In order to obtain a novel liquid crystal compound with trifluoromethyl substitutent, Sonogashira coupling reaction was used to synthesize the mesogenic compound based on tolane. Firstly, 1-iodo-4-trifluoromethyl-benzene was modified with acetylene groups, and then coupled with iodo amyl biphenyl through Sonogashira reaction to obtain the target compound. Moreover, the liquid crystal phase behaviors including transition temperatures and phase sequences were investigated by DSC and POM.

In order to obtain an important azobenzene liquid crystal intermediate with phenylacetylene group, Sonogashira coupling reaction was used to preparation the compound. In this paper, the intermediate was synthesized by (4-Iodo-phenyl)-(4-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-diazene and trimethyl silyl acetylene (TMSA) as raw materials, and then the trimethyl silyl group was removaled under the action of K2CO3. During the synthesis, the optimum reaction conditions were obtained, that the mol ratio of (4-Iodo-phenyl)-(4-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-diazene and trimethyl silyl acetylene was 1:2, the reaction temperature was 80 oC. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) was used to measure the molecular structure of the target compound.

The liquid crystal material with trifluoromethyl substitutent is a very important liquid crystal monomer to combine mixture in the application of display area. In this paper, a kind of liquid crystal material with trifluoromethyl substitutent was synthesized by traditional method of Sonogashira coupling reaction, the reaction mechanism and reaction conditions were then obtained. In addition, the synthesized compound was characterized by FT-IR and1H-NMR to confirm the consistent structure with target compound.

A novel triphenylene-based discotic liquid crystal compound was synthesized in this study. The chemical structures of compounds were characterized by 1HNMR spectra, FT-IR spectra and were confirmed. The phase transition behavior was studied in the combination of texture observation by DSC and POM equipped with a temperature-controllable hot-stage. The object compound showed liquid crystal phase and the results showed that columnar liquid crystal phase between 90.1°C and 138.1 °C during heating.

Relative rate constants (krel) for the Sonogashira coupling were determined in competitive reactions between iodobenzene and a series of para- and meta-substituted iodobenzenes and compared to the charge on iodine and the z-component of the quadrupole moment of the iodine-bearing carbon. We use an Hammett correlation analysis and the computational data to provide further evidence that the rate limiting step of the Sonogashira reaction is the initial oxidative addition of Pd to the carbon-iodine bond.Key words: Sonogashira, competitive reactions, Hammett correlation.
