Water temperature plays a crucial role in water ecological environment both in the reservoir and downstream area. Three Gorges Project (TGP) is the largest hydraulic engineering in the world, and changes of water quality attract much more attention, especially in the thermal structure since initial impoundment in 2003. In order to clearly understand water temperature distribution after the initial impoundment in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), we monitored the temperature distribution of the Taipingxi section which was not far from the dam from early April to the end of July in 2004. According to the analyzing of the monitoring data of transverse and vertical temperature variation, we could find that when water level went up to 135m above sea level (a.s.l.) or 139m in the initial impoundment phase, the temperature mixed uniformly in transverse direction. Excepting April, there was basically had no temperature difference in vertical direction, even in April, the maximum temperature difference was only 1.39°C within 100 meters (April 22), the average temperature gradient was only 0.014°C/m; Both the temperature of water and atmosphere have similar variation tendency, but the response of the water temperature to atmosphere is delayed, especially the bottom water temperature. The result indicate that the reservoir displayed a mixed thermal structure during initial impoundment phase, therefore, the release had no change before and after impoundment, also had little influence on the aquatic organism and crops at downstream , the work provide a scientific basis for the development of pollution control and ecological protection measure.

Abstract This study selected five points in the middle and upper mainstream of the Three Gorges Reservoir area. Starting from May 2016, the greenhouse gases CO2 and CH4 from the water–air formation at the sampling points have been monitored month by month for 10 months. Using the headspace balance method and the thin boundary layer model estimation method, we obtained the CO2 and CH4 partial pressure ranges and the water–air formation diffusion flux at the mainstream point. It is found that the CH4 partial pressure of water body is significantly positively correlated with water temperature, and significantly negatively correlated with DO; the CH2 partial pressure of water body is positively correlated with water temperature, but negatively correlated with conductivity, DO, pH and wind speed. The diffusion fluxes of CH4 and CO2 at the water–air formation are positively correlated with CH4 partial pressure and water temperature, and negatively correlated with ph, DO and conductivity. It is also found that the reservoir has a certain mitigation effect on the release of CO2 from the river water body, and the CH4 diffusion flux at the water–air formation is roughly equivalent.

Water temperature, a crucial environmental factor, has a direct impact on almost all ecological and biogeochemical processes. The hydrological and thermal regimes in the Yangtze River have changed greatly due to the constructions of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). To quantify the impact of TGR on the water temperature regime, we present a regression-modeling framework to reconstruct the temporal pattern of flow and temperature variation along the middle reach of the river in the absence of the TGR. By comparing reconstructed water temperatures to observed water temperature for the post-impounded period, the influence of impoundment on water temperature was estimated. Results show that TGR has had a greater impact on water temperature than natural changes in air temperature and discharge. The reservoir acts as a source of cold water in spring, summer and autumn and a warm source in winter. The results of this study illustrate the pronounced effect of the TGR on the temperature regime of the Yangtze River. We hope this study could provide a scientific reference for ecological operation of TGR facing biological conservation.

Note: This study has been published in Journal of Hydrology (Tao, Y., Wang, Y., Rhoads, B., Wang, D., Ni, L. and Wu, J., 2020.
