The yield and plastic deformation behaviour of wrought Mg-alloy AZ31 sheets were investigated at elevated temperatures from ambient to 300°C. It is found that the 0.2% proof stress and ultimate strength decrease linearly with increasing temperature, and the Young’s modulus goes down in the same way. Whereas the ductility, expressed by elongation, increases with temperature, in contrast to the decrease in uniform elongation. The plastic deformation anisotropy, represented by the ratio of transverse and thickness strain of the plate sample, decreases as the temperature increases, and at about 225°C, coincidentally, reaches to unity. The activation volumes for yield stress and ultimate strength are discussed with a thermal activation law-Arrhenius Equation.

AbstractIn this study, fly ash cenospheres were added to semisolid AZ91D Mg alloy to prepare fly ash cenosphere/AZ91D (FAC/AZ91D) composites by means of compo-casting. The high-temperature damping capacity of FAC/AZ91D composites was investigated as compared with AZ91D Mg alloy. The results show that the damping capacities of FAC/AZ91D composites and AZ91D Mg alloy strongly depend on the measuring temperature. The FAC/AZ91D composites show better damping capacity than AZ91D Mg alloy. The 10 wt.% FAC/AZ91D composites exhibit the best damping capacity from room temperature to 125°C, whereas the 2 wt.% FAC/AZ91D composites show the highest damping capacity at 125°C–320°C. The damping mechanism was analyzed by microstructure observation at elevated temperatures. The damping-temperature curves exhibit a damping peak at approximately 150°C, and the activation energy of the damping peak was calculated according to the Arrhenius equation. Furthermore, the peak temperature increases with increasing frequencies. The damping peak is related to the thermal activation relaxation process, and its mechanism is the dislocation-induced damping.

The study addressed the microstructure and mechanical properties of hot-rolled advanced high-strength medium manganese steel. Some of the curves that were obtained in static tensile tests at deformation temperatures of 20–200 °C showed the occurrence of the heterogeneous plastic deformation phenomenon, called the Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effect. The deformation temperature significantly influenced a serration character. The correlations between the deformation temperature, serration range, microstructural features, and fracture behavior were investigated. The curves showed no Lüders elongation as a result of the thermomechanical processing applied. The serrated flow phenomenon was observed at 60 and 140 °C. The serration type was different and the most enhanced at 140 °C, where the PLC effect was present in both uniform and post-uniform elongation ranges. The disappearance of serrations at 200 °C was related to the increased diffusion intensity.

It is studied the deformation process by IN SITU surface morphology observation for Mg alloy AZ31 sheet in an SEM. It is found that the deformation starts phenomenologically from twinning process, making out of the first twinning in both intact crystallite grains and existing twinned bands by rolling process, and the secondary twinning in original twinned bands. As the plastic strain increases the twinned bands turn to transverse direction (TD) of the sheet in all three tensile directions: rolling direction (RD), TD and 45° to rolling direction (45). The turning characteristic of grain boundaries were dealt with as well.
