Due to resource scarcity and worsening pollution on the environment, more and more people are attracted by green design. Some designs not only focus on energy saving, but also attach great importance to conveying green concept. Based on the case study of Japanese design and focusing on three aspects, material selection, structural design and style orientation, this article attempts to analyze the design works that reflect prominently the green concept. Therefore, people can deeply sense and appreciate the concept of environmental protection and eventually are beneficial educated and directed.

In this article Lingnan Impression Park is taken as case study to research on integrated strategies of cultural heritage conservation with the purpose of its adapted reuse. In process exploitation, a combined strategy reusing architecture heritage is adopted, to produce an atmosphere of traditional Lingnan (Cantonese) culture for tourism development. This strategy has advantages for material recycle, construction energy saving and environmental protection, but arising an issue concerning heritage’s authenticity. It is regarded that it must be adopted a cultural ecology’s views to deal with the concept of authenticity especially in circumstance of heritage reuse with tourism exploitation.

Building energy consumption is huge, with the emergence of global energy crisis and environmental problems and the concept of low carbon environmental protection, in order to relieve the strained situation of world energy, energy-saving building began to get attention widely. By means of the reasonable design and material selection for architecture, energy-saving buildings reduce the operation energy consumption, through scientific methods and using environmental protection materials to raise science and technology content of construction, by internal control of building, such as temperature, lighting, noise within the range of suitable for human settlement, to provide a healthy, comfortable and ecological living space for residents.

The number of post-use or damaged furniture products before their time becomes a problem especially for ecological problems in the work environment. This research tries to explore the creativity of product design based on the principles derived from the concept of green design. One of the principles of green design derived is the upcycle concept. Through the upcycle concept approach, this research tries to construct ex office material into an explorative and ecological new design. This research uses a case study of ex office / campus furniture products that are no longer in use due to damage. The design model based on upcycle concept and formalistic design is used as a basis for design and to analyze design results. The results of this study in addition to creating explorative design products, also explain the principles of ecological regenerative design values, namely optimizing the use of waste materials, durability of product life that can be extended, as well as supporting environmental protection and increasing product values and aesthetics.

Current architecture studios are missing an important phase in the education process, which is constructing the students’ conceptual ideas on a real physical scale. The design-build approach enables the students to test their ideas, theories, material selection, construction methods, environmental constraints, simulation results, level of space functionality and other important aspects when used by real target clients in an existing context. This paper aims to highlight the importance of using the design-build method through discussing a design project case study carried out by the Masters of Architecture design programme students at Beirut Arab University, who have built prototype units for refugees on a 1:1 scale.

With the development of economy and the improvement of people's living level, improving living conditions and public buildings, architectural design requirements are also constantly improved. Modern architecture should consider not only beautiful and comfortable, but also take into account the design individuality, while taking into consideration the people-oriented design concept of environmental protection and energy saving. This also makes the environmental friendly and energy-saving building is the development direction of future architecture. This paper analyzes the modern architecture of the ecological and environmental protection, gives the method to realize the construction of energy-saving environmental protection design and the use of new materials, new equipment and new technology of the existing.

AbstractIn recent years, it has become popular for some of countries and regions to adapt the system of governance to varied and complex issues concerned with regional development and the environment. Watershed management is possibly the best example of this. It involves flood control, water use management and river environment simultaneously. Therefore, comprehensive watershed-based management should be aimed at balancing those aims. The objectives of this study are to introduce the notion of environmental governance into the planning process, to establish a method for assessing the alternatives and to develop a procedure for determining the most appropriate plan for environmental governance. The planning process here is based on strategic environment assessment (SEA). To verify the hypothetical approach, the middle river basin in the Tokachi River, Japan was selected as a case study. In practice, after workshop discussions, it was found to have the appropriate degree of consensus based on the balance of flood control and environmental protection in the watershed.

Abstract This is a conceptual work about the form-finding of a hybrid tensegrity structure. The structure was obtained from the combination of arch-supported membrane systems and diamond-type tensegrity systems. By combining these two types of structures, the resulting system features the “tensile-integrity” property of cables and membrane together with what we call “floating-bending” of the arches, a term which is intended to recall the words “floating-compression” introduced by Kenneth Snelson, the father of tensegrities. Two approaches in the form-finding calculations were followed, the Matlab implementation of a simple model comprising standard constant-stress membrane/cable elements together with the so-called stick-and-spring elements for the arches, and the analysis with the commercial software WinTess, used in conjunction with Rhino and Grasshopper. The case study of a T3 floating-bending tensile-integrity structure was explored, a structure that features a much larger enclosed volume in comparison to conventional tensegrity prisms. The structural design of an outdoor pavilion of 6 m in height was carried out considering ultimate and service limit states. This study shows that floating-bending structures are feasible, opening the way to the introduction of suitable analysis and optimization procedures for this type of structures.
