Stepped spillways are frequently limited to specific discharges under around 30 m2/s due to concerns about potential cavitation damages. A small air concentration can prevent such damages and the design of bottom aerators is well established for smooth chutes. The purpose of this study is to systematically investigate the performance of a deflector aerator at the beginning of stepped chutes. Six parameters (chute angle, step height, approach flow depth, approach flow Froude number, deflector angle and deflector height) are varied in a physical model. The spatial air concentration distribution downstream of the aerator, the cavity sub-pressure, water discharge and air discharges are measured. The results describe the commonly used air entrainment coefficient, the jet length, as well as the average and bottom air concentration development to design an aerator. The lowest bottom air concentration measured in all tests is higher than the air concentration recommended in literature to protect against cavitation damages. And, unlike smooth chutes, there appears to be no significant air detrainment downstream of the jet impact. One deflector aerator seems therefore sufficient to provide protection of a stepped spillway.

Summary The leaching of a salt cavern will trigger a series of rock-fluid interactions, including salt rock dissolution, cavity expansion, and brine transport caused by convection, turbulence, and diffusion effects. These interactions have influences on one another. The primary objectives of this study include developing a 3D multiphysical coupled model for horizontal salt cavern leaching and quantifying these interactions. The species transport equation and standard κ-ε equation were combined to describe the brine transport dynamics within the cavity. Based on the velocity and concentration distribution characteristics predicted, the interface movement equation implemented with mesh deformation techniques was applied to describe the cavity expansion. Next, the Volgograd cavern monitored data were collected for model validation. The predicted results are consistent with the field data. The average relative errors are 11.0% for brine displacing concentration and 4.5% for cavity volume. The results suggest that the cavity can be divided into three regions, including the main flow region, circulation region, and reflux region. The results also suggest that the brine concentration distribution is relatively uniform. With the dissolution threshold angle and anisotropic dissolution rates considered, the resultant cavity cross section is crown top and cone bottom. The results also show that the cavity can be divided into dissolution and erosion sections according to its position relative to the injection point.

The Gaussian solution of the diffusion equation for line source is used to have the first four moments of the vertical concentration distribution (centroid, variance, skewness, and kurtosis). The magnitude and position of maximum concentration level were evaluated. Also the plume advection wind speed is estimated. Equations for the ground level concentration were compared with wind tunnel measurements.

An innovative axial hydrocyclone separator was designed in which a guide vane was installed to replace a conventional tangential inlet, potentially aggravating inlet turbulence. The characteristics of velocity distribution, concentration distribution, and pressure distribution inside the separator were obtained through the numerical simulation of the turbulent flow of oil and water. The results showed that the flow field presented good symmetry, which eliminated the eccentric turbulence phenomenon in the conventional hydrocyclone separators and was beneficial for the oil–water separation.
