An overview of the chemical strategies developed in our laboratories to obtain welldefined BiVO4 particles is presented. The methods rely on the thermal treatment (including hydrothermal conditions) of aqueous solutions containing bismuth(III) cations, vanadium(V) species and organic ligands. The use of distinct polyaminocarboxylates and cyclodextrins as possible morphological modifiers was investigated. NMR spectroscopic techniques were applied to the distinct chemical baths in order to have a better insight on the nature of the solute precursors.

There are several protocols for the preparation of bicyclic derivatives; however, some methods use dangerous and require special conditions. The aim of this study was to synthesize a new Dioxaspiro[ bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-oxabicyclo[6.2.0]-deca-1(10), 8-dien-4-one (compound 8). Compound 8 was prepared using some reactions such as; i) etherification, ii) reduction, iii) amidation, iv) imination and v) 2+2 addition. The chemical structure of 8 and its intermediaries were completely characterized by spectroscopic techniques and elemental analysis. The synthesis showed a yield of 85% for compound 8. In this study, an easy method for the preparation of compound 8 is reported.

The aggregation behavior of meso-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin, [ H 2( TPPS 4)]4-, in the presence of hydrated polyethyleneimine ( PEI ) in aqueous solutions (1.6 < pH < 7.6) has been investigated. The interaction leads to the formation of a variety of pH dependent species, which have been attributed to porphyrin dimers or small oligomers under neutral conditions and J-aggregates on lowering the pH. The aggregation process follows kinetics typical of self-similar systems whose rates increase steeply on increasing the matrix concentration. This finding could be explained on the basis of an increased availability of binding sites for the growing aggregates. The charged polymer has been used to electrostatically adsorb the porphyrin onto glass substrates affording multilayered films. Our results point to the presence of fully protonated species in the solid state, which rearrange into J-aggregates as a function of pH and water content. The systems in solution and on glass surfaces have been investigated through a combination of UV-vis spectroscopy, fluorescence emission and resonance light scattering techniques.

The effects of the presence of ten organic ligands and common pH buffering agents – acetate, oxalate, tartrate, citrate, phthalate, EDTA, carbonate, TRIS, phosphate and borate – on aqueous Si concentration measurements made using the common molybdate blue method were quantified. The concentrations of these additives ranged from 0.01 to 0.1 mol/kg in the measured aqueous solutions. Whereas measured Si concentrations were not affected by the presence of up to 0.1 mol/kg acetate, hydrogen phthalate or TRIS, the presence of 0.1 mol/kg of all other selected additives altered substantially the measured Si concentrations using the molybdate blue method. For example the presence of 0.1 mol/kg of citrate, EDTA, and hydrogen phosphate decreased the ratio of measured to true Si concentrations to ~0.05. These variations are interpreted to stem from the formation of competing aqueous complexes in the aqueous phase limiting the formation of the characteristically blue SiMo12O404– complex.

Thin films of CuSbS2 have been deposited on ultrasonically cleaned glass substrates using a simple chemical bath deposition technique. Prepared films have been characterized using X-ray diffraction, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy and UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopic techniques, respectively. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the prepared films possess polycrystalline in nature with orthorhombic CuSbS2 in addition to secondary phase of monoclinic Cu3SbS3 and cubic Cu12Sb4S13 for different copper concentrations. Field Emission Scanning Electron Spectroscopic analysis showed that the prepared films possess spherical shaped grains with irregular shaped clusters. Optical absorption analysis showed that the prepared films possess band gap value in the range between 1.7 and 2.4 eV.
