Hydrogen- and corrosion -related defects of pure iron and AISI 304 and 316 stainless steels were investigated by measuring Doppler broadening energy spectra of positron annihilation. The significant increase in S-parameter after corrosion in iron was interpreted as due to the formation of defects and voids during corrosion processes. However, a decrease of the S-parameter in AISI 304 and 316 stainless steels after corrosion was interpreted as dissolution of passivity oxide film. Furthermore, similar results in iron and stainless steels after hydrogen-charging were observed. Hydrogen damage between the surface and the bulk has a significant variation with depth. The larger increase in S-parameter near the surface after hydrogen-charging mainly comes from the formation of large-size defects (e.g. voids); however the increase in S-parameter in the bulk after hydrogen-charging mainly comes from the production of small-size defects.

ABSTRACTA slow positron beam was used to investigate the solid state reaction of Co/Si and Co/Ti/Si. Variable-energy (0-20 keV) positrons were implanted into samples at different depths. The Doppler broadening of the annihilation -y-ray energy spectra, measured at a number of different incident positron energies were characterized a line-shape parameter “5”. It was found that the measured S parameters were sensitive to thin film reaction and crystalline characteristics. In particular, the S parameter of epitaxial CoSi2 formed by the ternary reaction was quit different from that of the polycrystalline CoSi2 formed by direct reaction of Co with Si.

Ni -rich intermetallic compound Ni 3 Al films were deposited using the dual-target magnetron co-sputtering method. The grain-boundary and grain-size characteristics of the as-deposited and post-annealed Ni 3 Al films were investigated using a slow positron beam. The results demonstrate a distinct change of S-parameter and positron effective diffusion length L eff values as samples were annealed at different ambient atmospheres and temperatures. It shows that the positron trapping center is mainly associated with intergranular vacancies, and changes to either the vacancy cluster size or the grain size have been invoked to explain the changes of the values of the S-parameter and L eff . Ni -rich oxygen- Ni 3 Al films were also studied. All films were identified using X-ray diffraction and the results confirm the conclusion obtained by the slow positron beam.

AbstractIcosahedral quasicrystals Al71.5Pd20.3Mn8.2, Al70.7Pd21.34Re7.96, Al62.5Cu25.5Fe12.5, and α-Al68.31Mn21.21Si10.48 1/1- approximant were investigated by using a monoenergetic slow positron beam. The structural vacancy densities in the first three samples were determined to be 5.0×1020, 7.7×1020, and 4.7×1020 cm−3, respectively, by analyzing the measured S-parameter.
