Student Voices on the Use of International Telecollaboration and Sustainability During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has thrown up many challenges to international cooperation, to the promotion of sustainable development, and indeed, to education. This chapter describes a telecollaborative project between university students in Japan and China. The students planned, wrote, recorded, and produced video podcasts on the theme of sustainable development, which were then exchanged via a password-protected, online, collaborative platform. On completion of the project, students wrote reflective essays, which are used here to gain insights into their impressions of topics such as sustainable development and telecollaboration. Results indicate that students improved their understanding of sustainability in addition to developing video editing and podcasting production skills. They also improved their pronunciation as well as other English skills. Overall, they were proud of their podcasts and enjoyed collaborating online with students from another country.

The study of the affective dimension of transversal competences is essential for the development of responsible behaviors and maintaining attitudes committed to sustainable development. The importance attributed to each of these factors can predict behavior implementation and awareness of values for sustainable development that reflect the acquisition and internalization of sustainability-related generic competences. This study aimed to determine the psychometric properties of the affective dimension of the Generic Macro-Competence Assessment (AGMA) scale by applying Rasch measurement model to a sample of Spanish university students, comprising 387 Spanish university students (74.9% women; mean age = 21.24; WD = 3.54; range: 17–34). Results demonstrated a lack of adjustment to the Rasch model due to item 1, and all items showed disordered response category thresholds. The remaining nine-item scale achieved all requirements of the model (χ2 = 61.46; p = 0.052), including unidimensionality. Thus, the scale’s psychometric properties indicate an easy-to-apply instrument for screening these factors for coping strategies in undergraduate and graduate Spanish students. The results can help in justifying the design of interdisciplinary intervention programs, in which affective factors are essential for sustainable development education.

Background: This article examines the phenomenon of academic integrity during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, with particular reference to emergency online assessments in 2020.Aim: It explores academic dishonesty, cheating and plagiarism of university students during emergency remote online assessment, from the perspective of South African students.Setting and Methodology: The authors explore the approaches of different universities worldwide, as well as the extant literature on the topic. An examination of the current literature related explicitly to the COVID-19 online assessments reveals a dearth of engagement by researchers in the South African context. In order to address this lacuna, the authors rely on data generated from an institutional forum on academic dishonesty at a University in South Africa. It focuses specifically on the voices of students presented during the forum, which explained both why students are dishonest and ways to curb dishonesty.Results and Conclusion: The data generated show whilst some students were dishonest due to pandemic-related issues (like lack of monitoring), there are also other reasons, such as lack of time management, feeling overwhelmed and stressed and struggling with technology that contributes to student dishonesty. Students suggest that assessments be approached differently online to curb academic dishonesty. The paper concludes by providing some fundamental changes needed to address academic dishonesty.

This paper mainly investigates the perception and knowledge on climate change of the university students in Bangladesh. To carry out this study, primary data are collected from 370 students and uses several statistical methods. Perception and knowledge on the causes, effects and mitigation ways of climate change problems, and perceived duties to combat against climate change are analyzed with descriptive statistics. This paper finds that deforestation is the main cause of global warming and climate change and, the effects of climate change is very serious on people’s health. Majority portion of the students think that it is difficult to combat against climate change problem because it has already been too late to take action. Besides this study also finds that government is crucially responsible for combating against climate change problem. The study calls for government mainly besides industry and youths to aware people about the causes, effects, mitigation ways of climate change so that they can contribute to the sustainable development by mitigating climate change problem.

This article is devoted to investigation of the forming and the initial stage of functioning of the UN’s Technology Facilitation Mechanism in the context of exploring new trends of international innovation, scientific and technological cooperation in interests of Sustainable development and achieving its aims. The study goal is a elaborating the conceptual model of given Mechanism in the light of tasks, enshrined in the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and addressed to the Global partnership in the interest of sustainable development as regards development of environmentally sound technologies, knowledge and innovation and other sustainable technologies.The methodology of research conducted consists of the general scientific methods of analysis and synthesis, generalization and abstracting. The author have used the system principle and the historical principle. The empirical basis of analysis concludes provisions of international documents in the area of sustainable development, UNs’ documents and documents, stipulating the Mechanism activity.As results of given study are following: the proof of hypothesis that Mechanism is a key institutional innovation of global policy in respective area of international cooperation; explicating the specificity of its political and legal foundations; indicating its stakeholders; indicating its structure; pointing its priority directions of activity. The conclusions drawn are conceptual provisions that, firstly, Mechanism really has a potential for consolidating and broadening the scope of international cooperation and also increasing the coordination between stakeholders by means of elimination of fragmentation and gaps that should lead to cumulative effect. Secondly, Mechanism is designed to focus attention on facilitating overcoming various barriers, such as trade, investment and financial, of development and transfer of technologies and knowledge that should lead to a conjugating the scientific and technological progress, on the one hand, and the sustainable development, on the other hand.

Following the entry into force of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, China has rapidly established key areas and priorities for its implementation, and Goal 14 focusing on sustainable marine development (hereinafter referred to as “SDG 14”) has been attached with great importance. This paper illustrates China’s implementation of SDG14 from four aspects: marine pollution control, conservation of marine environment, sustainable utilization of marine resources and international cooperation in global governance, and concludes that SDG14 has been implemented well on the whole in China. On this basis, the paper looks to the future sustainable development of ocean in China, and suggests improving the legal system, strengthening marine environmental monitoring, and advancing international cooperation for ocean sustainable development.
