In this essay, the author argues that no person can just step into self-directed learning without a mentor who guides students into learning. Learning is an unending relational process, based on trust, that begins in wonder. The chapter examines arguments from Plato, Polanyi, Pieper, and others who contend that learning is other-centered rather than self-directed, and as such, learning demands the need for guides—either as individuals, books, or sets of “guiding questions” that push us to grasp a larger, systemic view of the world.

ABSTRACT This article describes a project-based course titled “International Relations and Games” in which students were required to create game rules and scenarios using IR concepts, theories, approaches, and topics. Although students learned through participation in games and simulations in previous classes, they acquired further knowledge by developing their own games—a case of “learning by creating.” The course was designed with expectations that (1) game-creation activities would facilitate peer-based and self-directed learning; (2) it would help improve students’ creativity; and (3) it would enable students to understand the importance and utility of discipline in the world beyond their classroom. Students conducted three game-creation projects in the semester. Based on the instructor’s observations, student surveys, and personal-interview results, it is concluded that all three expectations were met—especially that students felt as if they were leading the class.

New Perspective

The present article sheds light on new representations of learning. The proposition deals with a representation of learning in four dimensions, in which the highlight is on the navigation across space as a new perspective on the phenomenon of learning. This perspective allows for some aspects of the phenomenon and attempts to show experimental proposals on the matter. Three of the dimensions are based on learning theories: Vigotsky’s Meaningful learning; Piaget’s self-directed learning through discovery; and Vigotsky’s Social Learning. A fourth dimension would be the physical space itself. Animals navigate in different ways through the world. Navigation: the process of being in this world is the basis of learning.

Industrial Revolution 4.0 is changing how we live, work, and communicate. The education field should develop to adapt to the revolutionary changes that happen in the world recently. Industrial revolution 4.0 makes shifted paradigm in education. Education 4.0 is the desired approach to learning that aligns itself with the emerging fourth industrial revolution. It brings up the well-known educational concepts such as self-directed learning and long-life learning. This paper discuss shifting educational theory in Education 4.0 and the phenomenon of the emerging new education technology which attempts to fill the need for self-directed learning dan long-life learning.

Because it was difficult to find information during the last century, it was significant to raise individuals who acquired, learned, and memorized it and had basic level skills. Currently in our world, memorizing information has lost its significance. Thanks to the technological developments, reaching the desired information has become extremely easy. Therefore, what is being expected from the individuals today is to question the accuracy of the information they reached, to produce new information from the one in hand, and to realize the change and transformation with the information they acquired by the help of self-directed learning skills. Nowadays, the changes occurring in technology and information every single day have made lifelong learning and in this direction self- directed learning important, which is one of the basic elements of it. The societies that bring up individuals who assume their own responsibility by seizing the transformation in education and execute the necessities of it have a voice around the world and direct the future.
