In order to realize high efficiency and flexible manufacturing for rotary surfaces, efficient spinning technology (EST) is researched. It is the combination of multi-point forming and traditional spinning. Principle of EST is described, traditional spinning method is compared with it, and characteristics of it are analyzed. Finite element analysis (FEA) model of disc-shape part is established, EST process is analyzed, equivalent stress and plastic strain distributions are analyzed. EST equipment is developed, and the experiments are made. Results indicate: EST process consists of four stages; equivalent stress in sheet metal’s center region and bendable rollers active region exceeds yield stress, and plastic deformation is generated; experimental result accords with simulation result. Feasibility of EST is validated by simulation and experimental results.

Abstract Because the structural integrity of brake systems and tires can be related to the temperature, this work proposes a transient heat transfer finite element analysis (FEA) model to study the overheating in drum brake systems used in trucks and urban buses. To understand the mechanics of overheating, some constructive variants have been modeled regarding the assemblage: brake, rims, and tires. The model simultaneously studies the thermal energy generated by brakes and tires and how the heat is transferred and dissipated by conduction, convection, and radiation. The simulated FEA data and the experimental temperature profiles measured with thermocouples have been compared giving good correlation.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to realize the lightweight of connecting rod and meet the requirements of low energy consumption and vibration. Based on the structural design of the original connecting rod, the finite element analysis was conducted to reduce the weight and increase the natural frequencies, so as to reduce materials consumption and improve the energy efficiency of internal combustion engine. Design/methodology/approach The finite element analysis, structural optimization design and topology optimization of the connecting rod are applied. Efficient hybrid method is deployed: static and modal analysis; and structure re-design of the connecting rod based on topology optimization. Findings After the optimization of the connecting rod, the weight is reduced from 1.7907 to 1.4875 kg, with a reduction of 16.93%. The maximum equivalent stress of the optimized connecting rod is 183.97 MPa and that of the original structure is 217.18 MPa, with the reduction of 15.62%. The first, second and third natural frequencies of the optimized connecting rod are increased by 8.89%, 8.85% and 11.09%, respectively. Through the finite element analysis and based on the lightweight, the maximum equivalent stress is reduced and the low-order natural frequency is increased. Originality/value This paper presents an optimization method on the connecting rod structure. Based on the statics and modal analysis of the connecting rod and combined with the topology optimization, the size of the connecting rod is improved, and the static and dynamic characteristics of the optimized connecting rod are improved.

In order to building the optimization model of the automobile drive axle housing, the author studied the static and dynamic performance of it’s structure based on the model.

Vibration results from situation when the inherent frequency close to the external exciting force during the operation of the motor, so accurate and effective calculation of the natural frequency of the motor has an important significance to damping noise. By numerical simulation model and the ANSYS finite element modal, the inherent frequencies were got of the motor and comparison results verify the effectiveness of the motor model. The effect of the modulus of elasticity of the softening layer between the motor and the ground to the inherent frequency was researched intensively, and puts forward related suggestions.

A practical explicit 3D finite element analysis model has been developed and implemented to analyze turning hardened AISI 52100 steels using a PCBN cutting tool. The finite element analysis incorporated the thermo-elastic-plastic properties of the work material in machining. An improved friction model has been proposed to characterize tool-chip interaction with the friction coefficient and shear flow stresses determined by force calibration and material tests, respectively. A geometric model has been established to simulate a 3D turning. FEA Model predictions have reasonable accuracy for chip geometry, forces, residual stresses, and cutting temperatures. FEA model sensitivity analysis indicates that the prediction is consistent using a suitable magnitude of material failure strain for chip separation, the simulation gives reasonable results using the experimentally determined material properties, the proposed friction model is valid and the sticking region on the tool-chip interface is a dominant factor of model predictions.

A dynamic finite element analysis model for cylindrical roller bearing is developed, and the complex stress distribution and dynamic contacting nature of the bearing are investigated carefully based on ANSYS/LS-DYNA. Numerical simulation results show that the stress would be bigger when the element contacting with the inner or outer ring than at other times, and the biggest stress would appear near the area that roller contacting with the inner ring. Phenomenon of stress concentration on the roller is found to be very obvious during the operating process of the bearing system. The stress distributions of different elements are uneven on the same side surface of roller in its axis direction. Numerical simulation results can give useful references for the design and analysis of rolling bearing.

Abstract A finite element analysis (FEA) model of the interaction of a nut and bolt was used to investigate the effects of sliding, friction, and yielding in a bolted connection. The finite element model was developed as a two-dimensional, axisymmetric system, which allowed the study of axial and radial loading and displacements. This model did not permit evaluation of hoop or torsional effects such as tightening or the helical thread form. Results presented in this paper include the distribution of load between consecutive threads, the relative sliding along thread faces, and the stress distribution and regions of yielding in the model. Finally, a comparison to previous, linear analysis work and to published experimental data is made to conclude the paper.

The proposed finite element analysis (FEA) model was constructed using FEA simulation software, ANSYS program, for determining effects of corrosion fatigue (CF) from TIG welding process on AISI 304 stainless steel workpiece. The FEA model of TIG welding process was developed from Goldak's double ellipsoid moving heat source. In this paper, the residual stress results obtained from the FEA model were consistent with results from the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method. The residual stress was further used as an input in the next step of corrosion fatigue analysis. The predictive CF life result obtained from the FEA CF model were consistent with the value obtained from stress-life curve (S-N curve) from the reference literaturature. Therefore, the proposed FEA of CF model was then used for predicting the corrosion fatigue life on TIG welding workpiece, the results from the model showed the corrosion fatigue life of 1,794 cycles with testing condition of the frequency ( f ) = 0.1 Hz and the equivalent load of 67.5 kN (equal to 150 MPa) with R = 0.25.
