Video editing is a high-required job, for it requires skilled artists or workers equipped with plentiful physical strength and multidisciplinary knowledge, such as cinematography, aesthetics. Thus gradually, more and more researches focus on proposing semi-automatical and even fully automatical solutions to reduce workloads. Since those conventional methods are usually designed to follow some simple guidelines, they lack flexibility and capability to learn complex ones. Fortunately, the advances of computer vision and machine learning make up the shortages of traditional approaches and make AI editing feasible. There is no survey to conclude those emerging researches yet. This paper summaries the development history of automatic video editing, and especially the applications of AI in partial and full workflows. We emphasizes video editing and discuss related works from multiple aspects: modality, type of input videos, methology, optimization, dataset, and evaluation metric. Besides, we also summarize the progresses in image editing domain, i.e., style transferring, retargeting, and colorization, and seek for the possibility to transfer those techniques to video domain. Finally, we give a brief conclusion about this survey and explore some open problems.

The COVID-19 pandemic has thrown up many challenges to international cooperation, to the promotion of sustainable development, and indeed, to education. This chapter describes a telecollaborative project between university students in Japan and China. The students planned, wrote, recorded, and produced video podcasts on the theme of sustainable development, which were then exchanged via a password-protected, online, collaborative platform. On completion of the project, students wrote reflective essays, which are used here to gain insights into their impressions of topics such as sustainable development and telecollaboration. Results indicate that students improved their understanding of sustainability in addition to developing video editing and podcasting production skills. They also improved their pronunciation as well as other English skills. Overall, they were proud of their podcasts and enjoyed collaborating online with students from another country.

AbstractRobot-based automation is still not widespread in small and medium-sized enterprises, since programming industrial robots is usually costly and only feasible by experts. This disadvantages can be resolved by using intuitive robot programming approaches like playback programming. At the same time, there are currently not automatized automatized, like fiber spraying. We present a novel approach in programming a robot system for fiber spraying processes, which extends a playback programming framework inspired by video editing concepts. The resulting framework allows the programming of also the periphery devices needed for the fiber spraying process. We evaluated the resulting programming framework to measure the intuitiveness in the use and show that the framework is not only able to program fiber spraying tasks but is also rather intuitive to use for domain experts.

Mobile phones and the Internet combined have led to the creation of applications that allow their users to perform music using only their Smartphones. With the Smule applications that we analyze in this paper, people can sing karaoke together with other singers from all over the world, or play a tune with their fingertips tapping on a phone’s screen. Besides providing new entertainment activities, the Smule applications and their multiple options regarding audio and video editing can bring about new musical practices and musical artifacts. Smule users can sing duets remotely, without actually singing on the same time – a virtual collective performance. Singing karaoke becomes a solitary practice where togetherness is contrived but not achieved. Video recordings can be edited and shared on a built-in social network, thus being endorsed with a new function: to create bonds within a social network. Analyzing the discourses of Smule creators and developers, we also show that the applications do not achieve what they are promised to do, namely providing social and authentic practices.

In the era of rapid growth of technologies, image matting plays a key role in image and video editing along with image composition. In many significant real-world applications such as film production, it has been widely used for visual effects, virtual zoom, image translation, image editing and video editing. With recent advancements in digital cameras, both professionals and consumers have become increasingly involved in matting techniques to facilitate image editing activities. Image matting plays an important role to estimate alpha matte in the unknown region to distinguish foreground from the background region of an image using an input image and the corresponding trimap of an image which represents a foreground and unknown region. Numerous image matting techniques have been proposed recently to extract high-quality matte from image and video sequences. This paper illustrates a systematic overview of the current image and video matting techniques mostly emphasis on the current and advanced algorithms proposed recently. In general, image matting techniques have been categorized according to their underlying approaches, namely, sampling-based, propagation-based, combination of sampling and propagation-based and deep learning-based algorithms. The traditional image matting algorithms depend primarily on color information to predict alpha matte such as sampling-based, propagation-based or combination of sampling and propagation-based algorithms. However, these techniques mostly use low-level features and suffer from high-level background which tends to produce unwanted artifacts when color is same or semi-transparent in the foreground object. Image matting techniques based on deep learning have recently introduced to address the shortcomings of traditional algorithms. Rather than simply depending on the color information, it uses deep learning mechanism to estimate the alpha matte using an input image and the trimap of an image. A comprehensive survey on recent image matting algorithms and in-depth comparative analysis of these algorithms has been thoroughly discussed in this paper.
