personnellement capables d’offrir efficacement une pédagogie linguistiquement et culturellement inclusive dans les salles de classe de la maternelle à la douzième année. Éclairée par des recherches dans les domaines de l’auto-efficacité et de la pédagogie adaptée aux réalités culturelles, cette enquête quantitative basée sur la réponse à 40 questions a permis de comparer les perceptions d’auto-efficacité des enseignantes et enseignants à l’égard de la pédagogie en général et de la pédagogie adaptée aux réalités culturelles. Les résultats de l’enquête indiquent que, alors que les sentiments d’auto-efficacité des membres des deux groupes étaient uniformes quant à la pédagogie en général, les enseignantes et enseignants formés à l’étranger se sentent considérablement plus à même d’offrir une pédagogie adaptée aux réalités culturelles.

Drawing on culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) and the development of cultural competence, this study explores how teacher learners in a critical inquiry group narrated and discussed their urban field experiences, particularly in regard to equity-oriented literacy education. More specifically, this study demonstrates both the impact that deep-seated deficit perspectives had on how the teacher learners approached their work as educators and the tensions they felt between engaging in CRP and maintaining high standards. The article ends by offering a heuristic for “critical practice-based field experiences” as a way of contextualizing practice within school-based teacher learning.

Purpose: This paper is a thematic literature review to examine the current state of research about Culturally Responsive Pedagogy in mathematics. The main themes are students’ perception, teacher education for pre-service teacher and professional development for teachers. Research methods/ approach: Literature was collected from Eric, which is a research engine of the education field. Also, Google Scholar is used to find articles of major scholars introduced by Dr. Rich Milner, who is the instructor of this course. Findings: Students faced microaggressions in mathematics class, which discouraged them to learn mathematics. The effect of teacher education was inconsistent in terms of the awareness of culturally responsive pedagogy and lesson plans. Research of professional development mentioned that mathematics was cultural. Implications for research and practice: It is more interesting to conduct long term or follow-up research to find the teacher’s practice after a taking professional development program. Also, it is critical to expand research scope besides African American and Latino students. Finally, evidence-based research is needed to change the political situation. In the field of cultural heritage, three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of monuments is a usual activity for many professionals. The aim in this paper focuses on the new technology educational application combining science, history, and archaeology. Being involved in almost all stages of implementation steps and assessing the level of participation, university students use tools of computer gaming platform and participate in ways of planning the virtual environment which improves their education through e-Learning. The virtual 3D environment is made with different imaging methods (helium-filled balloon, Structure for motion, 3D repository models) and a developmental plan has been designed for use in many future applications. Digital tools were used with 3D reconstructed buildings from the museum archive to Unity 3D for the design. The pilot study of Information Technology work has been employed to introduce cultural heritage and archaeology to university syllabuses. It included students with a questionnaire which has been evaluated accordingly. As a result, the university students were inspired to immerse themselves into the virtual lab, aiming to increasing the level of interaction. The results show a satisfactory learning outcome by an easy to use and real 3D environment, a step forward to fill in needs of contemporary online sustainable learning demands.

Culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) which provides a general framework for working with culturally and linguistically diverse learners has become the reality in the contemporary elementary classroom in Canada and around the world. This theory-to-practice article presents five research-based teaching practices which make a tangible impact on students’ academic vocabulary learning, their academic literacy, and longitudinal educational success. The author illustrates how this vocabulary can be identified, clustered, and contextualized within the frame of a thematic unit. The reader is invited to a classroom in Quebec via a video clip of a dual-language book project that illustrates how principles and practices of CRP can be applied in an FSL setting. La pédagogie sensible à la culture, fournissant un cadre de travail général quand on travaille avec des apprenants de cultures et de langues diverses, est devenue une réalité dans la salle de classe élémentaire contemporaine au Canada et dans le monde entier. Le présent article, de mise en pratique de la théorie, présente cinq pratiques d’enseignement fondées sur la recherche qui ont un impact tangible sur l’apprentissage du vocabulaire scolaire des élèves, sur leur littératie scolaire et sur leur réussite scolaire à long terme. L’auteur illustre comment on peut identifier ce vocabulaire, le regrouper et le contextualiser dans le cadre d’une unité thématique. Le lecteur est invité dans une salle de classe au Québec grâce à un clip vidéo qui montre un projet de lecture bilingue illustrant comment les principes et les pratiques de la pédagogie qui prend en compte les réalités culturelles peuvent être appliqués dans un contexte de français langue seconde.

English as an Additional Language (EAL) students are increasingly taught by non-specialist, mainstream teachers. This trend calls for a reconceptualization of teacher education to explicitly and purposefully include linguistically and culturally responsive pedagogy in their curriculum. In the United States, several frameworks have been proposed to address this need, although much still needs to be learned about actual practice in preservice teacher preparation programs. In this article, I caution against the monolingual bias in preservice teacher preparation and argue for the mandate for developing a multilingual stance for all teachers of EAL students.

<p>This study explored a contemporary counternarrative of Drama Club, a transformative culture of teaching and learning for disenfranchised Black youth who had been systematically funneled out of classrooms and into the school-to-prison pipeline.  Auto/biographical and auto/ethnographical data were collected and assembled as a metaphor of the teachers’ and students’ experiences in Drama Club and their understanding of the teaching and learning process and of themselves within it.  The collective story of Drama Club was analyzed through the lens of culturally responsive pedagogy theory and critical race theory in education.  Implications for future research and teacher education that set out to impact disenfranchised students are included.</p>
