Abstract Multi-spool compression systems are characterized by two or more compressor stages running at different rotational speeds. The response of an individual component can be different from an integrated system. Limiting operating conditions such as choke and stall points could have substantially different effects. The present paper explores the interactions and coupling significance between different stages of a multi-spool compression system. Further, an attempt is made by modifying the shape of the inter-compressor duct (ICD) to improve the system performance. The multi-spool system in this study comprises of the NASA stage 67 as the fan followed by in-house core and bypass ducts and a single stage booster. It is observed that the flow pattern in an ICD is entirely different in stand-alone modeling than in the integrated system modeling, owing to fan wakes and booster upstream influences. The booster performance is dependent on the duct exit flow pattern. The shape of the baseline ICD is tailored to reduce extra losses which is generated due to reduction in the length of the ICD and hence making the system more compact. It is shown that the shape tailoring optimization of ICD done independently result in a significant improvement in the duct exit flow pattern and hence an improvement in the booster performance. However, this gain in the performance is reduced to marginal values for an integrated system. This happens due to a strong coupling of the ICD flow pattern with the fan wakes and highly three dimensional nature of the ICD flow pattern. Therefore, it is found that component level optimization may not give rise to an equivalent system-level improvement.

There are many PE(Pre-Erection) Blocks in open areas of the shipyard, which are supported by the wooden, concrete, or steel supports. Their position and numbers are decided on a basis of the workers’ experiences. Recently, many shipyards have been making PE blocks with various shape and weight distribution because of the variety of kinds of ships and their building technology. Seriously, they are treating blocks which have not been experienced. In order to evaluate the reliability of all support plans of PE Blocks in such situation, many man hours (MH) are consumed, and the special knowledge and technology about structural analysis are required. We proposed how to conveniently and quickly evaluate the structural safety on PE block supports and developed an application system to implement the evaluation process with three dimensional part models of the PE block and their weight information. The evaluation is based on the simplification to a grillage model of a PE block and its grillage analysis. The load distribution on the grillage model is calculated by two approaches. The first is that the load distribution on the grillage nodes are estimated with the real weight and the center of gravity of each part of a PE block, which can be provided from design databases of the shipyard. The other is that the load distribution is optimally estimated only with the weight and the center of gravity of sub blocks of a PE block. The latter is useful in the case that block information of mother ships can be obtained without the detail design of the PE block. The integrated system has been comprehensively implemented in order to make the grillage model from the three dimensional CAD models of the PE block and their weight information, and to perform the grillage analysis for the reaction forces on the block supports. In the application program, the grillage model can be automatically built from CAD models of PE block. Also the grillage can be modified by inserting, splitting, and deleting a beam element.

An approach for vehicle conflict analysis based on three-dimensional (3-D) vehicle detection is presented. Techniques for quantitative conflict measurements often use a point trajectory representation for vehicles. More accurate conflict measurement can be facilitated with a region-based vehicle representation instead. This paper describes a computer vision approach for extracting vehicle trajectories from video sequences. The method relied on a fusion of background subtraction and feature-based tracking to provide a three-dimensional (3-D) cuboid representation of the vehicle. Standard conflict measures, including time to collision and postencroachment time, were computed with the use of the 3-D cuboid vehicle representations. The use of these conflict measures was demonstrated on a challenging data set of video footage. Results showed that the region-based representation could provide more precise calculation of traffic conflict indicators compared with approaches based on a point representation.

In order to study the bubble morphology, a novel experimental and numerical approach was implemented in this research focusing on the analysis of a transparent throttle valve made by Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) material. A feature-based algorithm was written using the MATLAB software, allowing the 2D detection and three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of bubbles: collapsing and clustered ones. The valve core, being an important part of the throttle valve, was exposed to cavitation; hence, to distinguish it from the captured frames, the faster region-based convolutional neural network (R-CNN) algorithm was used to detect its morphology. Additionally, the main approach grouping the above listed techniques was implemented using an optimized virtual stereo vision arrangement of one camera and five plane mirrors. The results obtained during this study validated the robust algorithms and optimization applied.

Purpose This paper aims to propose an intelligent system that serves as a cost estimator when new part orders are received from customers. Design/methodology/approach The methodologies applied in this study were case-based reasoning (CBR), analytic hierarchy process, rule-based reasoning and fuzzy set theory for case retrieval. The retrieved cases were revised using parametric and feature-based cost estimation techniques. Cases were represented using an object-oriented (OO) approach to characterize them in n-dimensional Euclidean vector space. Findings The proposed cost estimator retrieves historical cases that have the most similar cost estimates to the current new orders. Further, it revises the retrieved cost estimates based on attribute differences between new and retrieved cases using parametric and feature-based cost estimation techniques. Research limitations/implications The proposed system was illustrated using a numerical example by considering different lathe machine operations in a computer-based laboratory environment; however, its applicability was not validated in industrial situations. Originality/value Different intelligent methods were proposed in the past; however, the combination of fuzzy CBR, parametric and feature-oriented methods was not addressed in product cost estimation problems.
