With the Asynchronous wind generators as research object, this paper analyzes the problems of the voltage stability and the generation mechanism of the reactive power compensation during the wind farms connected operation. For paralleling capacitor bank has shown obvious defects, therefore this paper employs dynamic reactive power compensation to improve reactive characteristics of grid-connected wind farms. With the influences of different wind disturbances and grid faults on wind farms, wind farm model is set up and dynamic reactive power compensation system and wind speeds are built in the Matlab/Simulink software, The simulation result shows that they can provide reactive power compensation to ensure the voltage stability of the wind farms. But STATCOM needs less reactive compensation capacity to make sure the voltage and active power approaching steady state before the faults more quickly, Therefore STATCOM is more suitable for wind farms connected dynamic reactive power compensation.

This paper presents wind energy conversion model, drive shaft’s dual-mass model and generator’s transient mathematical model for the transient analysis of fixed speed asynchronous wind generators, and analyzes the transient characteristics of the wind generators under the condition of low voltage fault. The control principles of two dynamic reactive power compensation equipments as static var compensator (SVC) and static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) are introduced. Take a wind farm consists of fixed speed asynchronous wind generators as an example, the two compensation equipments are simulated in PowerFactory/DIgSILENT to compare the effort of them on enhancing the low voltage ride-through capability of the wind farm.

The main purpose of this paper is to study the enhancement of the Low-Voltage-Ride-Through (LVRT) capability of the wind farm with the installment of the Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) and the Static Var Compensator (SVC). With more penetration of wind energy from on-shore and off-shore wind farms, utilities have been starting to set up the regulation requiring the wind turbine generators to remain connected to the grid when a fault takes place in the system which is referred to as Low-Voltage-Ride-Through (LVRT). A wind farm composed with doubly fed induction generators is used as the study system. Both the STATCOM and the SVC are utilized as the devices for enhancing the LVRT capability of the wind farm. The results are demonstrated for comparing the performance of the two devices in the improvement of voltage dynamic characteristics of the study system.

Squirrel-cage induction generator (SCIG) has been widely utilized in large wind farms in China. However, the large wind farm composed of induction generators will cause obvious power system stability problems due to the dependency on reactive power. Doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) has excellent dynamic characteristics of wind farm operations. With the increasing of wind power penetration in power systems, more and more wind farms use both SCIG and DFIG. This paper firstly analyzes the the dynamic characteristic of wind farm on power systems, especially in terms of the voltage stability. Then the interaction between the SCIGs and DFIGs is also investigated. A detailed simulation model of wind farms is presented by means of MATLAB. The simulation results demonstrate that the DFIG applications will improve the voltage stability of the wind farm largely and the low voltage ride through characteristics of SCIG to some extend.

With the application of FACTS devices in large-scale new energy base, in the light of FACTS devices installed in each wind farm in Gansu Jiuquan, which can supply reactive compensation for the power transmission system and stable the grid voltage, in this paper the magnetic controllable reactor (MCR) type static var compensator (SVC) is studied deeply. The paper introduces the working principle and characteristics of the MCR-SVC. In connection with MCR equivalent circuit, the simulation model is built in MATLAB/SPS, the simulation results and field tests verify the reactive power compensation effect of MCR-SVC during wind farms.

The purpose of this research is to find the loading limit of a power system before hitting voltage instability and to assess the margin to voltage instability of a system consisting of a wind farm. An index called Bus Apparent Power Difference Criterion (BSDC) is used to find maximum loadable point. The measure depends on the way that in the region of the voltage collapse no extra apparent power can be delivered to the affected bus. The analysis is performed combination of wind power injection at different wind speeds and line outages in the network. In the feasibility and siting studies of wind farms the steady state analysis with network contingencies give the utility or the developer a sense of network condition upon the injection of power in the network. However, the extent of voltage stability impacted due to load growth in the system is not assessed. The research paper makes way to assess the impact on voltage stability margin with obtaining the maximum loadable point of the system and assessing the best suited bus to integrate a wind farm into the system.

According to the operation features that voltage of wind farm fluctuate greatly, we analyzed the operation features of reactive power compensation equipment and put forward the coordination control method of compensation equipment. The method solved the problem for a single for reactive compensation equipment caused by the slow speed and poor economy. Based on the target of safe and economical operation, we raised that using composite indicator calculate the capacity of all kinds of required compensation equipment, and then we had coordinated control to compensation equipments. This paper gave an example of Guazhou Gansu and tested and verified the feasibility and effectivity of the method.

As a new dynamic reactive compensation devices, static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) has better reactive power compensation effect such as small in size, capacity, continuous adjusting, fast response and economic performance compared with SVC. It is suitable to be used in large-scale wind farm to improve the voltage stability of wind power system. With the help of ideas and methods in conventional electric power system to calculate the two-dimensional parameter bifurcation boundary, the node voltage two-dimensional saddle-node bifurcation boundary of wind power system was calculated by using wind farm active power inject(Pin ),STATCOM parameters KMdc and Vrefdc as bifurcation control parameters. And on the basis of this analysis, the laws of wind power system voltage stability affected by active power and STATCOM parameters were obtained.

Fixed speed wind energy conversion systems based on squirrel cage induction generator (SCIG) has a significant existence in wind energy technology. Availability of reactive power is obligatory for the reliable and stable performance of the power system. Insufficient reactive power has navigated to voltage collapses and has been a foremost source of various recent major power outages universally. This paper exhibits the simulation results of a grid integrated wind farm with and without reactive power compensation by capacitor banks and static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) to achieve voltage stability improvement during startup, normal operation, symmetrical and unsymmetrical fault conditions. The effect of reactive power compensation on voltage profile is compared.

Squirrel-cage induction generator (SCIG), as its structural and economic advantages, has been widely utilized in large wind farms in China. However, the large wind farm composed of induction generators will cause obvious problems to the power system stability due to the dependency on reactive power. At the same time, Doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG), as a new type of wind turbine generator, has excellent dynamic characteristics for operation of wind farms. With the increase in penetration of wind power in power systems, more and more wind farms will use both SCIG and DFIG. In this case, the dynamic characteristic of wind farm on power systems is becoming an important issue especially in terms of the voltage stability. This article is to show by means of simulations the dynamic performance of wind farm linked to power system under the circumstances of network disturbances. Furthermore, the interaction between the SCIGs and DFIGs has also been investigated. A detailed model of wind farms is presented through the plat root of MATLAB/SIMULINK. The simulation results demonstrate that the DFIG applications will largely improve the dynamic performance of wind farm in certain conditions, if the DFIGs could be applied reasonably, the voltage stability of the wind farm will be largely improved and even low voltage ride through(LVRT) characteristic of SCIGs, which may be a good solution to reduce the high dependence of costly reactive power compensation equipment(Some flexible AC transmission systems devices like SVC, STATCOM) to some extent.
