By using the numerical simulation techniques, the response characteristics of single split-ring resonator (SRR) in a broadband terahertz region are analyzed. We examine the transmission and dispersion characteristics of the SRR and show that there are different resonances while changing the orientations of electric field vector relative to the gap-bearing sides. Two significant resonances corresponding to electric response and magnetic response will be observed while the electric field vector perpendicular to the gap-bearing side, and only one electric resonance occurs when the electric field vector parallel to the same side. This will be a reference to design the possible terahertz metamaterials.

Using numerical simulation techniques, the response characteristics of metamaterials split-ring resonators (SRRs) in terahertz region are analyzed. We examine the transmission and dispersion characteristics of several SRRs and show that there are two significant resonances corresponding to electric response and magnetic response, respectively. Based on the topology optimization technique, a terahertz magnetic response of metamaterial for the goal of maximum bandwidth is performed, the results seem to imply that the SRRs structure is the most reasonable topological form for broad magnetic resonance in THz band.

Second-harmonic generation in split ring resonator multilayer nanostructure is studied with the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The fundamental frequency wave and the second-harmonic generation at the resonant absorption wavelength are highly localized in the dielectric layer, and the absorption peak is sensitive to dielectric constant of the dielectric layer. Under the excitation of the plasmon resonances mode, the strong local field induces an expected increase of the second-harmonic generation with conversion efficiencies 10−6-10−7. The distributions of fundamental frequency electric field and second-harmonic electric field inside the central dielectric layer region are also shown.

Stopband split ring resonator (SSRR) is presented in this paper for measuring complex permittivity of liquid with different position of microfluidic channel operates at resonant frequency of 1 GHz. The sensor was fabricated and microfluidic channel is located in the gap groove with two different positions of the carrier where the electric field is as large as possible.  The sensor has been tested with several solvents to verify its sensitivity where the electric field interacts with the liquid filled in a quartz tube and hence alter the SRR behavior. The electromagnetic properties (complex permittivity) of the solvent can be extracted from shift in the resonant frequency of the resonator due to perturbation phenomenon.
