In this paper, solar thermal utilization methods in hospitals, schools, hotels and factories in a typical Southern China city, e.g., Dongguan City, were investigated, which lead to the understanding of the heating methods in different types of buildings and the application ratio of different kinds of renewable heating systems, e.g., solar water heater, in all kinds of buildings. These will help reveal the usage of renewable energy for heating and its development in this region of China.

This paper presents results of an assessment of several solar water units to determine causes of their malfunctioning. A survey of solar water heater (SWH) installations in the Gaborone area, Botswana was carried out to obtain performance characteristics of SWH in the local market. Extensive inspections were performed on both in-service and non-functioning units, problems were diagnosed and pragmatic solutions were proffered. The paper presents some of the discoveries made during the investigation, namely, several units did not last up to the payback period of say 10 to 15 years. The results obtained could provide guidance in selecting operating criteria and suitable system design for solar water heating applications.

The solar water heater is a method of utilizing solar thermal energy by storing heat energy in water which can be used directly. Solar thermal energy has a high utility potential. It has a power of 1 kW/m2 on average on the surface of the earth with energy up to 7 kWh/m2/day on average per year. One of the uses of the solar water heater is that it can be implemented in the milk pasteurization system. The research equipment consists of an accumulator vessel with an area of 2x2 m2 and a water pipe collector. The water that had been heated in an accumulator (thermos) was used directly as the heating source in the milk pasteurization process. Meanwhile, the most common heating method used in the pasteurization process is electricity and gas energy. The result showed that using 82oC of accumulator water, it took 12 minutes (14.48–15.00) to reach the milk temperature needed in the pasteurization process which is 70oC for 6.75 litres of milk. The efficiency of solar heat energy absorption by an accumulator is 47%. This value can be increased by increasing the volume of water.

The increasing number of non-renewable energy and the rising need of energy caused some global issue. We always interested to discuss how human being could create and improve an instrument that can extract energy from renewable energy resources, which is clean and applicable. One instrument that can extract energy from the sun is solar water heater. Solar water heater, consist of two main components. The first one is storage tank, and the other is solar collector. The purpose of this research is to design, manufacture, determine the performance of the solar collector with vacuum tubes and dual heat pipe based on the wick length variation. This experiment used a 150 Watt halogen lamp as the simulator of the sun. A copper fin was utilized to collect heat from the sun and transfer the heat to heat pipes. Adiabatic walls made from Styrofoam and plywood were set to prevent heat transfer to the environment due temperature difference. The performance of the heat pipe was investigated based on the wick length inside the heat pipe. The flow characteristic inside of the heat pipe and the thermal resistance depend on the wick length. The study found that the full-length wick heat pipe has the best performance with 0.37 K/W thermal resistance, and the efficiency of the system reach 34.95%. This is the highest value compared to the half-length and three-quarter length wick heat pipe.

Hospitality is a relatively large energy user in the tourism sector. The application of renewable energy in this field will certainly save energy and contribute to reduce the effect of global warming. An interesting application to study is the use of solar energy for preparing hot water in hotel. This study is a literature study that explored research articles on solar water heater, especially used in hospitality, that have been published. Studies on solar energy have always increased over the past five years, 66.2% of which were in the field of solar thermal energy, where 11.2% of solar thermal energy researches were related to the use of solar energy for the process of heating water. For the research originating from Indonesia, the figures are 48.7% and 6.6% respectively. There is no research on the use of solar water heater in Indonesia. Research on tourism in Indonesia itself tends to decline. A simple example of simulation about solar water heating system using TRNSYS 18 simulation program was presented to motivate researchers in this field.

Aiming at the problems of water temperature and water level control system of conventional solar water heater and low solar thermal control efficiency, this paper developed an AT series single-chip solar water heater control system for rural areas. In this paper, the detailed design of hardware and software is presented, and the method of evaluating the collector efficiency is simplified by the temperature rise rate and solar irradiance of the collector plate. The software compensation algorithm we adopted can effectively reduce the impact of different water quality on water level measurement and improve solar thermal control efficiency. It is found that the control system designed in this paper has the characteristics of low cost, high safety, and strong practicability.
