A computation software on diffusion computation in solids was developed. The software includes two sub-modules of “database management system (DBMS)” and "Evaluation & prediction". The “DBMS” deals with the diffusion coefficients gathered from reported documents and the data evaluated according to some rules, besides, it can provide users with retrieval of diffusion coefficients. Based on the solutions to the Fick’s first law and the Fick’s second law in the four typical critical conditions, the "Evaluation & prediction" sub-module gives the predication of concentration distribution after diffusion process in solids or computation for diffusion coefficient.

The main subject of the paper is deriving appropriate relationships to calculate the horizontal turbulent diffusion coefficient, the size of the far-field polluted plume and the concentration distribution in the case of the continuous steady state wastewater discharge into receiving marine environment. The simplified advection diffusion-diffusion equation with variable (depending on the distance from the outfalls) coefficients of turbulent diffusion has been solved for this purpose.

This article reports a comparative study of experimental results obtained during the drying of Castilla-variety coffee beans from Santander, Colombia. They were performed by two means: thermal and electromagnetic radiation. Twenty experiments were carried out, ten tests in a microwave cavity at 2,450 MHz-1,080W, and ten tests using a conventional electric oven with temperature controlled at 50±2oC. Experiments were made using samples of coffee beans with parchment, without parchment, and of the only-parchment. For each sample, dimensionless moisture ratio and diffusion coefficients were determined, according to the second law of Fick. We found that the diffusion coefficient of the samples dried in a microwave cavity was twenty-two times higher than the diffusion coefficient of samples dried with thermal radiation. Likewise, it was observed that samples in conventional oven showed a uniform temperature, in contrast with those heated by microwave radiation. Such results are useful for designing hybrid systems for drying coffee beans.

ABSTRACTMultiple cations interdiffusion in In0.53Ga0.47As/In0.52Al0.48As quantum well (QW) structure is investigated by using the model of expanded form of Fick's second law. The model is fitted to the measured concentration data in order to determine their diffusion coefficients. Once the concentration distribution is obtained, the types of strain and their variation across the QW can be determined, thus the subbands and transitions can be gathered. Result shows interesting phenomena due to this three species interdiffusion.

The diffusion process in hcp Zr with low amounts of Fe being in solution or forming very dilute Zr-Fe alloys is analysed and discussed. The enhancement of the diffusion coefficient in alloys with increasing amounts of Fe is studied using both experimental and theoretical results. In contraposition with the assumption made in the literature that the Fe in solution in the hcp Zr lattice is the responsible, this enhancement seems to be more related with the total amount of Fe present in the samples. This idea is supported by measurements of Au diffusion in Zr with 50 to 150 gr/gr of Fe which shows increments in the diffusion coefficients even at the lower temperatures where the reported Fe solubility in -Zr is negligible. Ab initio calculations using SIESTA and WIEN2k codes show several stable and meta-stable configurations for the Fe in the hcp Zr lattice in interstitial and off-centre positions, resembling the last ones a Zr3Fe like arrangement. These configurations are used in order to analyze the mechanism of both, self-diffusion enhancement and ultra-fast diffusion of Fe in -Zr.

AbstractAn object-oriented medical database management system is presented for a typical cardiologic center, facilitating epidemiological trials. Object-oriented analysis and design were used for the system design, offering advantages for the integrity and extendibility of medical information systems. The system was developed using object-oriented design and programming methodology, the C++ language and the Borland Paradox Relational Data Base Management System on an MS-Windows NT environment. Particular attention was paid to system compatibility, portability, the ease of use, and the suitable design of the patient record so as to support the decisions of medical personnel in cardiovascular centers. The system was designed to accept complex, heterogeneous, distributed data in various formats and from different kinds of examinations such as Holter, Doppler and electrocardiography.
