Based on the characteristics of power cables, an intelligent online monitoring system is constructed for failure detection and positioning. The implementation idea is illustrated and the main functions of the system are introduced in this paper. When power cable is destroyed or stolen, the system will send warning messages to alert the power management department. The actual applications show that the system has the advantages of convenience, low cost and high reliability.

An online monitoring system of main insulation and outer sheath of power cable is designed in this paper. The system can monitor the insulation of the power cable without change the normal power cable wiring and grid structure. Changes of the main insulation and outer sheath of power cable can be monitor and recorded. Alarm of given when the insulation of the power cable is abnormal. System managers arrange outage maintenance depends on the status of the power cable.

Thefaults in the underground cables cause to generatetransients which propagate along the power cable as travelling waves. The velocity of the generated travelling wave and the time taken by a wave to reach the source point from the fault location enables us to calculate the fault distance value. In this paper a double endedtravelling wave based approach is used and a communication channel is designed to calculate the fault distance. A circuit-based model is developed in the EMTP-RV software to find out the fault distance from the source end for all types of faults. Further it is proved that the fault distance is unaffected by the change in ground resistance, various types of faults and the fault inception angle in the proposed method

In recent years, Brushless DC (BLDC) motors have been gaining popularity as a solution for providing mechanical power, starting from low cost mobility solutions like the electric bikes, to high performance and high reliability aeronautical Electro-Mechanical Actuator (EMA). In this framework, the availability of fault detection tools suited to these types of machines appears necessary. There is already a vast literature on this topic, but only a small percentage of the proposed techniques have been developed to a sufficiently high Technology Readiness Level (TRL) to be implementable in industrial applications. The investigation on the state of the art carried out during the first phase of the present work, tried to collect the techniques which are closest to possible implementation. To fill a gap identified in the current techniques, a partial demagnetisation detection method is proposed in this paper. This technique takes advantage of the asymmetries generated in the current by the missing magnetic flux to detect the failure. Simulations and laboratory experiments have been carried out to validate the idea, showing the potential and the easy implementation of the method. The results have been examined in detail and satisfactory conclusions have been drawn.

This chapter deals with many special features of underground power cables. Important points are presented in this chapter. In this chapter the various components of the different underground cables used in transmission and distribution of electric energy are explained. The materials used in the manufacture of these cables are given in details. This chapter also contains the different types of cable joints and terminations.

In the perspective of realizing the on-line monitoring of power cable insulation, to analyze the changes of the traveling wave when the cable fault, thus we can found the power cable failures in advance and deal with it timely in order to make sure the safety and stability of power cables. Owing to high reliability, small size, strong anti-interference ability and application to cruel industrial environments of PLC, on-line monitoring system based on PLC has good resistance to interference of electric and magnetic and good stability.
