Lead-free, bismuth sodium titanate-potassium sodium niobate piezoelectric ceramics (Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3-(K1/2Na1/2)NbO3 have been prepared by a conventional mixed-oxide method via vibro-milling technique. The (K1/2Na1/2)NbO3 (KNN)-based compositions with a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) have shown greater advantages over another typical lead-free piezoelectric candidate material system, (Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3 (BNT)-based MPB materials. More importantly, when used this type of material is often subjected to self-induced or external stress. It is, therefore, of interest to investigate influence of stress on properties of the ceramics. In this study, the influences of compressive stress on the dielectric properties of BNT-KNN ceramics were investigated. The dielectric properties were determined under compressive stress applied parallel to electric field. The results indicate significant changes of both properties with the imposed compressive stress. The results were explained in terms of non-180˚ domain switching and de-aging of the dielectric properties under the influence of the applied stress.

Lead-free potassium sodium niobate (K0.5Na0.5)NbO3 (KNN) has been prepared via conventional ceramic processing method. The influence of 0.5 wt% - 1.5 wt% MnO2 and WO3 addition on the sintering, crystallographic structure, microstructure and dielectric properties of KNN has been investigated. Optimal sintering temperatures of KNN ceramics were observed to be in the narrow interval: 1090 °C - 1110 °C for MnO2 doped KNN; 1150 °C - 1170 °C for pure KNN and doped with WO3. XRD patterns showed that all the samples have single perovskite structure with monoclinic structure. Microstructure of ceramics was changed greatly by using dopants.http://dx.doi.org/10.5755/j01.ms.17.1.251

Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics based on bismuth sodium titanate (BNT) -barium hafnate titanate (BHT) were prepared by a two-step synthesis process. The final BNT-BHT ceramics sintered at 1180oC for 2 h in air showed a perovskite structure with high density. The morphotropic phase boundaries (MPB) were found in BNT based piezoelectric ceramics with 8~10 wt% BHT in composites. In the case of Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3-0.08BaHf0.05Ti0.95O3 ceramics, a maximum piezoelectric coefficient d33 of 122.6 pC/N was obtained. The remnant polarization (Pr) and coercive field (Ec) were measured and the relationship between ferroelectricity and the BHT fraction in the compounds was investigated. The BNT-BHT ceramics were expected to be a new and promising candidate for lead-free piezoelectric device applications.
