In Duckler’s account of Michael Heizer’s Double Negative, the viewer becomes a part of the overall experience of scale, of site, and the knowledge of place. In a sense, perception, feeling, and scale hold a very complex relationship in the eye of the participant, and this brings Heizer’s earthwork closer to architecture than one might expect. This correlation between experience, scale perception, and placemaking can enrich the educational experience, thereby affecting the balance of forces that exist between academia, practice, and research. At least, that is the hunch that drew us to the 2019 Antwerp ACSA/EAAE International Teacher Conference. By discussing how a blend-ed set of practices (practice/teaching/research) enabled a mutually reinforcing dialog between the making of ideas, buildings, and landscapes, this paper will present design practice and the practice of design education as inter-related activities. Through our collaborative efforts, we have worked to make the space of inquiry a continuous field that reaches across conventional divisions between the academy and practice. Within this field, research helps ground “the hunch” while “the hunch” tempers the formality of research. Our hunch is this: that a case study of a recent design think-tank will illustrate how we see:• expertise developed in the academic environment can be incorporated into an inquisitive professional design practice;• the studio (both academic and professional) as a thinker space that should not follow a commercial agenda nor should it become a space absent of craft and speculation, urge and fascination, skill and imagination, criticality and creativity, individual formation and social consciousness.

Knowledge base of milling feature machining based on relational database is proposed, using knowledge representation of production rules, according to the characteristics of feature machining knowledge. Tool selected reasoning mechanism and reasoning processes is presented basing the installed CNC milling tool database , and further reasoning is based on knowledge, milling tool selection method is implemented based on feature machining knowledge using the forward direction inference strategy .In the paper, a complete system of the selecting milling cutter is established. The system connects not only the theoretical knowledge but the expert’s experiences with the computer applications in order to provide a base of realizing the automatic mechanical processing. By the example of machining tool selection for complex surface, the selection process is described, and the system can select the tools to meet the processing requirements within a shot time, and has good versatility.

In practice, movable blocks with oppositely arranged cutting inserts are used for turning internal and external cylindrical surfaces with great length. With these instruments, the dimension of dynamic adjustment is formed as a result of the continuous striving to the dynamic equilibrium of the radial components of both operation cutting forces which is restricted in the systems of the tool and the work piece. In this processing scheme, it is particularly important that the opposite cutting edges lie in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the work piece, which is difficult for implementation in certain circumstances. In addition, under certain circumstances, the variation of the machining allowance has an impact on the size of the dynamic adjustment. It leads to reduction of the diameter of the treated surface towards the dimension of the static adjustment of the block. This article proposes an innovative solution for using tools with opposite cutting inserts, which are axially displaced with guaranteed value to increase the accuracy of the obtained size. The question of adjusting the elasticity of the cutting block to compensate for the effect of the variable allowance on the accuracy of the treatment is investigated. As the result of researching, the dependencies to quantify from this impact and the conditions for its reduction are received, which can be used in practical conditions for increasing accuracy of the static adjustment.
