The controlled development of texture microstructure in ceramics is one effective way to improve their properties, such as electrical, mechanical properties and biocompatibility. A bioceramics with oriented crystal structure has attracted great interest. In bone reparations, Hydroxyapatite (HAp)-based biomaterials were frequently used. And HAp is the main mineral constituent of the hard tissue of human bodies, which occurs with a hexagonal crystal. A HAp crystal turns out to have different surface properties in a- (or b-) plane and c-plane. In this regard, to get highly oriented HAp is very important before using HAp as a biomaterial. And the crystal orientated HAp is useful not only as biomaterials but also as protein absorbents. In this research, two different kinds of HAp-based biomaterial with oriented structure (HAp bioceramics and HAp-coated titanium composite) were studied.

The evolutions of mechanical properties and microstructure of cryoECAPed 1050 alloy annealed at various temperatures from 150°C to 400°C for 1h with and without high magnetic field (HMF) were investigated by hardness test and electron back scattering diffraction pattern (EBSD) analysis. The abnormal grain growth happens in sample annealing at 400°C without a field. With the application of high magnetic field, the formation of the HABs is suppressed, the grain size distribution is homogeneous and no abnormal grain growth occurs.

Heusler type alloys Ni50Mn25+xGa25-x  (x=2,3,4 and 5) based on near stoichiometric Ni2MnGa compositions were directionally solidified using modified Bridgman method. The alloys thus prepared were characterized for their chemical composition, crystal structure, microstructure, phase transformation, magnetic  and magneto-mechanical properties. The directionally solidified Ni50Mn30Ga20 alloy rod exhibited maximum magnetocrystalline value of 95 kJm-3 and lowest detwinning stresses for martensite phase of about 5MPa. The reversible room temperature magnetic field induced strain of 0.2% under external magnetic field of 0.6T and 0.05kN bias load was obtained for the directionally solidified Ni50Mn30Ga20 alloy.
