The Application of Multimedia Computer Assisted Language Learning in English Teaching

Multimedia computer assisted English learning has been widely used with the development of information technology. This new technology has many advantages in improving the students’ learning efficiency and teachers’ quality. In this article, the applications of multimedia computer assisted language learning in English teaching such as phonetic teaching, conversation presentation, text presentation, background introduction and practice strengthening are analyzed. The possible problems in English teaching and countermeasures are also introduced.

In this chapter the attitude of mothers to the use of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) in their children's language learning was investigated. 118 Iranian mothers were selected based on convenient sampling. Their attitude towards CALL was assessed by a 12-item questionnaire. The result of data analysis revealed that generally mothers have roughly positive attitudes towards CALL. Significant differences were reported when mothers with higher education were compared with those mothers who did not have university degrees. However, gender, age, and mother's profession did not have any role in their attitudes towards CALL.

The combination of production-oriented approach (POA) and modern computer technology makes English learning and teaching more convenient and efficient. This initial proposal aims at suggesting one way in which Information Technology in the form of CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning) could be integrated into the foreign language curriculum of the licenciatura programs in Colombia. This task can be carried out as the project within the different universities in order to support and improve the learning and teaching of English which is one of its main objectives.

AbstractThe paper examines the application of computer assisted language learning (CALL) in English language classes in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The research was designed as an empirical examination of the attitudes of teachers and students on the successful application of computer assisted language learning in English language classrooms in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Lack of motivation is one the problems that most teachers are faced with. There are many causes of poor motivation, but one of them is certainly the unattractiveness and dullness of traditional methods, teaching materials and resources. However, many authors with educational experience point out that the use of information technology can positively influence students’ motivation and encourage them to work actively. While adults, as digital immigrants, might not use modern information technology excessively, children and teens are true digital natives, who have grown up with the latest technologies and use them with great pleasure in all aspects of their lives adapting them to their needs (Prensky, 2001). The results obtained in this research are an indicator of the current attitude of teachers and students towards these issues, but they also highlight some important necessary reforms in the field of teacher education.

This study aims at improving students’ comprehension on English vocabulary using computer and finding out the effectiveness, efficiency and the attractiveness of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) in English learning. It was carried out at SMP Sunan Giri Gresik by using proactive action research method and intervention action model. The participants belonged to 3 different class groups. Thirty of them were from 7th grade (Amanah class) and thirty-two of them from (Hidayah class). The other 30 participants from (Inayah class). The data were collected and analyzed by using mixed method approach. Instruments used for collecting data in this study are questionnaires, documents, observation check list, interview, and achievement tests. The results showed that the treatments give affect positively for students especially treatment on cycle 2. It also can be seen by the students’ involvement actively during learning process. Computer assisted learning especially using software gave students chance to explore their English skill especially the vocabulary through interacting directly with computer by doing exercises given individually in pair or group. From the explanation above it can be concluded that English learning in junior high school can be improved with the help of computer assistance in this matter called Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) mainly to improve English vocabulary. This chapter proposes to establish a starting point in the design of technology specialized in the development of listening comprehension skills from a theoretical perspective, when learning English as a second language. Therefore, an exploration about how technologies have evolved in the practice of learning English as a second language was required. Likewise, authors look at fundamental aspects of technology literacy and how this is rooted in users' contexts. From this, they conceptualize the symbolic competence through the ecological theory in order to design a computer-assisted language learning practice. Findings led to the conclusion that a guide on how to build specialized technology in English learning as a second language does not exist. What indeed exists is the application of recycled technology created for other purposes but used for English learning. Authors propose a practice where the meaning is explored through the understanding of what happens in the context by using 3D holograms as an optical illusion.

While listening comprehension is the heart of language, but it is the least understood and researched skill. This is the reason why particular attention must be given to listening comprehension as a skill required in foreign language acquisition and especially in part played by listening skills. This study aims to see the effect of computer assisted language learning (CALL) applied to students` listening performance. This study adopts a qualitative approach. Data were collected using questionnaires. The findings in this study reveals Students`-perceptions and feedback on CALL. It shows that many of the students feel easier in understanding the listening material using CALL. It also shows that many of the teachers interested using CALL but not interested with the LMS provided. It can be concluded that most of the students have a positive impression about the use of CALL in English learning, especially for Listening.
